Time for an inquest into fragile Celtic limbs

822

One of the things Neil Lennon may have on his agenda for the international break is an inquest into the physical condition of his playing squad.  The season is a month old and Celtic have an injury list which would wipe out pretty much every other team in the country.  If this was an isolated occurrence it would be no more than curious but we have written about, and discussed, the fragile limbs of Celtic players since the Lennoxtown Training Centre opened nearly five years ago.

Since then Celtic ‘lost’ (more on that at a later date) three leagues by a maximum of six points and lost valuable form and points due to first choice players sitting in the stands on match day.

On Saturday our central midfield was without Ledley, Brown, Wanyama, Kayal and McGeouch (on a non-fitness related injury), while even auxiliary stand-in for central mid, Charlie Mulgrew, was on the list of others getting treatment.

The run of bad luck has moved clearly into the realms of statistical relevance.  It is not luck at all, we are doing something wrong.

Football clubs look to sports science to deliver multiple objectives.  Competitive pressure is put on players to become faster and to be able to run as effectively late in games as they can in the opening minutes (which for now is a physical impossibility but remains a key target), but we are clearly missing a trick.

  7. Celtic’s deadline day signing Lubos Kamenar has been left off the club’s squad list for the group stages of the Champions League. The Slovakian goalkeeper, recruited from FC Nantes last Friday, will as a

result be ineligible to play in the club’s six games against Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.

Squad lists released by UEFA show Fraser Forster and Lukasz Zaluska are Neil Lennon’s two goalkeeping picks. Other recent signings Efe Ambrose, Lassad Nouioui and Miku Fedor are

included. Rabiu Ibrahim is again left out. The Celtic boss was only able to pick 22 players on List A for the competition, having failed to meet the quota to fill all 25 players. Eight places are reserved from homegrown squad members, of which the club name just five on their

main list. Joe Chalmers, James Forrest and Marcus Fraser could have been included on the main list to fulfil the quota but were instead named on List B. In any

case, all three will be free to play in Celtic’s Champions League matches.

Many thanks 4 your words Sir. Slovaks are not ideal but their presence in UK brought more positives than negatives for UK budget i guess. They must be more payers than receivers from uk social system. I am working for foreign company (Belgian one) here in Bratislava. Before that i used 2 work for austrian comp. And germans as well. And during those10 yrs i met good experts but also people from those countries whose added value was 0. There is a lot of mystery about us in western eu. May be i am wrong, dunno.

  13. Terry O – It’s apoint scoring system based on your score on each hole; a par gets you 2 points, a birdie 3 etc. All golfers agreed on the system before tee off, it was only later back in the Celtic Club and with Gerry mildly gloating, that the system was challenged:) just the usual pub banter.

Haven’t read back, but agree with everything you say …….. What some British critics seem to forget is that many, many British people have emmigrated throughout history……. Immigrants should adopt the overall ‘basket’ of the Country they migrate to…seems fair to me, as long as immigration and emmigration numbers are ‘managed’ in a balanced / professional / caring manner ….migration is a basic human right……just to be clear, illegal migration is a no no…….
