Time for an inquest into fragile Celtic limbs

822

One of the things Neil Lennon may have on his agenda for the international break is an inquest into the physical condition of his playing squad.  The season is a month old and Celtic have an injury list which would wipe out pretty much every other team in the country.  If this was an isolated occurrence it would be no more than curious but we have written about, and discussed, the fragile limbs of Celtic players since the Lennoxtown Training Centre opened nearly five years ago.

Since then Celtic ‘lost’ (more on that at a later date) three leagues by a maximum of six points and lost valuable form and points due to first choice players sitting in the stands on match day.

On Saturday our central midfield was without Ledley, Brown, Wanyama, Kayal and McGeouch (on a non-fitness related injury), while even auxiliary stand-in for central mid, Charlie Mulgrew, was on the list of others getting treatment.

The run of bad luck has moved clearly into the realms of statistical relevance.  It is not luck at all, we are doing something wrong.

Football clubs look to sports science to deliver multiple objectives.  Competitive pressure is put on players to become faster and to be able to run as effectively late in games as they can in the opening minutes (which for now is a physical impossibility but remains a key target), but we are clearly missing a trick.

    We can spend millions on methadone on wasted people and we cant provide funds or treatment for kids like Oscar and Olivia Downie. Shocking truely shocking.

  7. 67 Heaven, their are some people out there who think that Newco are going

    to get off scot free and I heard this from two fellows outside CP last Wednesday

    Evening when I was having a cigarette before going into the Holy Ground to

    watch the match.

    No doubt they are getting this info from the misleading media.

    There IS no comparison between children with cancer and druggies. Ive stood in chemist shops and they drag their kids in while they Q up to get their meth!! So the kids grow up thinking this is normal. Millions and MILLIONS is thrown at them.

    Only The East Neuk.

    Neuk is pronounced Nuke.

  15. Andrew67,

    By pure coincidence I was driving between Buckhaven and Methil the other day, right down at the coast, and drove along a street called Wellesley… something. That isn’t too near Cardenden however so Wellesley must be a name used in a few places in that part of Fife me thinks.

    Monaghan,

    While I know the Brenninkmijers are a Dutch family, didn’t the founders of the firm come from Germany?

    I didn’t know the answer to that ’till Tallybhoy told us.

    …………..

    Methadone, does not work. It occasionally used to work when the plan was to gradually reduce the dose until the addict was weaned off. However the thinking now is for the addict to stay on the same or indeed a higher dose of Methadone until the day they die. It is the biggest waste of money spent on medication in the NHS. GP prescribing budgets are being slashed, but more and more money is being ploughed into the Methadone programme when it will do nothing at all as from what I’ve seen first hand the majority of addicts still take heroin in addition to their methadone dose.

    ‘Alex Ferguson’s recent purchases-since maybe Anderson and Nani-are following the same pattern’

    Even more puzzling is that Fergie thinks Wellbeck + Rafael are worthy of a starting place in a Man Utd side

    ~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    There has been a glut of bright young things coming through the Man U recently,who have failed before they are about twenty-two.
    That’s not the AF way.
    Are they being burnt-out,or just not good enough?
    Apart from the two you mentioned there are the likes of Evans,Cleverley,Gibson,Macheda…..
    On top of that,he has an injury-prone,slow and ageing central-defensive pairing,and Smalling/Jones ain’t the answer.
    Oh,and his midfield is over-reliant on two players who are nearly as old as me-at least in footballing terms!
    Nope,I fear for them this year,and I fear for Sir Alex’s legacy.
    Has he simply tried to build one more team than even he was able to?
    Or did he just lose his touch?
    I dunno.
    Maybe his brother retired. That would explain a lot……..
