Time to call Fifa to account

819

The Fifa Executive Committee meet in Zurich today and tomorrow but it is unclear if the allegations of corruption concerning the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar will be on the agenda.  The world body are no strangers to allegations of corruption, it seems to be an internal part of the fabric of the game at the top level, they are also extremely experienced at stonewalling such allegations.

The International Trades Union Congress, who are calling for the 2022 vote to be re-run, have called for fans attending games this weekend to turn their back on the field at the 22nd minute, to build awareness of what is going on with Fifa and the Qatari preparations.

When you get corruption at the top of an organisation it tends to undermine process all the way down.  A clean and alert Fifa would give us a far better game.  It’s time we were all asking questions about this.

Congratulations to Mrs Jobo Balde, who won at £50 voucher to spend at Cail Bruich, 725 Great Western Road.  Jobo, drop me and email……….

Seville, The Celtic Movement, is selling like the proverbial……

“I decided to go to the train station only to be told that there were no more trains to Malaga that night and so I was now truly stranded. By chance I met an old man who asked me if I knew where the train station was. “It’s no good mate they are all off—all the trains have gone!”

“The old man laughed and explained that he wasn’t looking to get a train, but just needed to find the station as that is where he had parked his car while he and his wife went to the game.

“We spoke for a few minutes about what had happened to me and then he said if I could get him to the station he would drive me to Malaga as they were staying twenty minutes outside Malaga for the rest of the week!

“I was delighted and accepted the lift and we got to the airport just as the last call went out for my flight. I rushed on board and guess who was there? None other than my mate Jim. I owe that old man and his wife so much for their help.”

I agree that the huge screen at Celtic Park will be fantastic at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

After the ceremony, can I impose on you and Jessica to assist me in carrying it to Strathclyde Park for the triathlon?

That’s the only event I’ve tickets to attend and a 100m screen will enhance the occasion.

Today’s lead article is admirable, for obvious reasons, but, as others have said, our immediate problems lie closer to home.

There can be no doubt now that football is corrupt, from FIFA down to National Associations, via the issuing of sponsorships and other corporate avenues.

The question is, what can be done about it?

Unless, universally, people stopped going to games, or subscribing to television companies…….then, nothing can be done.

What we are presently watching, is not competitive football, either at European level or National level.

The game is skewed, because of money and, in Scotland, “social” reasons.

    So, what are we watching?

We are watching exhibition stuff, where rules are bent and broken to suit a prevailing agenda.

Many fans have drifted away and many more will in the near future.

Many Celtic fans have stated that they will still turn up at Celtic Park to see the team, because, of course, they are Celtic fans.

However, does that not mean that to so do means that we are complicit and condone the corruption in the Game?

Does the Game itself matter or is being a Celtic fan enough?

If so, then could Celtic not then diversify and become another sporting club, free of the corruption of the SFA, EUFA and FIFA?

During the Flag dispute, Bob Kelly threatened to withdraw Celtic from the league and form a GAA club.

Would that be acceptable to modern day fans i.e., it would still be Celtic, but under the auspices of the GAA and not the SFA?

Rant over, but finally, I would just like to say how much I am looking forward to my visit to Parkhead on Saturday with my big brother and Grandson.

I know that I am being complicit in the scam, but, what the hell!

My mantra, since the balloon went up in Scotland, is/was that Celtic have two honourable option.

    1) the Belfast Celtic route of shutting the shop.

    2) the Derry City option of moving to another league.

Obviously, No.1 is a non starter and No.2 would require a lot of shifting of attitudes.

  15. ….. back again. Preview of the final five fourth round matches in the Libertadores tonight (ko times are UK time).

    20:30 Atlético-PR (Bra) v Universitario (Per)

Dunno why this game kicks off at the absurdly early time of 17:30 (local time), but it is.

Anyway, Atletico manager, Miguel Angel Portugal surprised a few by playing three up front to secure last week’s 1-0 away win in Peru. Now their focus is to get six points (tonight and against Velez next week) from their two remaining home games. “O Furacão” have a few out for this one, particularly Adriano, but I don’t think that’ll affect them as he upsets the balance of the team when he plays (which is not that often).

With no points/goals, so far in the Libertadores, Universitario are a team in disarray. This means that their only alternative tonight, is to come out and chase this game and that will leave space for Paranã to exploit.

    Perdiction : HOME WIN (85%)

22:45 Lanús (Arg) v Dep Cali (Col)

Lanus are another team in the last chance saloon to.

They will be without keeper, Marchesin who was red carded in last week’s 2-1 defeat in Cali. He’ll be replaced by 20yr old, relative novice, Andrada. Lanús are doing well in the national tournament just now and have a big cup match against River this Sunday. Consequently, they may not be too upset if they don’t get anything from this.

Dep Cali are also without first choice keeper Jose Silva who is out with damaged knee ligaments. However, his replacement is experienced, 42yr old, Faryd Mondragon. Paper’s saying that manager, Hector Cardenas will employ a 4-5-1 set up to pack the midfield and take advantage of any counter attacks. If that’s the case central mid, Andres Peres will be a key man in this game.

Overall, I think that Cali will be hopeful of a point from this one.

Prediction : (a don’t bet on it) DRAW.

    22:45 Cerro Porteño (Par) v O’Higgins (Chi)

Cerro’s experienced defender Carlos Bonet promised that “assisted by our home crowd we will play a higher tempo game and bring the game to the Chileans in this one”. Cerro have a derby coming up at the weekend (against Olimpia).

Pressure starting to mount on O’Higgins domestically (they face Colo Colo in a six pointer this weekend). That, and their inability to (regularly) score, must be a worry here.

    Perdiction : HOME WIN (70%)

01:00 Cruzeiro (Bra) v Defensor (Urg)

Cruzeiro have had terrible away form this year in this competition and have brought in midfielder Lucas Silva to help link up their attack play. Having watched them a few times now, I’d say that last year’s POTY Everton is definitely overshadowed by his left sided counterpart Dagoberto, who looks (and plays) a bit like a younger Kris Commons. Maybe? No?

    Dagoberto. A young Kris Commons?

Cruzeiro languish in third place with three points in their group so a home win tonight is crucial. Sources (ie. ma wee jaikey “Raposo” supporting mate) saying they are likely to play and “almost 4-2-4” with Lucas Silva and Nílton playing the Murdoch and Auld positions.

Defensor are without defender, Arias (suspended ) and midfielder, Pais ( injured) for this one and also have a local derby match against Danubio, Sunday. Regardless of how they perform, it’ll be worth it just to see 19 yr old box to box midfielder, Giorgian de Arrabeceatta again – remember where you heard it first.

    Prediction : HOME WIN (75%)

    01:00 Unión Española(Chi) v San Lorenzo (Arg)

Union will be looking for big things from Sebastián Jaime who caused nothing but trouble for the Lanus defence last week (he came on as a sub) and strike partner Gustavo Canales here.

Lorenzo manager, Bauza, trying to play down the importance of this match, but without attacking midfield duo of Piatti and Romagnoli, must have concerns about containing a Chilean team who felt they were better than last week’s draw suggests. Argentinian paper suggesting SL will play a 3-4-1-2.

    Prediction : HOME WIN (60%)
