Throw your tat in the sea! Cost of that penalty miss

I couldn’t watch.  Instead, I caught up on Ozark.  Later, convinced things were not working out as expected, I called it a night and was brushing my teeth when the first text arrived, “Beautiful”.  Did it mean what I hoped it did?

All the downstairs lights were out but within seconds there was a loud and determined hammering on the front door.  I knew what news that house-shaking noise heralded, someone was here to share a moment.  And what a moment.  What was at stake last night was nothing short of bragging rights for the rest of your life.  The. Rest. Of. Your. Life!

An avalanche of red, white and blue tat was a mouse click away from being launched last night.  An ocean of novelty items, neckties, mugs, watches and so many clothing lines, forever claiming the year 2022, were about to flood online shopping baskets and would forever catch your eye on the streets of Glasgow and towns thousands of miles away.

Throw them all in the sea!  Nobody wants them.

An entire industry was stopped in its tracks when Eintracht Frankfurt completed that most German of achievements and won the penalty shootout in Seville.  Had Newco won, their players would be celebrated for the remainder of their lives – and at their passing.  You would never escape references to this game, it would follow you without end.

In reaching the final, Newco’s achievement, just 10 years after the liquidation of Oldco, was impressive.  Well done to a manager and squad that surely reached a peak even their dads would never have through possible.  To lose 5-4 on penalties, is especially cruel.  Fans who endured so much and have yet to see their team lift a trophy in person (do we count the Petrofac Cup win over Peterhead?), were denied a lifelong affirmative memory.  They know that was their chance, it will never come again.

The cost of Aaron Ramsey’s penalty miss excluding commercial and broadcast revenues?  €4m additional prize money for the winners and a minimum of €5.2m for participating in the Uefa Super Cup game.  Automatic Champions League qualification would bring in revenue, some of which will displace income from group stage games in either the Europa or Conference Leagues, one of which Newco will qualify for.  This will be in the region of €15m to €20m.

If Newco successfully earn one of the two Champions League non-champion group stage places, the damage is limited to €9.2m, if they fail to reach the CL group stage, the cost will be in the €25m – €30m region.  Aaron should have practised more.

Ramsay’s penalty also saved Celtic from having to share (for the time being) Scotland’s CL TV pool money – so a budget spreadsheet at Celtic Park received an extra £3m last night.  Which is nice.

The £100m losses gambled on getting a Champions League breakthrough almost paid off last night.  But it didn’t, which is how gambling works!

    European football is massive. The comments prove that.

     

     

    I am sooo glad that Ange realises the importance of European football to a massive club like Celtic.

     

     

    Personally I hate comments like ” Rest players for a Euro tie and save them for the league ”

     

     

    Garbage and more Garbage.

     

     

    A club like Celtic needs the money, the prestige the exposure and the diverse competition that domestic football cannot deliver.

     

     

    If we have learned anything it is :- European football matters

    When a player such as FF rejects us then fine we move on.

     

    However, we are Celtic. To reject us has consequences.

     

     

    Subsequently, FF no matter his physical size will never fit into a non shrink Celtic jersey.

    Morning all …still buzzing what a season……..I’ve just seen the pictures of the rangers support at the beam back ….same stadium we played in…..lucky if there’s 15,000 there !!!…..so roughly 42k at both venues …….when will the news agencies start telling the truth ?!!!!

    He’s not replacing his donkeys, he’ll likely have to replace Macgregor, Goldson, Aribo, Kent and fatty – 5 players who start every week.

     

     

    They’re presently second best in Scotland, they’ll need to get better to keep up with an improving Celtic never mind overtake us, while replacing their best players. We’ve been doing it for years, turning over our best player while staying at the top, they haven’t, ever.

    Why do you mention The Eredivisie as somewhere for the Huns to find value? It’s not Japan – it’s extensively scouted by all the top leagues and the better teams in the English premiership have stopped buying from there because the players who excel there haven’t done as well as they had hoped

    You have such an authoritive tone in your comments that one is rather seduced into believing what you are writing rather than examining the actual content.

     

     

    Yet the content is everything.

     

     

    The idea we had got replacing our best players down to a T to remain at the top is just hogwash (you’ve obviously erased the trauma of our summer transfer windows) , we constantly struggled after selling our best players and buying projects.

     

     

    It is often said that this was a generation of domination for us, I’ve oft asked the question, who did we dominate?

     

     

    You make it sound like their overdue squad refresh is going to be a burden to GVB – I get the impression he was not overly blown away by the quality he inherited and like all managers will be looking forward to bringing in players of his choosing to put his stamp on this squad.

     

     

    Yet remember that team from Wednesday was decimated by injury.

    Which is exactly what I said, also they will not be looking at the level of player the better English premiership sides want – if they can clear out the dead wood and replace them with quality they can improve instantly.

     

     

    From the players you mention it’s a mixed bunch; McGregor is way passed his best and should have already been replaced, “fatty”, I’ve not seen any major performance decline since The Rangers took him out of the shop window.

     

     

    I think the acid test for opposition sides players is, do you look at the player’s name on the team sheet and shudder?

     

     

    Those names don’t have me shuddering, if you can deal with Aribos physicality and Kent’s running and diving, then there’s not much there to concern us.

     

     

    They may not have a great deal of money to spend considering last window the warchest was bare – yet with the money from their Management team, Patterson and a good European run, they have never had it so good.

     

     

    If their DoF, Scouts and GVB can’t do better than where they are we are home and dry.

     

     

    No matter, I certainly expect us to be better, way better, at the start of next season than we were at the start of this one – the days of flaffing about all summer have gone, we learned the error of our ways the hard way when we gave away the ten, our complecncy and blame culture has been hardened and tempered into an uncompromising, positive, we never stop mindset.

     

     

    We should all enjoy watching the Celtic next season, The Rangers can take care of themselves.

    Wanting the opposition to lose is one thing, bragging rights, banter excellent and none do it better than the Celtic.

     

     

    Watching the opposition lose being a life affirming event as it stokes your hate to a new level, palpable disappointment that a beautiful City and it’s Chapel’s and Statues weren’t destroyed by wanton rabble is not a great look either.

     

     

    I love the Celtic but detest the hate…

    Yes, winning the league was a magnificent achievement considering where we started from. That’s what made it so special.

     

     

    But in hard non emotional facts ; Why was winning the league so important.?

    Good morning – either you are getting me mixed up with someone else, or, are seriously misrepresenting something that I have posted.

     

     

    The post you refer to @ 7:51 is in fact an answer in agreement with you. Gloating is something I abhor and I never indulge. Anything I have said surrounding Seville has been even-handed – probably slightly complementary to Rangers & their fans…..very puzzled!!!

    Forget about what player’s are going over at Ibrox ,ffs some on here are obsessed with Sevco ,We Celtic need a rebuild with good players being signed if we have to have a good run in The Champions League and retaining the title ,personally this Celtic team are good but I don’t thing we will go far with the present squad ☘️🧤

    Had a choice – he took it.

     

     

    No hard feelings from me at all.

     

     

    But he is not an option IMHO.

     

     

    Same age, pedigree and ball at feet skills as Joe.

     

     

    Next “big signing” keeper we get need to be at least 5 years younger. (again IMHO)
