Time for an inquest into fragile Celtic limbs

822

One of the things Neil Lennon may have on his agenda for the international break is an inquest into the physical condition of his playing squad.  The season is a month old and Celtic have an injury list which would wipe out pretty much every other team in the country.  If this was an isolated occurrence it would be no more than curious but we have written about, and discussed, the fragile limbs of Celtic players since the Lennoxtown Training Centre opened nearly five years ago.

Since then Celtic ‘lost’ (more on that at a later date) three leagues by a maximum of six points and lost valuable form and points due to first choice players sitting in the stands on match day.

On Saturday our central midfield was without Ledley, Brown, Wanyama, Kayal and McGeouch (on a non-fitness related injury), while even auxiliary stand-in for central mid, Charlie Mulgrew, was on the list of others getting treatment.

The run of bad luck has moved clearly into the realms of statistical relevance.  It is not luck at all, we are doing something wrong.

Football clubs look to sports science to deliver multiple objectives.  Competitive pressure is put on players to become faster and to be able to run as effectively late in games as they can in the opening minutes (which for now is a physical impossibility but remains a key target), but we are clearly missing a trick.

‘Finally, a definitive and coherent explanation from FF:’

Which ignores the fact that FIFA and SFA rules state that players’ contracts of employment are with the CLUB.

Now, if the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations applied to the players’ contracts (and they did) it means that their contracts had to be transferred from one employer to another. It wouldn’t have applied if the employer ie the CLUB had continued in existence.

The contracts of employment were transferred from the old CLUB to the new CLUB. That’s why TUPE came into play.

I posted this link last night under the header 23 minutes of ecstasy. For those of you who’ve not seen it it’s well worth a look. I found when clearing out old folders and files from my computer and came across a word document with various links I’d posted on the old DR hunskelping site. Its sure to gladden the heart and bring a smile to the face of any Celtic minded person.

I’ve now moved it to my “never to be deleted vault” for safe keeping.

That theory has been espoused before but as far as I’m aware has no precedents and no merit. Are they really trying to say that SDM was never Chairman of their Football Club?

In Footballing terms it is the “Club” that is responsible to the Games Authorities to ensure good governance and compliance with the rules and regulations.

A few weeks ago I cited the Southampton administration as a case in point.

Southampton had been in finacial difficulties for sometime and had restructured, leaving the majority of the debt with the (actual) parent company – in R@ngers case this would have been The Rangers Group – Southampton argued that it was the parent company not the Incorprated Club that went into administration.

They did not want the points deduction that would have seen them being demoted.

However the English League took the view that although it wasn’t the Incorporated Club that went into adminisration for all intents an purposes it was the Clubs debts that had forced the parent Company into administration and it was their responsibility and were subsequently deducted the points.

In R@ngers F Cs situation it is much clearer, it was the Club NOT the parent Company (The Rangers Group) that went into administration, also it was debts associated with Footballing activities that led to their insolvency.

The SFA and New Rangers seem to be arguing for the opposite of the English League’s findings, that is, a Club can’t escape it’s financial responsibilities by manipulating it’s Corporate identity.

  9. Hi Guys,

seems to be a bit of mis-information on the blog this morning regarding ticket prices for the St Johnstone game.

Adult prices are £26 (same as a league game at CP) and concessions £13 (£4 cheaper than at CP), and they have set up a family section where an adult can get in for £20 and take one child for free.

    Seems pretty decent to me.

Let’s get up there and support our team and the clubs that stood up to the bullies!

  11. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

We have all seen Arsene Wenger’s ability to spot a player, and to bring him in at a ridiculously low price.

Then turn him into a star.

It’s how he made his name.

But,around ten years ago,he made his first big-ticket splahes (with the exception of £10m on Henry)in spending nearly £30m combined on Jeffers, a dodgy keeper from Ipswich, and a Dutch left-back whom he later gave away for free to placate Barca for poaching Fabregas.

Admittedly, van Bronckhurst did rather well with the sun on his back.

Since then, there has been an endless list of big-money buys, most of whom have been brutal.

I wish I could remember them all,but they were so poor as to be easily forgotten.

I’ll start you off with Reyes,Eduardo and Wiltord..

The latest failure is to give Arshavin a free just t get him off the wage bill.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/arsenal/9521285/Arsenal-prepared-to-give-Andrei-Arshavin-a-free-transfer-in-hope-of-securing-move-to-Dynamo-Moscow.html

No wonder Arsene has a reputation for not spending money-he’s just not very good at it!

Alex Ferguson’s recent purchases-since maybe Anderson and Nani-are following the same pattern.

  16. Surprised to see CM return to the Scotland camp last night after receiving treatment at Lennoxtown. He is still highly unlikely to play against Serbia due to the nature of his injury

I am bemused as to why he has not pulled out of the squad. If he aggravates his Achilles playing for Scotland instead of resting, he will almost certainly miss our first 2 CL games

  17. Good Moaning,

I’ve just logged on and only read back a couple of pages. I was caught by the comments you’ve been making about the line in the John Thomson song. I too never thought the word was ‘Wellesley’ and all my years, I’ve been singing, ‘…from the wells o’ Fife he came’.

I knew he worked down the pits for a while and I guess, without thinking about it too deeply, I associated the word ‘wells’ with the word ‘pits’. Tenuous I know but that’s what you do when you’re young isn’t it? Think back to the nonsense you used to sing in mass when you thought a word sounded like a word you knew. You just sang it without thinking about it!

However, I’ve now had a wee look at Wikipedia and it says John Thomson was born in Kirkcaldy but grew up in the mining community of Cardenden. He joined his dad down Bowhill Colliery at the age of 14 and in season 1924/25 he played in goal for Bowhill Rovers. The following season he joined Wellesley Juniors.

So there you have it. Thank you guys for instigating the enlightenment. All these years I’ve been living in blissful ignorance. Bet I’m not the only one though, am I?

  21. That video for Oscar Knox : heartbreaking desperate love for a child who is suffering so much. I know there is so much suffering for children worldwide, and at times it all feels so inadequate, what one human can do in the face of it all. But if you can help one, even just one, close to home, then you are doing something. Something good, altruistic.

So, that’s why I do what I can. Because it’s real, and it might just help.
