Time to pair Lustig and VVD in central defence

2168

This afternoon’s friendly against Tottenham Hotspur gives Ronny Deila a dilemma.  Last weekend he played a second string against St Pauli, but with things going so wrong in Warsaw on Wednesday, the pressure is on to pull a game plan together which will work at Murrayfield.

Our other concern is that the squad, without Ambrose, Brown and Forrest, is already looking threadbare.  We simply can’t afford an injury to afflict Commons, Griffiths, Stokes, Johansen, van Dijk, Matthews, Lustig or Izaguirre.

The suggestion was put to me this week that we should play Lustig with van Dijk in central defence on Wednesday.  Lustig can play there, but would Ronny trust them on such an important occasion without a warm-up game?

If I was taking a risk with first-team players this afternoon it would be to pair these two.  If we’re going to get the required result on Wednesday the most important area of the team to get right is the defence.

A CEO should make sure all transfer money received is reinvested in the team

    ——–

    Nonsense.

Can you name me one Scottish club CEO who would do this?

Or any club outside of the debt-belt of the EPL?

A fine post and one which I thought might help educate Kev J on how to express himself in a less juvenile fashion. His posts since have shown that that is not the case but yours remains a thought-provoking , well expressed and interesting piece. Well done.

  3. Whether you think PL is overpaid or not, I would suspect that DD didn’t get very rich by paying staff over the odds..

The reason Neil and / or the bored have not selected your players are noted below

Jr – a runner no better than current lot

Gms – injury prone , lightweight

    Stevie May – no

You clearly have no clue re the relative merits of the above.

So to sum up when the club do well it is fans / players take the credit , when we do badly it is the boards fault.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has waived part of his bonus entitlement because of the club’s disappointing results on the park last season and the difficult economic situation.

Celtic’s newly published annual report reveals that Mr Lawwell gave up his right to £38,071 of a £190,359 bonus for the last financial year to June 30.

As well as waiving his entitlement to this part of his bonus completely, the annual report shows that Mr Lawwell, in another voluntary move, deferred payment of the remaining £152,288 to a “future, as yet unspecified date”.

Including this £152,288 bonus, which Mr Lawwell will receive at some stage, the chief executive enjoyed a rise in his total remuneration for the year to June 30 to £753,193 from £738,987 in the prior 12 months.

This is short of the £1 million-plus package he was rumoured to be in line for if he had taken the post of chief executive of Arsenal in 2008.

The Herald reported last month that Rangers chief executive Martin Bain had received a £165,000, or 35% rise, in his remuneration to £633,000 in the year to June 30.

Celtic failed last season to progress beyond the group stages of the second-tier Europa League. Old Firm rivals Rangers had the Clydesdale Bank Premier League won well before the end of the season.

Celtic, meanwhile, lost to Hearts in the quarter-final of the Co-operative Insurance Cup and exited the Scottish Cup at the semi-final stage with defeat by Ross County.

A source close to Celtic emphasised that Mr Lawwell’s decision to give up part of his bonus and defer the remainder had been made voluntarily.

The source told The Herald: “After last season, and the disappointing performances on the field, complete with the current economic situation, he didn’t feel it was right to take a bonus this year.

“He is very sensitive because he is a Celtic fan and … has very good relationships with the supporters’ clubs and the supporters because he is one of them. He has real sensitivity to the fans’ views, opinions, and feelings. He just wanted to make sure he was doing the right thing. He has shown a degree of leadership there.”

Mr Lawwell, as well as the bonus that he is deferring, received a basic salary of £507,625, benefits in kind of £17,136 and pension contributions of £76,144.

Celtic’s accounts show that the remuneration of its chairman, John Reid, was unchanged at £50,000 in the year to June 30. The total remuneration of finance director Eric Riley slipped from £230,940 to £222,765.

Celtic slipped to a pre-tax loss of £2.13 million in the year to June 30 from a £2m profit before tax in the prior 12 months, as revenues slid from £72.6m to £61.7m. Profit from trading, before asset transactions and exceptional items, fell from £11.2m to £4.46m.

The annual report reiterates Mr Lawwell’s entitlement to an “additional loyalty award”, payable at the end of the current financial year to next June “if he remains employed by the company throughout the period”. He has been with Celtic since 2003, and has overseen a generally strong financial performance.

The report states the amount of the loyalty payment depends on performance under Celtic’s Long-Term Incentive Plan. It adds the aggregate of payments due under the LTIP and loyalty award “cannot exceed £650,000”. Mr Lawwell’s “total LTIP interest” stood at £300,000 at June 30.

“The debt did increase, but not all because of Mon”

Let’s examine that for a moment.

Year end debt at Celtic at June 2000, the end of the Barnes regime and the start of MON’s, was £14.5M

At the end of 2001, MON’s first year in charge, it had risen to £29.6M

In July 2001 we raised £22.5M cash in a share issue. Despite that, at June 2002 year end bank debt was £16.4M, reflecting a £9M shortfall in cash to cover costs that year.

In 2003, Seville, we enjoyed record turnover, and lost £6M, with bank debt increasing to £17.7M.

In 2004, we again increased turnover, knocked Barca out of the UEFA Cup en route to the quarter final, lost £7.5M along the way and bank debt reduced to £15.8M

In 2005, not our finest season… we lost £7.7M, and debt rose to £19.5M.

In all MON’s period in charge required £27.5M cash more than was generated, being the closing 2005 debt of £19.5M, minus the starting figure at 2000 of £14.5M plus the £22.5M share issue.

    Hope that’s helpful.

Your Fantasy League is a noble gesture, bud. The £175 cash from your own pocket is a rarity even on a site which is known for wonderful acts.

Does the team entered have room for a CEO?

    If not,why not?

Because from the example of Celtic and judging by the wages earned,it’s the most important position in the team!

I think we could find better value elsewhere,in keeping with the ethos of that competition.

Having said that,I just don’t like him so my opinion is somewhat skewed….

you’re getting confused between share issues and periods of time.

The ground was completed in 1998, 2 years before MON came to the club. There were no ‘ongoing stadium costs’ of any note.

    My numbers are pretty reliable.

It ought to be pointed out though that these numbers relate to an entirely different football environment to the present day. Inflation in the game generally since 2000 has been in the order of 100%. In other words, a MON type 5 year project would cost double the £27.5M overspent in his tenure.

    Hope that’s helpful too.

He hung himself with that line.

Some folks think it means if we sell a player for £6M it means we must buy a player at £6M. They don’t see that signing a £4M player at £10k/week for 4 years is reinvesting the money in the team. To complicate matters the wages saved on player one might be used to give player 2 a bigger wage, or used on some other aspect that supports the team.

All depends on the interpretation of the line.

The statement fro PL was – to the best if my recollection- that every Lenny co I in would be reinvested. Nothi specifically about the team

Lenny spent about whe, £7m last summer? Most if it badly.

To get back to where we started, your contention was that the role of the CEO is to make sure every penny brought in is spent again on players, regardless of other circumstances.

I can’t see the logic in that at all.

Can’t see us agreeing on this, so best leave it there?

Have a good day (or night)!

  22. Kevj – (and others) I inhabit a strange inner world of being thoroughly disillusioned with the great institutions I once held dear. Celtic are a huge part of me but I refuse to let it get me down. Plenty other dare I say more important organisations do that to us on a daily basis.

I see a club that is in need of continuing improvement and I have my own political/social/economic views on what that should be. Not party political but as something that binds community more so than it already does. Individualism and the me first culture encouraged by the Iron Lady (rust in pieces) may well be at the heart of some of our issues. But the collectivism is still there in spades and groups like the celtic support are an awesome thing when they act as one. That is why football fansite have been criminalised or sanitised.

I digress – I want change but the fact remains that even with change we might still get chappy results from timE to time.
