Time on the bench gave Hooper space

1040

This season, Gary Hooper has looked well below form of last term; his touch, movement and goals record don’t match up, but he came off the bench on Thursday to score a truly excellent goal.  Controlling a difficult ball in the centre circle, with defenders in close attendance, he picked out Giorgios Samaras before sprinting past his markers and finishing.

The winner against Motherwell was less spectacular but required sharp movement and spatial awareness.

Footballers cannot always play through bad form, sometimes they need a break, even for an hour on the bench, to get a different perspective on how they and the team play.

Despite his return to form I would retain the same 4-2-3-1 formation against Inverness next time out.

How did rangers cheating and perishing as cheats at the hands of cheating suddenly become a Celtic problem?

These scumbags know how to cheat and drive a wedge between good Celtic men.

    A curse on them.

  2. The Battered Bunnet on

Aberdeen were carrying £13M of debt last time I looked, serviced from a turnover of only £7M.

They have permission to build a new 21,000 seater stadium, at a estimated (by me @£2K per seat) cost of £42M.

Their average attendance last year was 10,461.

    Stewart Milne ain’t no turkey.

  3. Actually how could Rangers Newco FC accept a 10 point penalty when they didn’t generate the points in the first place?

Was that not Rangers Taxcheats FC who generated those points?

If the first club goes belly up as it can’t pay the debt to HMRC can’t HMRC try and apply the £49 million debt to Rangers Newco as they are playing in the same league using the old clubs ground and players and points total?

When it comes to that would HMRC even give them a VAT number as they are quite obviously a phoenix company recognised by everyone from the fawning press to their peers in the SPL?

Are the laptop loyal etc being naive in their belief that it would all be as simple as cornflakes?

  6. Well as Administration means they would not be allowed to profit from selling anyone in the Jan window I believe that is CW’s short term target.

If he keeps them going til then they will sell, Jelavic has to be the one they offload. As the rest are mediocre at best.

  8. If Phil is correct then I would bet they will win the next several titles. Even if he is not, can Celtic stop the inevitable. At the end of the day no other SPL club will vote for the demise of RFC, if they go under then the other clubs lose a huge slice of their gate money, TV money and potential transfer money for selling on a good player.

If we take the correct stance, is our one vote (or abstention) enough to scupper their resurrection?

From everything that has happened throughout their past and recent history, I know that they will come out of this armageddon-like scenario in one piece. It has always been so.

I take your point m8 but didn’t murderwell get off relatively easily when their club went into admin

Im not sure if they eventually paid their creditors or just did what many companies across UK do on a daily basis ( Fold and don’t pay debt)

If the huns punishment was the same as murderwell, then it would be very survivable for them

For example well didn’t need to become well newco or anything like that

  10. Lennon n Mc....Mjallby on

I don’t u.understand the idea that the league will be less interesting without the huns, even for our games against them, the interest would rocket with all new contenders, the spl would be such a curiosity that it would compensate.

Don’t necessarily disagree, it just isn’t comfortable, but the board most definitley need to know the strength of feeling.

Rangers demise..for some time now we have been told by parts[all?] of the media, all and sundry and most recently ole Geoff Brown that should the Rangers be demoted to a lesser division or maybe even cease to exist our land will be plunged into darkness and all life here will cease to exist,or words to that effect, you all know what I mean,it will be THE game changing moment in all our lives…supposedly.

Oh really? I dont think so.

What is the real loss financially to the SPL? [my take on it-I am sure others will be much more exact in their figures].I believe that each SPL.club would suffer a loss of circa £200k,or indeed less which equates to the loss of two visits to their stadiums per annum within the SPL fixure list. Will the loss of £200k be the tipping point for all these clubs to go belly up too?…mmmmmmmmm?

Overall therefore the total SPL loss would be circa £2m? which poses some questions..would the current SNP government allow the SPL to fold for the sake of £2m?..TBB noted @14.33 that the proceeds of crime confiscated will shortly total £49m ,monies requiring to be put to good use somewhere, save jobs, youth development etc,so why not allocate £2-£3m to the SPL[minus RFC} to plug the hole left by the non visits of the horribles, also a potential vote winner for Salmond and Co too as they come to the rescue of the our national football league.

Or a new SPLco sponsor appears? BETDAQ? in for £1m or £2m to match the government money and ensure Celtic FC have a league to play in,also supporting CFC’s major shareholders interests and indeed ensuring further coverage and potentially more business for his online betting brand.

But what about the TV deal? well it was signed off in 2009 for the next five years, therefore due for renewaI in 2014[which might be a very significant date!] I would doubt within the small print of that deal that there are clauses that state which teams have to stay in the SPL for the deal to stand, how could they foresee who is relegated for example?.I suppose assumptions would have been made that Celtic and Rangers would always be in the SPL..therefore as far as I could summise the TV deal would stand,so no loss there then.

If Rangersnewco were demoted say to Division 3 then with a core support behind them and leaner they could arrive back in the SPL in say 3-4 years just as the TV deal is due for renewal which just might excite the TV suppliers to renew at the same level or indeed more.

I have not factored in any increase in attendances or better league postions and financial rewards for same for the other remaining SPL clubs.

So will we really all be plunged into darkness at the demise of the southsiders? ….Dont think so!

  15. Right, that`s it. My email has been dispatched to Celtic informing them of the action I will be taking should Celtic plc support any action intended to help a guilty Rangers escape due punishment. I recommend all who feel equally strongly do the same,

  16. Who got the most out of the cheating ? The huns -thats their supporters. So all huns should be taxed at a higher rate than the rest of us for as many years as it takes to recover the cheated money.

  17. There’s an awful lot to happen before we get to a new company applying for membership of the spl. It does no harm to set our position out early of course – and I’m firmly in the camp that the league, indeed the world, would be a better place without then. In any form. Old or new.

A vote is NOT the only weapon we have here. Don’t think that it’s going to be a vote that decides this. It’s not.

Ever read Sun Tzu? War’s are moral contests, won before they’re ever fought.

As a moral contest, this is Game Over. A rich, powerful institution has dodged its commitments to the state, to the taxpayer, and is seeking to flaunt even more rules, using the threat of financial penalties to those who don’t acquiese to its demands, as a means to leverege themselves into an even stronger position.

We need to frame the debate just like that, and the best of it is we don’t need to fudge it or spin it … just tell it like it is.

This will be done by politics. That vote will be decided before anyone even walks into the room, and the argument – the sole argument – Rangers have in their favour is that Scottish football needs its two biggest clubs if it’s to survive.

Our first line of argument should be that it’s not true, and even if it was, Rangers will still exist, albiet they’ll have to claw their way up from the bottom tier of the game’s structure.

Our second line of argument is the sporting integrity case we made so brilliantly in light of Rangers efforts to get a second league extension in the 3-in-a-row year.

Our third line of argument is the business integrity argument … and we will have a lot of support on that one, including from the banks, sponsors, local business … all the small creditors you never hear about in this debate.

And finally, if worst comes to worst and they want to ignore all that, we go back to their whole reason for being there. That the game needs its two biggest teams to survive.

That’s when we flip open the SIOP nuclear playbook and start thumbing through the Major Attack Options; everything from handing in our notice to withdrawing from individual cup competitions or vetoing the next ten TV deals.

Just read your latest Phil and for once I hope you’ve got your wires crossed somewhere. This bombshell decision by our board, if it were to happen, would actually leave US as the club in crisis. The ramifications of it all would be mindboggling, starting with mass protest, possible boycotts, season books tossed and general upheaval. Have they thought this through? Its not just any club who has flaunted the laws. Its a club who would gladly see us perish, and party forever on the back of it. Its a club who have won leagues, gained entry to the CL and gathered millions of pounds in the process. All at our expense. And our board (if true) think its right to agree to helping save them from their just deserts? Its actually too far fetched, or is it?

I wont set foot in Celtic Park again if my club becomes part of any such collaboration process.

Paulus LXVII, Salve salve;- Interesting, very interesting I have no contacts and no information to go on apart from what I receive from this excellent and other not so excellent bloggs. For me the outcome the board want is for every other club left in the division to vote yea and us to note nay. Then Peter the bonus eater can say ,”sorry ghuys we tried our best now we have to get on with it”. If this is not the case then it will be bourne out by Celtic recoursing to a strategy with its roots based on the excellent Hogan Rogan Brogan and Trevino’s summation of events which would place the SFA and SPL in a very invidious predicament and would surely make it impossible for a new thems to walk straight in the door.

As I said before peoples pay very close attention to what is happening with FC Sion, a victory for them (which is looking exceedingly likely btw) opens the door on a lot of possiblilities to which I would like to think Our leaders would not be blind.

To sum up, It is difficult to decide which will be the more fascinating, the demise of our southside neighbours or the alacrity with which our board will pursue new and radical strategies in order to see us enter new markets and leagues.

  28. The Battered Bunnet on

From what I can see – most figures to year end 2010 – only St Johnstone and St Mirren in the SPL are debt free, while Mothwell and Celtic have around £500K of debt.

That’s the best of it (although I haven’t seen ICT’s or Dunfermline’s figures)

Hibs’ trading position relies on player sales, they have recently built a new stand, and have about £6M of debt on £7M income.

Dundee Utd and Hearts are technically insolvent while Kilmarnock are in the same bonkers position as Aberdeen with debt double income.

Everyone else pretty has debt of around 100% of income, except Rangers whose position is hopeless.

The SPL is a failure. Commercially and in sporting terms.

If Rangers are permitted to parachute back into the SPL, we should simply walk back to the SFL and start a proper league for proper football clubs.

Let the SPL go down with those who would cling to Rangers’ flotsam. They would all deserve each other.

  29. johann murdoch says:

    8 November, 2011 at 15:15

As chairman of a smaller club in the SPL, their demise could be looked upon in two ways.

The media led ‘we’re all doomed’ scenario which will gather pace in the coming months, or an opportunity to change Scottish football for the greater good of the game.

By demoting them to the 3rd division, league reconstruction would shoot to the top of the agenda, 4 divisions would become 3 (or even 2) to minimise the years they are out of the top flight. Financial fairplay would become enshrined in the new league set up as would greater distribution of wealth. Fans would return to the game if they get their leagues of 16 or 18 (everyone plays each other twice) and if there is a more competitive league.

The TV money is a bogus arguement as I believe the SPL are already resigned to fact that the next deal offerred will be significantly less than the current one (like the English Football League’s recent deal). That is why they are looking at SPL TV again.

The demise of them could be a perfect opportunity for a cleansing of all that is wrong with Scottish football and a much needed fresh start. But do the chairmen of the smaller teams have the foresight, and more importantly bottle, to vote according should the question be asked?

  30. Have a feeling The Calton Celtic / St Mary’s Celtic are about to be born.

with no particular reference to Phil’s latest blog, the anti board reaction seems to get stronger and more difficult to bottle each time a new announcement is made (even if it’s just the announcement of a rumour)

I get the feeling a GB Celtic / newco Celtic is were we’re possibly headed no matter the outcome of the filths numerous court cases and crippling financial situation.

There is no love there. it took no time at all for PL to fall from being the “SSM” to now being “he who gets too much of a bonus, no wonder his suits are sharp”, DD is the absentee landlord owner / non owner / biggest shareholder, and no one is actually too sure why John Reid was ever put in place except it upset alot of fans and then he left again.

A feeling is building, and with a support which has already been proven to be quite organised when it wants to, a movement could mobilise and go on the march to either remove the stewards, or remove the support from them. This is all my opinion of course. Maybe I’m missreading the depth of feeling, and we haven’t dropped about 15,000 SB in 2 years. That’s more than almost all other clubs have as season ticket holders.

The board in place will do what’s best for shareholders. Fans play no part in that.

Doing the best for shareholders does not mean doing what the shareholders are demanding you do, but means not putting the financial well being of the business in jeopardy. Paul67’s line of being prepared to lose whatever part of the club whcih depends on Rankers, will not play a part, as to do so will possibly jeopardise the financial well being of the club (whether we wnat them to or not).

The decisions the board must take to ensure they fulfil their role to shareholders, both as a job and legally, means they will conflict with the wishes of the ordinary fan.

    The solution?

to me, the fans do it themselves from the start.
