Time to call Fifa to account

819

The Fifa Executive Committee meet in Zurich today and tomorrow but it is unclear if the allegations of corruption concerning the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar will be on the agenda.  The world body are no strangers to allegations of corruption, it seems to be an internal part of the fabric of the game at the top level, they are also extremely experienced at stonewalling such allegations.

The International Trades Union Congress, who are calling for the 2022 vote to be re-run, have called for fans attending games this weekend to turn their back on the field at the 22nd minute, to build awareness of what is going on with Fifa and the Qatari preparations.

When you get corruption at the top of an organisation it tends to undermine process all the way down.  A clean and alert Fifa would give us a far better game.  It’s time we were all asking questions about this.

Congratulations to Mrs Jobo Balde, who won at £50 voucher to spend at Cail Bruich, 725 Great Western Road.  Jobo, drop me and email……….

Photos are in from CQteN, great work by Geo, as usual. Click on the photo to see hi-res. More to come:

Seville, The Celtic Movement, is selling like the proverbial……

“I decided to go to the train station only to be told that there were no more trains to Malaga that night and so I was now truly stranded. By chance I met an old man who asked me if I knew where the train station was. “It’s no good mate they are all off—all the trains have gone!”

“The old man laughed and explained that he wasn’t looking to get a train, but just needed to find the station as that is where he had parked his car while he and his wife went to the game.

“We spoke for a few minutes about what had happened to me and then he said if I could get him to the station he would drive me to Malaga as they were staying twenty minutes outside Malaga for the rest of the week!

“I was delighted and accepted the lift and we got to the airport just as the last call went out for my flight. I rushed on board and guess who was there? None other than my mate Jim. I owe that old man and his wife so much for their help.”

It’s hard to predict but Ajax were pumped 6-1 in the next round.

I also think big fras wouldn’t have his record if we had a longer euro run.

Corruption became part of football the first time a supposed amateur discovered a ten bob note in his boot. So we have about a hundred and fifty years of cleaning up at all levels of the game to undertake.

We should never forget the direct input of CO to the skewing of football to the advantage of the Man. Us, Reals and Barcelonas of the game.

In the 1990, it was his blueprint (pardon the pun) that was used when the European Cup was changed from an all in the hat knockout formula to sections. This was in order to protect the big clubs, THEY considered themselves to be in that category, from being knocked out of the tournament in the early rounds by minnows.

It also guaranteed the ‘bigger clubs’ a minimum number of European games per season, and virtually guaranteed that no side from a smaller league would ever again win the trophy.

The trophy itself became the Champions League and attracted, for the chosen few, shedloads of money.

This has led to a predictability, that for me at least, unless Celtic was involved, I would not be bothered watching it for free.

When we moan about the present situation, never forget who was primarily responsible for bringing it about.

A good point re tapping up.

I never thought of that. I was too busy thinking about why it was worthy of inclusion on the national news to tell us that Sleekit has spoken to two players even though, they went on to tell us, he doesn`t know if he`ll be able to sign them!!

Why doesn`t Neil give Ronaldo a ring……even if he doesn`t know if we can afford to sign him!!! Scottish media, eh!

On the subject of corruption in FIFA, Sepp Blatter, just turned 78, succeeded João Havelange who was President for 24 years until the age of 82. Blatter was elected as President of FIFA on 8 June 1998, and has been reelected in 2002, 2007 and 2011.

I think therein lies the problem – even the President of the USA only serves 2 x 4 year terms.Once elected, they are basically in for life and can behave like dictators – beyond reproach and challenge.Everyone is too afraid of their cushy jobs and perks. Blatter’s salary is reputed to be ‘several million dollars per annum’ with big ‘profit related’ elements.

Perhaps the way to right this stinking ship is for a real election, with a candidate running against Blatter (his age is surely against him now) who will pledge to limit the number of years the FIFA President can hold office and therefore greatly lessen the chances of another dictatorship scenario.

I was asking for info on a golf outing , and was told you were the man to ask

    —————————————————

if you’re meaning the annual CQN golf open at Aberdour I haven’t seen anything about this yet and I believe that over the years the date has varied between June – August. I’ve only made the cut for the last 2. Making the half cut later in the day ;-)

On a more general level there have been a few CQN outings arranged where generally around 15 – 20 players play. Again, haven’t seen or heard any announcements regarding outings for this year so watch this space. Used to be organised by BJMac and more latterly by Ryan or Frank O’Donnell but seldom see any of these fine gentleman posting regularly anymore. Which is unfortunate.

Maybe if they’re lurking some more definite information will follow….

  21. marspapa –

hope ACGR doesn’t mind me chipping in here ;-)

Last 2 years the cost has been about £60 I think. That’s for the golf, some on course refreshments and the evening meal with guest speaker. The same amount again gets you bed and breakfast in one of the Aberdour hotels (or several breakfasts if you’re acgr).

No handicap limit as far as I know. If there was I wouldn’t have been allowed!

    Evening all,

Doc, I have sent a text to Pat Kerr. He is in the photo the guy with the short sleeve polo on.

Can’t believe I made the front page on CQN again!!!! Although it only proves am no as thin as I thought I was lol.

Nice and relaxing in sunny Fuerteventura and thoroughly enjoying reading (halfway through) the Seville book pure magic so it is.

Sftb brilliant chapter never knew 11 seconds could last soooo long. What can you say about BRTH,what a wordsmith, eyes have misted over several times already.

Lionsroar at 70? Tell you what a very nifty 5s player for his age.

I know when the golf date is! It’s not for me to tell. C’mon Taggsybhoy the suspension is killing everybody.

As somebody says on here adios from way down South
