Time to postpone Euros and prepare for domestic consequences

463

The next two rounds of games in La Liga have been suspended as the effects of the coronavirus grow in Spain.  Seven Bundesliga games will take place behind closed doors this weekend, as will all games in Ligue 1, while pretty much everything in Italy is shutdown.

This leaves England the only one of the big five leagues going ahead in front of full stadiums.  Infection rates in Italy, France, Spain and Germany are significantly higher than the UK, but it seems inevitable that public attendance at sporting events in the UK will be stopped within days.

As more players become infected, it will be impossible, and hazardous to players, to continue with football matches.  Uefa must accept that the Euros should be postponed, you cannot have tens of thousands travelling across the continent, then home again.  This competition is a crucial earner for Uefa and national associations; it will be a commercial washout if held this year.  Better on all counts to re-schedule for 2021.

Domestic competitions, as well as the Champions and Europa Leagues, should be allowed to run into June – all behind closed doors.

  1. To deploying the high press it takes everyone to be on the same page, working together in unison and busting your balls for each other and sticking to the game plan

I didn’t see tonight’s game, but havin seen their recent performances I’m not sure that’s game plan would be effective

    B-)

  2. Well done to Ragers completing tonight’s Europa League match, considering their wealth problem.

  3. It was a half bottle of Buckie, empty. The wee guy picked it up and made a great show of emptying it out in front of them.So that’s a banned song charge, and a bottle thrown charge against them now.

PetetheBeat Good point about ambient temperatures. From what I can gather, the virus can’t survive in the open at about 27C. So yes, as the temperature increases, the virus will die back.

*I believe that’s what happened with the Spanish Flu, as due tae WWI there was a blackout on the msm except for Spain who sat out the conflict and were the only European country tae report it hence the title Spanish Flu, naebody knew much about it. When it did return in the autumn/fall it really accelerated.

Hopefully the world will be better prepared by then and this IMHO is what the trumpet is counting on and then he can say he cured it on the run in tae the election in November.

BTW I don’t watch him when he comes on, nor that smarmy bassa pence who was on his way out prior tae being selected as running mate, but Mrs TT was telling me in his mini speech last night he was blaming the European Union for it.

Fr Toner was in tonight, and brought me in some religious magazines.

My weight is 58.75 kgs. They did not take a blood sample because they want to incorporate other tests with it. So the doctor says they’ll do it next week.

Physically I have felt very tired today, between dinner time and later afternoon. I know I’m getting physically weaker. It is only to be expected. But I’m okay. I’m still getting the papers all right, but there’s nothing heartening in them. But again I expect that also and therefore I must depend entirely upon my own heart and resolve, which I will do.

I received three notes from the comrades in Armagh, God bless them again.

I heard of today’s announcement that Frank Hughes will be joining me on hunger-strike on Sunday. I have the greatest respect, admiration and confidence in Frank and I know that I am not alone. How could I ever be with comrades like those around me, in Armagh and outside.

I’ve been thinking of the comrades in Portlaoise, the visiting facilities there are inhuman. No doubt that hell-hole will also eventually explode in due time. I hope not, but Haughey’s compassion for the prisoners down there is no different from that of the Brits towards prisoners in the North and in English gaols.

I have come to understand, and with each passing day I understand increasingly more and in the most sad way, that awful fate and torture endured to the very bitter end by Frank Stagg and Michael Gaughan. Perhaps, — indeed yes! — I am more fortunate because those poor comrades were without comrades or a friendly face. They had not even the final consolation of dying in their own land. Irishmen alone and at the unmerciful ugly hands of a vindictive heartless enemy. Dear God, but I am so lucky in comparison.

I have poems in my mind, mediocre no doubt, poems of hunger strike and MacSwiney, and everything that this hunger-strike has stirred up in my heart and in my mind, but the weariness is slowly creeping in, and my heart is willing but my body wants to be lazy, so I have decided to mass all my energy and thoughts into consolidating my resistance.

That is most important. Nothing else seems to matter except that lingering constant reminding thought, ‘Never give up’. No matter how bad, how black, how painful, how heart-breaking, ‘Never give up’, ‘Never despair’, ‘Never lose hope’. Let them bastards laugh at you all they want, let them grin and jibe, allow them to persist in their humiliation, brutality, deprivations, vindictiveness, petty harassments, let them laugh now, because all of that is no longer important or worth a response.

I am making my last response to the whole vicious inhuman atrocity they call H-Block. But, unlike their laughs and jibes, our laughter will be the joy of victory and the joy of the people, our revenge will be the liberation of all and the final defeat of the oppressors of our aged nation.

  10. The difference in analysing our performance in defeat compared to theirs is stark (Sutton included)

Our players are ripped to shreds…no such attacks for them.quite sad..

  11. From BBC sport

    “Home fortress breached

    FT: Rangers 1-3 Bayer Leverkusen

That’s a first European defeat at home for Rangers under Steven Gerrard. They hadn’t lost at Ibrox in 17 games on the continent, stretching back to 2011.”

Where to start.. you just couldn’t make it up

  12. The EPL will now almost certainly postpone all fixtures for a period of time following the Arteta news. It will be interesting to see what happens here in Scotland.

What do they think is going to happen in 3 weeks time?

  14. Here is how one of them sees a way through next week…

    archimedes said:

We should say we’re happy to play, and if the Germans call it off we get a 3-0 win.

    Through 4-3, easy.

    😆😆😆

  15. the 3 week thing is purely psychological. If you announced it was 3 months people would totally crack up or would simply ignore guidelines.

3 weeks we can manage but now despite ourselves we are in survival mode so when they do extend it and even make it more stringent , the shock factor is gone and we just get on with it.

BBC report ( well part off )

Rangers ( sic) had an almost immediate shout for their own penalty when Goldsons glancing header hit Jonathan Tah, only for replays to show the ball had hit the defenders back.

    Anyone care to explain above?

  18. Maybe Saturday / Wednesday matches behind closed doors from now on is the way forward to get the games out of the way asap

  19. That ended any hope of a Rangers revival and ensured they would lose a European game at Ibrox for the first time since a Champions League qualification defeat against Malmo in 2011.

I was thing along the lines of playing games every day behind closed doors. By that I mean after Sky/ BT have their pick, otherclubs could have their games covered by cooncil TV and at least get some revenue to help survival. All clubs would have 3 to 4 days between games and as it’s on cooncil TV no need to go to the boozer

Great to see HT posting about Bobby Sands

  26. Given their dominance, it’s surprising Leverkusen didn’t win more emphatically. Possession seemed the name of the game rather than burying the opposition.

  27. Tonight we got a wee glimps of how it will be on Sunday . Ball out the wing , thems going down at any tackle , high ball pumped into the box , I know they were well beat tonight ,but most of the sevs were getting stuck in , again just what we will encounter on Sunday , they need to win . We have win or draw options ,it’s there for us to grasp , but we can’t carry passengers . And it won’t be easy . HH

  28. The slowest ever player I saw in the flesh, and remember I saw Andy Ritchie in his prime, was Andy Gray when he returned to “play” for the huns. I swear I saw him set out for a ball that was 2 yards away and was beaten to it by a player who had to cover 10 yards to get there.

The slowest I’ve seen since Andy’s disgrace was tonight watching Alfie Morelos. He was towing a tractor, hiding Colombia’s national gold reserves in his boots and had a particularly weighty rucksack on his back. Snails were taunting him and tortoises were just a blur as they went past/

  29. Good morning CQN from another frozen day in the Garngad

we should pump that mob on Sunday, The German Huns should have scored another couple last night 4 or 5-1 would have been more justified.

We do not play that differently to the Germans, it’s just that they have better players carrying out the tactics. For that reason I would not pass to much across the back as that pitch is a disaster and mistakes will happen.

    3-1 to the leather belts.
