TIERNEY’S HAMPDEN HOPES
KIERAN TIERNEY tonight hopes to join the growing ranks of young Scots winning a first international cap during Gordon Strachan’s reign.
The Celtic left-back looks likely to get some game time in the friendly encounter against Denmark at the national stadium this evening.
And that means he will be added to ex-Celts Tony Watt (Charlton) and Paul Caddis (Birmingham City) who made their baptisms at the top level in last Thursday’s 1-0 win over the Czech Republic in Prague. Aberdeen midfielder Kenny McLean also made his bow against the Euro 2016 finalists.
Ex-Hoops boss Strachan is now pondering on unleashing a few more bright babes on the international scene with 18-year-old Tierney leading the way for senior cap hopefuls Scott Bain (Dundee), Jamie Murphy (Brighton), John McGinn (Hibs), Oliver Burke (Nottingham Forest) and Liam Cooper (Leeds United).
The Scots supremo has watched Tierney several times this season since the Isle of Man-born teenager ousted Honduras international Emilio Izaguirre in the SPFL champions’ back four.
Strachan said: ““He has played European football against top sides, so that’s been a benefit to him, to Celtic and to us.
“He did not look out of place in the games I’ve seen him
“As far as I’m concerned, if you are playing in a successful team, you are ready for international level.
“It doesn’t matter to me if you are Gordon Greer at 34-35, or someone at 18.”
