Time for the war face, Celtic

399

You can be sure that pretty much everyone at Celtic Park and Lennoxtown has been walking around with a smile on their face since Saturday. The players have delivered enormously this season and now have a few weeks to prepare for a cup final which could deliver the treble.

Before then they face one of the league’s most professional sides. St Johnstone were the last Scottish team to beat Celtic and can still eye the possibility of finishing third.

They will win at Celtic Park if we pitch up with anything short of a focussed and on form first team. I know the cup final is the priority, but we are five games from an incredible achievement.

Long way to go still and I think winning the cup is far more important, but it would be great to establish another record?

3 wins and a draw enough to set the new record!

  4. !!Bada Bing!! (10:38am): “Ronaldo has scored more goals in the Champions League, than 113 of the 135 teams who have played in the competition

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 104 Champions League goals, but he has scored only 24 of those as a Champion. Were it still necessary to be the Champions of your country in order to qualify for Europe’s premier tournament, Ronaldo would have only participated during three seasons, scoring 12 goals each for Manchester United (8 in 2007-8, 4 in 2008-9) and Real Madrid (12 in 2012-13).

Seems within our grasp – but it’s the end of the season, the league is won and there’s a cup that will be attracting the players attention I guess

  6. NatKnow & Davidopoulos, Celtic are still in the running for…

Another treble of League and both domestic cups

The first undefeated Scottish league top division campaign of more than 18 matches

The first fully undefeated (league AND cups) domestic season in Scotland (and the UK?)

Highest number of points in a Scottish league top division season

Highest number of victories in a Scottish league top division season

Highest number of goals scored in a Scottish league top division season

(and possibly the biggest goal difference in a Scottish league top division season?)

A world record winning points margin in a professional national league top division

And there is still time to beat the record home and away winning scores, currently held by Celtic (9-0 v Aberdeen at home and 8-1 v Dunfermline away, I think).

    Lets go break some records!

  7. Hey, provocation, don’t you know!

NEVEr the Huns own responsibility. It’s always that big bad bhoy/Chelsea casuals/the Cops/Neil Lennon/a broken TV…

And now, as their primordal swamp mentality is highlighted globally to sponsors and investors everywhere with their Tiffany song, it’s all the fault of someone else again – IRVINE WELSH! It’s you, IRVINE. You evil Hibee! :

Can’t wait to watch T2 again, now that it’s becoem their self-fulfilled prophecy.

Hilariously, the scene was never even in the original sequel book, ‘Porno’ – only the brilliant concept that Huns customise their pin numbers to 1690 and thereby Renton and Spud were able to rip them for thousands using bootleg bank cards.

It was expanded and augmented superbly for the brutal catch-all pisstake and damning social commentary that was the T2 scene.

They’re going to need to find a READER on FF to explain that to them though.

So I take it that when Sevco fans post racial comments on their websites…they too should be charged under the same Act ?

Furthermore……….What about the thousands of these “Peepil” shouting racist and secterian/bigot chants and songs every week at the football….is that not ALSO “Communicating”…..should they not all be charged also ?

Any statement from Ann Budge yet about assaults on Mikeal Lustig…..any statement from Sevco yet about the assaults by missile throwing, attempted physical assault on Celtic player….not forgetting sheer unadulterated feckin RACISM by their FAN (S) ?…..No didn’t think so.

Scottish football a backwater? Racist abuse and anti-catholic songbook doesn’t help our case

    By Alison McConnell

For more years than we would care to remember now, Scottish football has fought against the backwater tag. Those arriving to our game – players and managers – from outwith these shores are generally transparent about the fact that they were counselled against moving to Scotland with the perception being that it is a step towards oblivion. The fact that English players going so far back as Alan Thompson and Chris Sutton to the more recent visitors such as Fraser Forster would not merit a look from the English FA no matter how high Celtic’s stock was, suggest a futile fight.

This season, whether it has been the relatively regular updates to a largely English based TalkSport audience, briefings with visiting south-of the-border journalists, or a bit of sparring with Premiership giants Manchester City, Brendan Rodgers could argue that he has had some success in shining a positive light on the Scottish game. It is unlikely to have dented too many long-held assumptions and yet as a nation nothing harms us more this week than the antics of the minority.

If anything confirms the prejudices about the Scottish game and the belief we are still out in the sticks, it was the monkey gesture evident in the aftermath of Scott Sinclair’s goal at Ibrox on Saturday. The player’s revelation that it is the first time in his professional career – he is 28 – that he has encountered visible racism paints picture of Scotland as the land that time forgot.

  20. A Stor Mha Chroi on

    Continued: By Alison McConnell

While there is an argument that the actions of just one in a stadium of 50,000 are not an accurate reflection of the majority, there is a feeling that the incident simply scratches the surface. On Tuesday evening, Sinclair was forced again to vocalise his feelings on the matter when a female going by the name of Amy Halcrow, used social media platform Twitter to post a photograph of her young daughter snapped against a mural of monkeys; ‘just bumped into Scott Sinclair at Edinburgh zoo.’ Wha’s like us, eh? Pitiful and cringeworthy, it is a pernicious message about a pervading climate of non-tolerance.

Similarly, our sister newspaper, The Evening Times, published an online video this week of Rangers fans – kids and all – filmed in an Orange hall partying to the full anti-catholic songbook. The Facebook comments it received made for interesting reading, with the general consensus being that this was not newsworthy in the West of Scotland. Really?

Scottish football is never going to be elevated into the top tier of European leagues given the financial disparity in the game but bringing forth views and prejudices give us all baggage that we could well live without. This week has been an embarrassing insight into some of the cultural nuances that we aren’t nearly so far removed from as we might have believed.

    a passion or a lifestyle…..

a perfect world Celtic would never have been formed. Why? Because in a perfect world there would be no poverty. There would be no squalor. In a perfect world people would offer charity without expecting the recipient to renounce their faith. Glasgow in the 1880s was far from a perfect world.

Sligo-born Brother Walfrid created Celtic to aid an impoverished community. A community often shunned because of their faith and nationality. He was driven by a desire to not just save them from poverty but to help them retain their dignity. Through the Poor Children’s Dinner Table and Celtic FC he wanted to put food in the belly and pride in the heart. That’s not romantic revisionism, that’s the reality behind Celtic.

The club’s rapid success on the pitch would see it quickly steer away from these original off-field aspirations. Today such honourable intentions are, bar few exceptions, almost alien to a world of football more concerned with multi-million pound transfers, sponsorship deals, executive boxes and merchandising.

Yet these roots remain a source of great pride for Celtic supporters.
