Time to postpone Euros and prepare for domestic consequences

463

The next two rounds of games in La Liga have been suspended as the effects of the coronavirus grow in Spain.  Seven Bundesliga games will take place behind closed doors this weekend, as will all games in Ligue 1, while pretty much everything in Italy is shutdown.

This leaves England the only one of the big five leagues going ahead in front of full stadiums.  Infection rates in Italy, France, Spain and Germany are significantly higher than the UK, but it seems inevitable that public attendance at sporting events in the UK will be stopped within days.

As more players become infected, it will be impossible, and hazardous to players, to continue with football matches.  Uefa must accept that the Euros should be postponed, you cannot have tens of thousands travelling across the continent, then home again.  This competition is a crucial earner for Uefa and national associations; it will be a commercial washout if held this year.  Better on all counts to re-schedule for 2021.

Domestic competitions, as well as the Champions and Europa Leagues, should be allowed to run into June – all behind closed doors.

When coronavirus appears in new cases those involved have often travelled through airports. A random Italian person brings it to Kenya now. What were the chances?

Ok its rampant in Italy but still with a population of 60.5m and a few thousand have coronavirus….either it survives a long time on airports and planes or else a LOT more people have it than we know…

Boruc one of five Bournemouth staff self-isolating

Bournemouth goalkeeper Artur Boruc is one of five Cherries employees currently self-isolating.

The other four people are members of the club’s first-team staff.

Bournemouth say the move is a precaution and neither Boruc nor the staff members have tested positive for coronavirus.

It’s looking more likely that the season both here and abroad will not be played out (even behind closed doors). I’m not sure what that means. We have played just under 80% of games this season, so do they award the league to us and relegate Hearts (who will still be bottom following the weekend fixtures, regardless of results), do they try and suspend the season for a month in order to try and get this under control, do they declare it null and void? I assume most leagues will end up following the same course.

  7. RIP wee Jinky, Celtic’s No 7 and greatest player. I stood on the terraces home and away and watched your magic.

God bless you for the courage you displayed when suffering that most awful of diseases MND. Also, I believe, the first person to have a Fabergé egg created in their honour whilst still alive. A true legend.🍀🍀🍀🏆🍀🍀🍀

Its difficult though when some leagues there is a clear favourite and others are very close such as Spanish and German top flights.

The outcome of discussions may be that it is left up to national organisations…

But – some interesting ideas out there…

‘More from Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony who has been voicing ideas of how football could cope with the rest of the season being suspended.

It’s 10 games we talking about. Get rid of league cup & EFL cup for 1 season to allow this season to finish into next one if necessary. Having that mid week space will allow catch up https://twitter.com/_munch/status/1238393580970029056

If one player tests positive for the virus it will result in postponements. Is it not best during this period to get all the players together (infected and uninfected) and let them all pick it up in one fail swoop? Obviously all players would then have to self isolate etc.

Otherwise, we will have players picking up the virus piecemeal for months on end. Will a postponement be required on each occasion? Remember, training facilities etc are all closed too.

  10. Siempre Celtic (formerly Traditionalist88) on

The big assumption there is that it is 10 games we are talking about – what if its more and we go on into next season trying to contain this… the line will have to be drawn somewhere or you end up playing for 2020 titles into 2021 or beyond!

    Just maybe

-They may, using a dif form of those highly 1informative posts you had on maths may be recaliberated to calculate when they feel the virus will peak and hit, based on the numbers they know to date.(emdi in Actuary on :-)

They can only run various simulations numberswise about when it’ll hit.based on what numbers say.i would say most aren’t clued bout that.

We then have the virus itself-the how,the why,the what, how and when- we aren’t clued bout that.

Then we approach us and how we react, based on our level of knowledge and how we percieve it.etc

  15. All Uefa competitions, including Champions League and Europa League matches due to be played on 17 and 18 March, have been postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The draws for the next rounds, set for 20 March, have also been postponed.

  24. Respiratory specialist now saying you should wash your face at the same time as your hands and also use a soapy finger to clean out both nostrils. Common sense approach.

Also use antiseptic mouthwash a couple of times a day. Cue panic buying of antiseptic mouthwash. My suggestion would be alcohol free and probably Corsodyl Daily if you can get it. No, I don’t have shares.

“And since you may well have been exposed anyhow, remove any coronavirus already around your nose and throat: Wash your hands and face well with soap and warm water, including — on a finger — a quarter-inch into each nostril. Then gently blow your nose. DON’T use those irrigating devices, like neti pots, that might force virus further inside! Brush your teeth and tongue, swish and spit, and gargle once or twice with an antiseptic mouthwash.”

  25. It certainly looks idd that football all across England and indeed Europe is closing down but as you were in Scotland.

I hope the uncertainty hasn’t affected our players too much. We’ll need to be at our best on Sunday, they’ll throw absolutely everything into their cup final.

  26. So spare day now a available next week. The huns and St Johnstone should be told they need to complete their outstanding fixture midweek, taking care of the fabled “game in hand.” This fixture should be played behind closed doors. If season is suspended all teams have played the same amount of games and team at the top is declared winner of this season’s league if no further games can be played.

‘There is a determination to complete the season’

    Dan Roan

    BBC Sports editor

This action goes against the government’s highly controversial advice to continue staging sports events despite mass gatherings being closed or cancelled across the world.

But, DCMS officials are known to be supportive of the decision football authorities have taken given the need to protect employees, and the mounting cases of players contracting the virus.

The problem is that the outbreak is expected to be at its peak in May and June so if the suspension keeps on being extended, some clubs may start to push for the season to be declared void, a nightmare scenario for clubs like Liverpool and Leeds Utd, who both stand on the brink of long-awaited glory.

But as it stands, there seems to be a determination to complete the season if at all possible.
