Time to rest a raft of players

120

Celtic hope for their fifth win in run of five consecutive games away from Celtic Park at Motherwell tonight.  The fixture calendar does not get easy after this game, but the players will be glad of home advantage when it comes, consecutive games on the road takes a toll.

Motherwell have won three of their last five games, including a 3-0 humbling of Aberdeen, a decent return in anyone’s language, but the other two games in that run constituted a 2-0 loss at Livingston and a 7-1 drubbing at Ibrox.  This is a team which either gets it spectacularly right or just as wrong.

We have struggled at Fir Park in recent seasons.  A late penalty kept our Scottish record run without defeat intact last season, while we twice came from two goals down before Tom Rogic dinked a last minute winner the season before.  Add to the mix that we will pair up an unfamiliar central defensive partnership of Jozo Simunovic and Filip Benkovic and there is enough reason to hope that we take command of proceedings early on.

Leigh Griffiths is back fit and I would give him the nod tonight over Odsonne Edouard, who has carried the load up front on his own for weeks.  This might also be an occasion to rest others: James Forrest, Callum McGregor, Mikael Lustig and Kieran Tierney would each benefit from a seat in the stands.

  1. Celtic 6 wins and a draw last 7 league games. 5 clean sheets. 4 in the last 4 games.

Maybe boyata missing might have an impact.

    But complacency ? Nawe.

  2. Good evening CQN from a dark but optimistic Garngad

I would not make too many changes tonight.

I like familiarity in a team. For them to get to know each other’s styles.

Murderwell will be a solid, physical unit. So any win will do for me.?

MAH I hope all your procedures have went well.?

  4. Things you won’t read in the Daily Record – CELTIC have raked in almost £1.5million thanks to the efforts of four of their players in the World Cup Finals in Russia during the summer.

Tom Rogic (Australia), Dedryck Boyata (Belgium), Mikael Lustig (Sweden) and Cristian Gamboa (Costa Rica) all starred for their countries in the footballing spectacular.

  7. After last weeks complacent Euro away victory and very complacent Cup Final win I will settle for a complacent three points tonight whether hard won or coasted.

    Bring on the Mudrags…

  8. A wee update from Stephen (MAH)

He’s been accepted for the clinical trial startin on Monday at the Beatson but still a long way to go.

MAH – good luck with the clinical trial. You’ll get more direct attention in a clinical trial than in normal care (which is excellent in any case) – Cancer Clinical Trials Nurses are your best friends :-)

  13. Here’s hoping for 3 points and no injuries.

One wee hope for the rest of the season is that the likes of Edouard, Griff, Sinky and Rogic develop more awareness of teammates who are in a better scoring position than they themselves are in. They all want to pull the trigger when they get a sniff of goal without demonstrating that they have that 6th sense/that split-second awareness that there are players in the clear to pass to.

Enjoy the game everyone. Our 6-year-old son has 4 friends over for a sleepover as it’s a holiday here tomorrow. They’ve only been here an hour and I’m trying to figure out how to see the game while keeping them entertained :)

Jonny Hayes played his schoolboy football at left full.

Maybe Jonny Hayes can be the scape goat we have been missing since Brendan Rodgers took over
