Time for Celtic to box clever

806

Salzburg got back to winning ways on Sunday after losing 4-1 away to third-placed Rheindorf Altach immediately before the international break.  The stats from that game are interesting.  Salzburg enjoyed 60% possession but Rheindorf forced 66% more chances by playing on the break, scoring twice in the closing 10 minutes as Salzburg pushed for an equaliser.

A point on Thursday would be an acceptable result for Salzburg so they could be caught between trying to defend and playing their normal game.  Either way it’s likely they will hold possession for long periods.

No team is completely dependent on one player but this truism is probably tested more by Salzburg and their talismanic striker, Jonathan Soriano, who has scored 26 times in 27 outings this season.  Consider for a moment if we had such a prodigious striker………..

Salzburg coach Adolf Hutter must decide how far tp change his usual game plan.  Salzburg’s entire strategy is to attack.  They have scored 50 league goals already this season, twice as many as any other team, while their goals against record is within a handful of the majority of teams in the league.

My preference would be to tempt them out, have them fall between the two stools of playing their natural offensive game and the more cautious approach they may be tempted to play away in Europe.  One note of caution, the Ajax team who beat Celtic comfortably in Amsterdam last season were shredded 0-3 by a counter-attacking Salzburg in the same venue a few months later.

Ajax failed to box clever, we can be smarter.  Stop Soriano, closed-down space at the back and play on the counter.

I remember a couple of years ago same happened to a couple of Liverpool players when they where away .

think big Dunc put a stop to that though when they tried to do his house..

  2. If we lose and to the caffeine junkies on Thursday and Zagreb win, then we’re on 8, them on 6 and another defeat will put us out.

If we draw and they win, it’s 9 and 6 points. Zagreb would have to beat us by 2 goals or more.

A 1-0 win for them would have us level on 9 points and head to head but our goal difference is better so we should go through.

    Is that right ?

I would rather we had to go there to get a win than a draw TBH. We’re useless at holding on away in Europe.

    Were you there on Saturday?!?

His first ‘touch’ was an air shot! I love Efe the Bhoy. Efe the player is a worry. Efe the defender terrifies me!

Efe the midfielder? Mibbee. But def not on thus night.

A – not unlikely – blunder in such a high stake tie would sound the death knell of his Celtic career.

  5. I thought that Wakaso looked pretty strong and not afraid of putting in a tackle, but he’ll have to be in the team to do that. Definitely worth consideration for Thu, and he tracks back well also, unlike some others.

  6. Zagreb need to win their last 2 games, a draw or a loss in either game for them and we are through.

If we lose to Salzsburg & Zagreb win their two games we are out.

If we draw against Salzburg & Zagreb win their two games it goes on goal difference between Zagreb & ourselves.

Solution beat Salzburg and take Zagreb out of the equation.

I’m afraid I wasn’t there on Saturday. I was at a kids party with LB Jr and Mrs LB. Another Bhoy who went to the games with me years ago was there with his Bhoy. We both sat miserable checking the score and questioning where our lives had gone wrong.

Your right about Germany. A squad of us were in Stuttgart 03 and after the game a Stuttgart fan stuck us up a round of drinks. Even though they lost the tie, they were in full praise of the Celtic support. That was a great trip, the coach journey from Hahn airport was a three hour long singsong, stopping at service stations to replenish the beers.

That mob went there the following year and as expected, are not welome back.

  12. In my opinion 9 players are nailed on certainties. Assuming Lustig is injured, it has to be Gordon,Matthews, Izzy, Denayer, Virgil, Brooney, Charlie, Johansen, & wee James. The last 2 will be between Stokes, Griffiths, Scepovic, Wakaso, Commons & McGregor. My guess on last two Stokes & Commons.

    ——

“If only our club had a board that would react to things like this and the severe case of double standards.

We as a club should be demanding his resignation”

“When we are finally sorted. Hopefully in the not too distant future.

The clear double standards used against Rangers in just about every way possible need to be addressed.”

    ——

    “Quite agree.

Any new owners will need to have a team on board to deal with things like this. Once one or two of the cereal Rangers haters have been brought to task the rest will then see that we will not accept the double standards that we have suffered for years.”

“Donald Findlay was booted out our club for singing a traditional song at a Rangers party”

And be sacked with immediate effect

    Tattie munchier”

    ——

“When you think of what has been done to Rangers over the years, the double standards, the manifestly unfair treatment, it is hard to come to any other conclusion that their was a conspiracy—originating from many different quarters—to declare an ‘open season’ on Rangers FC.

Functioning in such a climate, well placed individuals like Delaney didn’t hesitate to use their position to inflict serious damage on the club—perhaps even to destroy it altogether, believing that their actions would never be called into question.

The sad thing is most still don’t or won’t accept any conspiracy in all that has happened to us.”

In my opinion we missed our chance to qualify for the knock out stages when we only drew with Astra. We currently are not playing with a great degree of confidence and Saltzburg will be really tough to beat and we need to gain points in our last group match away from home. I dont feel to confident that we will qualify but I live in hope.It is interesting to see John Collins saying we have offered Guidetti a contract and the ball is in the players court.H.H.

I would have taken this situation at the start of the group. Unbeaten and only a point to qualify. I think we will get it.

On Guidetti and Commons I reckon John is just keeping the fans up to speed. Celtic have learned from the Samaras and Ledley situation last year. It’s now transparent that the club has offered these guys a deal. Unless the players come out and say otherwise. I have a feeling that Kris may depart. I hope not but just have a feeling. I know that Ronny had offered him a coaching role. I wonder if he has refused that or if it is part of the new deal. I assume any of the journo’s at the presser didn;t ask because they are hopeless and probably wanted to ask questions about Swally, Sevco v Celtic and anything else Sevco orientated.

  24. The best I expect from Scepovic is that he is another Pukki

I suspect that he is more likely to be another Balde

On at least 2 occasions in his short number of appearances he has done the old ‘half-step’

Eyal Berkovic was a master at the half-step – when he was 60/40 favourite for a ball that needed him to tackle he took half-steps to get there just too late

  25. Friesdorfer.I’ll be booking into the Millenium at around 1.10pm, maybe meet up when you come of the train.

  27. Was looking up something on wiki last night about two Norwegian players that played for Hibs in 1979.

Issak Refvik and Jan Mathiessen.Hibs had paid for their Air Flights but they got the boat to Leith.I then came across this interesting piece from a Hibs forum from 2011 from a Hibs supporter.

Remember both of their debuts in the league cup against morton, also remember the fight hibs had with the authorities to get them a work permit, if memory serves they didnt let them stay because all the foreign permits had been taken up, but after theyd gone home there was one found, unsurprisingly, for rangers so they could sign prytz (think it was him)

Nothing changes with these people.Getting help even then.HH

Would be happy enough if LG started against RBS , with Wakaso and Forrest sittin wide , with Broony, SJ and Commons In the middle.LG played lone striker away to Croatia for Scotland and played the role well.Just feel he would burst a gut, to get back in favour. We man can be explosive with that left foot.
