Time for the war face, Celtic

399

You can be sure that pretty much everyone at Celtic Park and Lennoxtown has been walking around with a smile on their face since Saturday. The players have delivered enormously this season and now have a few weeks to prepare for a cup final which could deliver the treble.

Before then they face one of the league’s most professional sides. St Johnstone were the last Scottish team to beat Celtic and can still eye the possibility of finishing third.

They will win at Celtic Park if we pitch up with anything short of a focussed and on form first team. I know the cup final is the priority, but we are five games from an incredible achievement.

It’s not just in football. There was a lecturer’s strike today and around a thousand people attended a rally in George Square. STV manged to film 3 people on a picket line in Dundee.

  3. Thomas Coupland, What a wonderful maiden post. For once we can drop the statutory “Are you a Hun” question.

What does constitute a club? Badge, stadium, history, soul, spirit or something measurable? Football is littered with R*ngers and football, unfortunately, doesn’t follow the normal rules.

If we had went bust in 1994, moved to somewhere else in Glasgow as the stadium was sold, started in the bottom tier, played in Green and White Hoops would you and me still be celebrating Lisbon this year?

    Margaret McGill

    What do you mean?

    Gorbalstam

Yes, off course it was the consequence but it is also the ultimate football punishment and one that most teams don’t really recover from.

    Do you mean ‘palatable’?

Scottish Football and its lies are not to my taste.

what does that mean: ‘structurally not feasible” they’re skint or the stadium’s waghorned?

No-one disputes that the company is in liquidation. Thanks to the club being incorporated in 1899, it is too.

    https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/SC004276

And now (note different company number) https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/SC425159

    Not the same club.

As for Lisbon, had we gone the way of Rangers (1872-2012), I doubt I’d have been in the mood to celebrate Lisbon this month. However, there’s nothing wrong with a supporter of the dead club celebrating their 1972 Cup Winners’ Cup win, for example, but there is with claiming Sevco has won a European trophy.

And had someone bought the assets in 1994 and started a new club, in 1998 I wouldn’t have been talking about protecting ‘our’ 9-in-a-row.

    No point in deluding yourself.

  17. Thomas Coupland

Great post, and I’m sure we’ll meet up in Lisbon, are you from D&G?

Greene’s QC was pretty clear about what doesn’t constitute a club.

    The Myth of Continuity

Alan Dewar QC, representing Charles Green at the Inner House of the Court of Session, has stated that ” The Rangers football club does not exist, it is an idea in people’s minds, a myth of continuity. No-one knows what the Rangers football club is, but it has no legal personality.”

Mr Dewar adds that ” you can only be the chairman of an entity that has a legal personality. Sevco Scotland, and it alone, bought the assets and carried on the business. The concept of the Rangers Institution continuing exists only in the minds of die hard supporters.”

Mr Dewar was responding to a question by one of the three appeal court judges who inquired: “Why is it so important that Rangers football club is Sevco Scotland rather than an institution going back 100 years?”

    Thomas Coupland,

    What an enjoyable read.

That’s what strikes me about ‘the lisbon stories’. Every one I’ve read so far, whether it be from those who were lucky enough to be there, or from those who had realtives go there, are so full of pride, of happy memories and the sheer joy of being a Celtic fan at the time.

The pride in everyone in what our team had achieved, and the manner in which the cup was won. The way our fans celebrated and conducted themselves and made friends with the locals, so much so that, when hundreds of present day Celts descend on Lisbon in 3 weeks time! I expect they will be welcomed with open arms by those old enough to remember that day 50 years ago, and many new friends will be made.

Can anyone imagine the horror of the people of Barcelona if the Hun attempt something similar ( always in our shadow ) in 2022.

  22. Yesterday afternoon a package came with the wife’s name on it. Delighted she was until it was opened to reveal my Jock Stein tee and the Lisbon book, with a bonus of the Govania book. “Good to yourself aren’t you?” Well, no answer to that one. Big comedown however with the news of the Barca Mole. It’s funny how you think you can see people youv’e not met.

Always good posts. God have mercy on his soul.
