Time for Celtic to box clever

806

Salzburg got back to winning ways on Sunday after losing 4-1 away to third-placed Rheindorf Altach immediately before the international break.  The stats from that game are interesting.  Salzburg enjoyed 60% possession but Rheindorf forced 66% more chances by playing on the break, scoring twice in the closing 10 minutes as Salzburg pushed for an equaliser.

A point on Thursday would be an acceptable result for Salzburg so they could be caught between trying to defend and playing their normal game.  Either way it’s likely they will hold possession for long periods.

No team is completely dependent on one player but this truism is probably tested more by Salzburg and their talismanic striker, Jonathan Soriano, who has scored 26 times in 27 outings this season.  Consider for a moment if we had such a prodigious striker………..

Salzburg coach Adolf Hutter must decide how far tp change his usual game plan.  Salzburg’s entire strategy is to attack.  They have scored 50 league goals already this season, twice as many as any other team, while their goals against record is within a handful of the majority of teams in the league.

My preference would be to tempt them out, have them fall between the two stools of playing their natural offensive game and the more cautious approach they may be tempted to play away in Europe.  One note of caution, the Ajax team who beat Celtic comfortably in Amsterdam last season were shredded 0-3 by a counter-attacking Salzburg in the same venue a few months later.

Ajax failed to box clever, we can be smarter.  Stop Soriano, closed-down space at the back and play on the counter.

  1. G67-too many guys who can’t get goalside when not in possession possibly? Would think about 4-5-1 or 4-4-1-1.Wakaso and Brown covering Izzy and Matthews. Not the most attacking ,but a formation we might need to adopt if we get further in EL.HH

  2. So Andy Goram thinks the huns can still win the league as they have previous under current management for blowing a 15 point lead.

That’s more bonehead than De Bono imo.

I agree confidence wise but there must be a role for Efe. He is a very able player. I think playing him in the holding role is worth a go. I think we have tried plenty there and they haven;t looked at it. His pass rate was very decent in the World Cup to be honest. I think he is a far better player than most people give him credit for. A bit of support for the Bhoy and he could be back to his best.

Croatian authorities have awarded Dinamo a 3-0 victory re the game which Hadjuk Split refused to play .

Italian rumor mongers have claimed that Dinamo have knocked back AC Milan s tentative attempt to sign Marcelo Brozovic for 5 million euros . Same rumor mongers claim that Arsenal and Chelsea are willing to pay more . He is a fine player.

What happened to you Saturday, where you still busy from the previous weekend? :-)

  20. We need to win the midfield on Thursday night, it’s one thing conceding it to Dundee, if we do it against quality opposition we’re in trouble, and I wouldn’t assume with SB being back that winning the midfield is guaranteed. If he plays Forrest and Commons (non ball winners) in a midfield 4 we’ll get stuffed imo. Charlie, Stefan and Scott are must starters for us to have a winning chance,

With Guidetti out I guess Stokes will be the lone Striker, or maybe Stokes and Scepovic with Stokes part of a midfield 5, that would work, imo,

Come the weekend hope he plays Guidetti and Griffiths against Hearts, that would almost guarantee us a win,

On the other hand a Euro hangover coupled with an ‘experimental line up’ and we’re out, imo,

Given the choice of only winning the one game I’d choose the Hearts game

  21. Collum is the referee for Sunday.

Jambo’s at work are seething and insist we will get everything and there is no point in them turning up. They have 5k tickets yet to sell.

I pointed them in the direction of the penalty he gave old Rangers with his back to the incident.

They just laughed and said that referee’s have always been Rangers first and Celtic 2nd we will get everything on Sunday.

I hope they are right but in my opinion Collum is just completely hopeless.

I also notice Scott Brown is suspended for the Zagreb match if he is booked on Thursday. If we don’t get the result we need then Brown will be vital in Zagreb. Hopefully he can avoid a card but I can’t see it.
