Time on the bench gave Hooper space

1040

This season, Gary Hooper has looked well below form of last term; his touch, movement and goals record don’t match up, but he came off the bench on Thursday to score a truly excellent goal.  Controlling a difficult ball in the centre circle, with defenders in close attendance, he picked out Giorgios Samaras before sprinting past his markers and finishing.

The winner against Motherwell was less spectacular but required sharp movement and spatial awareness.

Footballers cannot always play through bad form, sometimes they need a break, even for an hour on the bench, to get a different perspective on how they and the team play.

Despite his return to form I would retain the same 4-2-3-1 formation against Inverness next time out.

‘What would be a slightly less bad outcome ?

    You have me intrigued. ‘

SPL membership and point penalties for three successive seasons, as an example.

I think Jabba floated something along those lines.

Paul67’s assurance has allowed me to leave my darkened room.

Someone earlier asked what’s Phil’s strategy on this.

All I can say to that is that Phil better not have a strategy and better believe his source is true. Otherwise, how can I believe anything he writes?

This is a matter of journalistic integrity, pure and simple.

  3. Can someone create a downloadable form on here for the fans to fill in and distribute to fellow Bhoys and send to CP? We cannot stand by and let the current “custodians”(sic) sell us down the river.

I remember a rumour on Cup Final morning, verse Motherwell that Hugh Dallas was to be part of the BBC commentary team.

I reacted with disbelief and indignation, and I was so angry, I nearly wrote an email.

Seeing as UEFA (or FIFA) rules would keep them out of Europe for three years anyway then this is still a light punishment. It wont disadvantage them at all.

Cheers! I know some people believe a small guy can mark a bigger player at set pieces and get away with it. I don’t happen to agree with that very much.

My take is the big guys mark the big guys man for man. You get goal side and you get your shoulder in front of the guy your marking and you don’t give him a run at anything

And that’s where I reckon we struggle a bit. We simple don’t have enough height in our team. The man with no surname sussed it and now everyone is doing the same. (That and kick us off the park of course)

They bombard us by firing balls diagonally in to our defensive channels between the full backs and centre half areas and invariably either win the first ball or the second one due to us not being able to clear it far enough and then they swarm all over us. Route one every time.

That and teams intentionally playing for corner kicks and free kicks around the box ala the huns because they know how vulnerable we are from these situations.

Yep…imo we need a couple of more taller commanding players in the air. It would help us at both ends of the park

I’ve remained in awe of Rangers’ media manipulation for the past 10 to 15 years. That in no way means I’m impressed by it. But I end up impressed by what they get away with.

    This’ll be their best though.

This’ll take some beating. Unblemished and welcomed back with open arms.

    Please don’t make me laugh.

And see what we should all remember about all of this? See when we’re all arguing and fighting with each other on here?

We should think of these times and these days and we should ask ourselves one simple question – how would the rest of Scottish Football and media react if it was Celtic in this position?

    And yet we fight…

Hi. You are right about barcelona, but they have some of the most skillfull players in the world. That costs huge amounts of money (and requires being based in an attractive league). we cannot afford (or attract) any such players, so need to, as I say, control the variables that we can control.

Seeing our team roughed up by Arsenal (cringe), the huns, and inter milan (this preseason) showed me that we have (certainly in the past) signed players who are not physically equipped or prepared for modern football.

We can’t pass teams to bits (like barca) but we can score from throw ins and free kicks (like stoke). We should be able to handle most of spl with a blend of football, but if we want to do anything in europe/beating the huns regularly, we need to work on being bigger, and more physical in those games, and capitalising on opportunities from dead ball situations. (ie – defend them, and score from them).

just look at this season – Atletico…. goal direct from a corner – nobody could handle falcao’s height or physicality. Rennes … goal direct from a corner – nobody could handle the captain’s height or physicality.

In short, it’s ok to look like the 7 dwarves if you can play like barcelona. Playing guys like Willo Flood however, just loses you spl titles, and makes you the laughing stock of europe.

    Sad, but true.

  11. Still agitated by Phil’s story. Agitated is probably the best word, as I would consider such an outcome to be a travesty of justice. However in politics it is common to ‘leak’ information just to see how the public receive it. Perhaps someone in CFC is using Phil in this way. Perhaps Phil is doing it off his own back just to get more discussion over the possible scenarios. We know the LaptopLoyal are already playing this game.

If it’s modelling, you’ll be back inside Paradise before ye know it :)

I completely understand where you’re coming from. I read Phil’s article with a growing sense of anger and an increasing feeling of ‘Please, please don’t do this Celtic’.

Would I take to the car park again like we did in 1994?

    You’d better believe it!

Would I turn my back on Celtic?

I just couldn’t do it, mate.

  16. bjmac- I think lobbying other clubs is a waste of time mate, they ALL want to keep timmy down.Look how much “support” Neil got last year from them after getting death threats. We are on our own here,CFC should say nothing until any judgement is made, meanwhile Paul McBride should be going through rule books both here and at UEFA to see what precedents have been previously set.We should be armed for the fight ahead. HH.

  17. My first reaction when I read Phil’s post was,”if this is true, we are looking at Celtic’s Doomsday Scenario”

I thought then, “if true, what would Bob Kelly do?”

After Paul’s reassurance, I have come to the opinion that Phil was issuing a wake up call to us and the club, not to allow events to roll on to a favourable conclusion for them, in the event of an event.

The response has been what I would expect from Celtic supporters. Celtic supporters, not anti-Rangers supporters. That is, to stand by the ethos of the club.

    So, my updated mantra is:-

Celtic. Acquiesce or Resign…What would Bob Kelly do?

None of us has any idea what Celtic are doing behind the scenes – but by expressing our feelings to the club on this issue they will at least understand what the position of the support is.

The Huns have already started their lobbying through their unofficial daily tabloids, but that is the only advantage they have in this entire process. Their future is really not in their own hands Celtic obviously can’t openly solicit other clubs or attempt to sway public opinion on an issue that is still to happen.

For all we know, the club could be taking counter measures behind the scenes. The well-being of Scottish football is at stake, and this really is a defining moment in the future of our club as much as anything else.

  20. PFayr – Without doubt. There is no way the Aberdeen representative can put his hand up on a Yes vote and expect to stay at Pittodrie. They would be chased

  21. As someone who usually finds myself in complete agreement with your normally moderate and thoughtful stance on most matters related to this blog, I find myself in complete disagreement with your position re Celtic’s  response to the potential emergence of a “newco”  Rangers.

You appear to be forming a view purely on the commerciality of the situation.  Undoubtedly there is a financial premium to be had by the existence of the ongoing Glasgow rivalry both in terms of match revenue and TV benefits. However for me this is about so much more than money. This is about sporting integrity, the very foundation of any honest sporting endeavour.

If the HMRC action agains Rangers is successful and indeed a newco is formed seeking to replace like for like the current Rangers, then we have a situation where one party has actively operated outside of the rules and regulations governing business and the game. If Celtic accepted this for commercial reasons then as far as I’m concerned any integrity left in our game goes straight out of the window.

In the newco scenario I would much prefer to see a statement from Celtic to the effect that, under no circumstances could they support the adoption of Rangers’ league position by the new entity in the interests of the integrity of the game. The statement could acknowledge that there will be a very real financial impact, but the club asks that the supporters understand that we continue to cut our cloth accordingly. That would be a massive ask, and indeed may very well see a further diminishing of quality on and off the park. However as a Club we could metaphorically continue to look at ourselves in the shaving mirror.

I have watched Celtic for 40 years, and my memories will live with me forever. The biggest thrills of going to Celtic Park for me are :-

    – I’m going to a place my father took me

    – I am blessed and thankful that I can now take my sons.

    – I love the game.

    – The emotional connection I feel with the club and all that it always has and continues to stand for.

The memories of the first will never leave me.  The second and third I can get at Stirling Albion. The last disappears if we don’t make a stand.

I realise the above can be construed as a naive viewpoint and I’ll live with that. If football is not the one area of life were we can apply a romanticised view of what the world should/could be  where is?

Apologies as I have only dipped into the blog for a short while. If you do respond I’ll catch it later.

  22. As much as I dont want the huns to achieve 4-in-a-row.

I dont want them to have any excuses. I want us to overtake them without the 10 point deduction. I believe we can, and will do it.

McCoist has been very lucky so far, in the League. They rely on Jelavic way too much. I cannot believe the room he still gets by opposition, double up on him, mark him out the game, they have nothing.

As for the big tax case, that is going to rumble on for as long as the wee tax case that they have admitted. CW is a non-payer, thats it.

If the PLC do deal with the devil to the extent of OF collusion then the Celtic FC I knew and grew up supporting will be gone. You are correct that it is not he who owns the greatest share in the club who is Celtic but us the support. Unfortunately though he who owns the greatest share has the largest say with regards policy. If the current incumbents decide this is the best policy for the club I’ll be back when they have gone and more suitable people are running us.

  26. Last week Paul gave a link to STV article which stated …

That the decision to allow Phoenix club back into SPL was not 10 votes from 11 clubs but was the responsibility of the SPL board.

The FoD only need three votes eg Neil Doncaster, D Weir and S Brown ….and they’re back in.

    Quote from STV article

” The conditions for entry are set by the SPL board, and not the representatives from the remaining 11 member clubs. The board consists of Ralph Topping (SPL chairman), Neil Doncaster (SPL chief executive), Eric Riley (Celtic), Stephen Thompson (Dundee United), Derek Weir (Motherwell) and Steven Brown (St Johnstone). Topping has the casting vote in the event of a split decision. ”

  29. bamboo – they wouldn’t take over the points but entry conditions for a new member can be set with a vote. A motion could be proposed for the newco to start on -25 points for the next 3 years. Equally a motion could be proposed, and carried, that the newco starts with a random amount of points. Lets say for example the huns total at the moment minus 10
