Time for an EBT mea culpa from Scotland manager

215

Alex McLeish is busy preparing for his first game as Scotland manager this weekend.  It is a gig he will be delighted to have, now that he has confirmation HM Revenue & Customs are on his case for tax due when Rangers paid him through an Employee Benefit Trust (EBT).

The reach of the Rangers’ EBT recipients runs deep in Scottish football.  The Scotland manager is employed by people who were promoted during an EBT recipient’s presidency, who refused the SPFL’s request for a review into the EBT scandal.  And, his performance will be reviewed by EBT recipients now working in the media.

There are others active in the SFA and the media who had nothing to do with EBTs, but many of these people have been friends for over 20 years.  They will not be so indiscrete as to embarrass a friend by suggesting their actions brought our game into disrepute.

The consequence for Rangers were absolute.  The consequence for the recipients will vary from an inconvenience, to financial ruin, but we have had no candour from any of them, no mea culpa.  I have no axe to grind with McLeish, and I prefer some recipients who work in the media to several former Celtic players, but blindly ignoring their role in the biggest story in Scottish football in half a century discredits us all.

Alex, you are Scotland manager, sit down with a journalist you respect and tell him how wrong this sorry business was.

You are obviously more aware of what is going on than I am, so i am disappointed to hear you say that.

Are you in a position to explain? If not, no worries.

I read JF’s article, and while it was short on detail about what other information is known/what action is planned, I found myself really hoping he was correct.

It is not often that I am happy to be wrong, but were Celtic to do something meaningful, this is one of those cases where I would be more than happy to be wrong.

    MIT,

    Its all really simple,

JF babbled about the great job the Plc done in gathering evidence, they did nothing of the sort, everything was handed to them on a plate and for their part it was and still is not enough.

JF swallowed the last pile of shite the Plc spouted about the support of other club’s, completely moot argument. The Plc are responsible to represent and protect ALL Celtic shareholders interests, that is not for other clubs.

Res12 laid out the only non-litigious path available to them for a fair hearing, through the CFCB. For the last 5 years they have refused to take this path, forcing us to go through the SFA, the perpetrators and the object of our dissatisfaction.

I’m no legal eagal but I know satisfaction will never come from asking these perpetrators to own up or carry out an unbiased investigation into their own failures. That was expected and why Res12 asks for the CFCB, as the most appropriate and qualified authority to investigate.

By claiming the Plc were more supportive than they where implies they have a plan, from my experience their plan is to kill Res12.

They are in possession of definitive information that proves all allegations are true, since early June and done nothing with it.

Their last contact was to find out why the letter was sent to the SFA. From my understanding of the last meeting 10th July they had not even asked the SFA for a response to the letter sent 25th June, this became their action from that meeting, to date no response has been received and no meeting date fixed.

The information currently in the Plc’s possession should have resulted in a call to the fraud squad as that is what the legal and accountancy institutions code of conduct/ethic demands of members when they have proof of corruption, no?

  7. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

In fact they never even needed proof, that’s why the fraud squad exist, to investigate and collect any evidence/proof and decide if there is a case to be answered, when a complaint is made. There is and has been for a long time, enough evidence to make a complaint, I’ll leave it there for now.

HH mate, and best of luck to you and the resolution 12 rebels.

    Imho, which means hee-haw……

I think it’ll take an empty Celtic Park, or a series of them, to kick the PLC’s erchie onto the resolution 12 issue.

The PLC have brought in Brendan to get the park filled and fend off any empty seat rebellion, re: resolution 12, or, the same club issues. The PLC laid a sneaky trap, with the huns coming back into the top league with Celtic, Brendan arrived at the same time, resolution 12 issues were bubbling, just, under the surface at that point, and the PLC charged Celtic supporters £49:00 for tickets to see us playing an apparently, new club called Sevco FC, and Celtic supporters queued up and bought the tickets without one mention of the same club issue. Makes you think what the last eight 8 years has been all about ?

It’s so easy to feel sympathy for the Celtic supporters when they’ve been mugged.

I still don’t know how to feel about the Celtic supporters, when they’ve been mugged off, by themselves ?

Maybe when the Celtic supporters queue up to buy their £50:00 Old Firm same club tickets, it might be appropriate to issue each supporter with their own banjo!

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it, as will others who read your note, I am sure. Much of what you say fits with my experience of dealing with administrative tribunals; because they are less formal than courts, they can be less predictable. But there aren’t necessarily the same safeguards to ensure fairness that one would find in a proper court.

I can hear the frustration in your voice. I, too, am sceptical of anything that the Board says or does now.

My concern is that real change could have been achieved had Celtic pushed for it at the outset. Now, any small crumb of change will be used to ‘prove’ that Celtic actually tried to do something. But, we can’t go back and change history, so we move forward.

The only thing I will say is that, having done this for 25 years now, a few months might be a long time to normal people, but in legal terms it isn’t (we lawyers move slowly usually). So, if, as you say, they have been in possession of the relevant information since early June, in legal terms, that is not necessarily a long time.

Not intended as a criticism in any way. Just a thought from someone who shares your distrust of the Board, but is still looking for a glimmer of hope.

I hope one day to have the pleasure of meeting you in person. I would like to shake your hand and buy you a beer or two or three.

    =========================

    That about sums it up.

However Celtic were not given forever to reply and steps are underway for a follow up meeting to one held on 10 August.

What Canalamar says is true about who made the running and chances are Res12 would have died in the JPDT long grass, but steps were taken to put new info to the SFA in June and the meeting on 10 August was to get Celtic involved in the absence of any reply from the SFA, given Celtic’s reluctance to do so earlier.

I think that is about as much as needs to be said in public until Celtic provide answers to the points presented on 10 August and their basis under UEFA FFP.

A follow up meeting is to be scheduled in the coming week and from there it will become much clearer what needs to be done next, some of which JF covers, but does not rule out the fraud route if FFP was breached to obtain that licence in 2011.

That is what Res12 set out to establish and that part is now more or less complete as a result of Res12er efforts.

What happens next was always going to be interesting.

  12. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    BMCUWP,

he was at the meeting that’s why I said he swallowed it. He never thought to ask why other teams should care about Celtic shareholders or the share price.

    Kev,

Celtic supporters are just that, its entertainment, while its exhilarating and great to babble about. While having something to rebel against and spleen venting are therapeutic, its apparently more important than a boring fair society, so maintaining the status quo suits most Celtic supporters, it must be the education. There’s as many idiot tims as idiot huns, the rest are more concerned with making sure their family get more than they did..

    MIT,

There are minutes of a meeting and court documents that prove rangers accepted liability before 31st March 2011, it does not take three months to understand the implications, what will take three months is how to find/invent an interpretation that can/will create ambiguity.

Look forward to a beer or eight and I’ll stand my round, this adventure was not done for gratitude, it was the right thing to do.

  19. Sorry if this has been covered already.

Do we have many first team players on International duty this week?

  20. Res 12 is part of the wider corruption that engulfed Scottish football from the moment Murray took over the Ibrox club. The SFA aided and abetted throughout. The list is endless :

    – EBTs

    – Media briefings

    – Scotland withdrawls

    – Scotland Managers

    – Referees

Res 12 is a focal point of all the corruption and need to addressed as the SFA are in the dock ; I could give a list of reasons why Celtic have actually dragged their heels.

However with Dave King in place he is trying to replay some of Murrays moves. Of course he will be fairly limited in that approach but already we have seen the Referees helping the Ibrox club. Also the EBT plants in the media toe the party line and an RFC /EBT Scotland manager highlights nothing has changed. We have had targetted campaigns against individuals in the SFA Board and SPL whilst they continue to rack up debt.

Dave King is on a mini Murray mission which likely could crash and burn ( hopefully).

With this background and in the interests of our shareholders Celtic PLC need to place the artillery on the Hampden car park. Fergus would have went after them. The new SFA CEO has had his 90 days. Celtic need to tell him there are 2 paths —- clean out or Celtic will take him personally and the SFA all the way.

The nice guy approach doesnt work !

Saw the film at a screening in Edinburgh on Wednesday (film called The Ballymurphy Precedent) followed by a Q&A with the director, Callum Macrae.

Powerful and emotional and I was left in no doubt that this was premeditated murder by the Paras, sanctioned by the highest level of the British Military.

This was the same tactics as Bloody Sunday in Derry 5 months later (hence the Precedent). Derry was high profile and was filmed providing worldwide exposure, Ballymurphy was not and apart from the anguish of the families (separately, until they became organised together in recent years) was not widely known. Anyone watching this film will know that after Ballymurphy, the decision to deploy the Paras in Derry would definitely result in multiple innocent deaths there as well.

The decency and the dignity of the families is evident throughout and it is a “must see” for not only those interested in Irish history but for anyone wanting to see injustice identified, highlighted and redressed.

  22. Conspiracy theories now ?

Listen, I am not even going to respond in full to Canamalar or any of the other nonsense that’s being put out here today. “Perhaps that’s why he’s involved in The Celtic Noise now?” Jesus, if someone has something to say let them come out and say it.

What is the allegation? That I’m a board stooge ?

    Me? Hahahahahaha.

Ask the Happy Clappers on here if they believe that. Ask Lawwell himself. I have lashed that man and that board all the way through the summer … except on this.

So what, I’m a stooge only when it matters?

Perhaps I’m a plant? Perhaps all my negative articles were written to lend credibility to a con job.

Perhaps that’s all I am, a con man.

Except all of you know better than that, and this level of hunnic paranoia is not fit for this site.

There are ton of inaccuracies in Canamalar’s own post, such as the assertion that I said the club had “gathered all the evidence.” I did not. I said the club KNOWS everything now, and that much of it was in the public domain … I didn’t say how they obtained it.

I am not interested in discussing this with anybody. I never get into debate which starts and proceeds in the manner of a character assassination. Why should I? My own bona fides are all out there, online. Anyone who has an issue with me can join the new forum, but keep it civil.

  23. Personally speaking, I don’t care who thinks I write shite. All day, every day.

Goes with the territory. It’s part of the job.

But I object – strongly, vocally, forevermore – to the idea that I am in anyone’s pocket, that I am “fed lines”, that I am some kind of puppet on a string. It’s bullshit.

And anyone who knows me properly knows it is.

The stuff I write, you have no idea the amount of grief I get, from many quarters.

    Yet I do it.

If you think I’ll willingly poke the Loyalist lunatic fringe with a stick, provoking them at every turn, whilst living in Glasgow, whilst writing under my own name, even as I dance to a tune played by the Celtic board … I mean, it’s contemptible nonsense. Nobody tells me what to write. Threats haven’t stopped me writing what I think is right … Peter Lawwell giving me the evil eye certainly won’t.

Some people here have a hard time accepting anything that appears to come out of the club. When did they start hating their own club so much? Some of them believe the most atrocious garbage that Celtic has somehow aided and abetted Sevco on its way to the SPL … I suggest checking in somewhere for the sake of your sanity.
