Time for Celtic to box clever

806

Salzburg got back to winning ways on Sunday after losing 4-1 away to third-placed Rheindorf Altach immediately before the international break.  The stats from that game are interesting.  Salzburg enjoyed 60% possession but Rheindorf forced 66% more chances by playing on the break, scoring twice in the closing 10 minutes as Salzburg pushed for an equaliser.

A point on Thursday would be an acceptable result for Salzburg so they could be caught between trying to defend and playing their normal game.  Either way it’s likely they will hold possession for long periods.

No team is completely dependent on one player but this truism is probably tested more by Salzburg and their talismanic striker, Jonathan Soriano, who has scored 26 times in 27 outings this season.  Consider for a moment if we had such a prodigious striker………..

Salzburg coach Adolf Hutter must decide how far tp change his usual game plan.  Salzburg’s entire strategy is to attack.  They have scored 50 league goals already this season, twice as many as any other team, while their goals against record is within a handful of the majority of teams in the league.

My preference would be to tempt them out, have them fall between the two stools of playing their natural offensive game and the more cautious approach they may be tempted to play away in Europe.  One note of caution, the Ajax team who beat Celtic comfortably in Amsterdam last season were shredded 0-3 by a counter-attacking Salzburg in the same venue a few months later.

Ajax failed to box clever, we can be smarter.  Stop Soriano, closed-down space at the back and play on the counter.

We paid a smidgeon over £2M for Scepovic.

As matchday bank staff, he’ll be on zero hours, minimum wage.

Good shout on Griffith’s for Sunday. He loves scoring against that mob. Scott Brown also has a decent scoring record against the Jambo’s. I am hoping for 5 goals but will settle for 3.

I’d be inclined to go with Brown, Mulgrew Johansen in the tried and (increasingly) trusted midfield, with Wakaso and Forrest either side of Scepovic.

Don’t see any point playing Stokes in Europe. Only so many times you can hope he performs. Long experience now sets expectation.

Did you mean tired and tested midfield? ;-)

I’m not sure Wakaso is going to be fired in and also Scepovic. Can we risk two players who may not be match fit?

We have plenty options but not many that have played a lot of football in the Hoops recently.

I understand he’s just started the multi-skilling programme.

Module 1 – applauding the support in the stand as you jog round to the warm up area behind the goal line.

Playing right back is Module 18 – Providing cover for a player covering for a player who is covering at right back.

I expect to see Stoksey on Thursday, his link up play with izzy, his corners and his tracking back for defensive duties are all needed for this game, plus he might even score a goal.

There’s only 2 that want to go to La Laterna, that’s you and me,shall I book it, or do you fancy lunch in The Millenium, that would be change for me, had breakfast in there but never lunch. let me know what you fancy.

    Not aware Wakaso is injured.

Seemed a fairly mobile player when I’ve seen him, fast and aggressive, and can cross and shoot pretty well.

Forrest is the kind of player you need to worry the opponents, and he looked very good on Saturday.

With Scepovic we can at least hope he’s got something…

One half at a time. John Guidetti appears to love cup football.

I imagine he will be bursting a gut to put this lower league opponent down. I expect him to bag at least one each half though.

  13. Scepovic can’t possibly be match fit.

Is it worth taking a chance on him?

    I’d play Griffiths.

    So ah wid!

  14. See the good old scottish media battling to keep mcmoist in his dream job, goram,Bett and brown telling the world it’s not ally fault, good on them hopefully it works

  16. LiviBhoy – I’d play 4 5 1 on Thurday night with Lee as the lone striker, but cant see it, Stokesy will get the nod.

I am afraid I agree with you on the way Salzburg will approach the Game on Thursday.

I also feel a draw will be a good result for us.As BT said earlier I think we blew it against Astra.I still hope we can get a win.HH

  19. Wakaso! had forgotten about him, if we start with Wakaso Commons and Forest – 3 non tackling non ball winners – we’re out, imo.

The only reason I mention that possibility is because we have previous for mind boggling team selections – keep hoping the penny will drop with Ronnie and recently there has been some positive signs that finally it has.

  20. Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama had his house broken into during last night’s match with Aston Villa, according to Kenyan media reports.

Among the items reportedly taken were his 4×4 car, electronics, designer clothing and jewellery.

Wanyama is said to be “distraught” at the theft.

Shocking stuff. They better hope big Victor doesn’t get a hold of them.

  21. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

A long , simmering suspicion has now grown into a confident belief. Celtic supporters are no longer special. It feels like the majority are only happy when we win handsomely. Anything less is considered ` crap` and/or ` shite`. I believe this is mainly in response to their being told by the MSSM that Scottish football, without Rangers, is dreadful.

On occasions, when we forget all about the MSSM nonsense, we can be wonderful. Barcelona ,2-1, being the best example. I also believe that Thursday will produce real support. When the crowd is not much over 30,000,there seems to be a greater number of the type of supporter who gets behind the players and, as a consequence, the performance is raised.

Let`s , once again, bring back the thunder.

I could meet for lunch but my train doesn’t get in to Queen St until 1.15. Could make either La Laterna or Millennium for around 1.30 if that suits? Will have to drop off my bag at hotel afterwards before I do anything else though! Please let me know either way – thanks.

  23. Can’t remember who posted about it earlier from the irish Times but the FAI man has apologised.

John Delaney, the Football Association of Ireland chief executive, has apologised after being caught on video singing an Irish nationalist song in a pub.

Delaney was filmed singing ‘The Ballad of Joe McDonnell’, about a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army who died in a 1981 prison hunger strike.

“I do accept that if I have upset anybody here, I’m sorry,” Delaney told Irish broadcaster RTE.

“It’s a typically Irish thing we do. We sing songs amongst our group and you expect it to be kept to the group.”
