Time to revise some plans

474

Having watched previous generations of Celtic teams park the bus at Barcelona I’m not one to criticise Hamilton Accies when they do the same at Celtic Park. They put on an effective defensive performance but although the game got nervy as Celtic defended a one goal lead in the final minutes, Accies were never able to pass the ball well enough to make a genuine attempt at goal.

The only goal of the game came from a deep run by Moussa Dembele, who had dropped behind Tom Rogic, before sprinting forward to collect a pass from the Aussie. The Accies back line were concentrating on catching Leigh Griffiths offside but didn’t have the response necessary to match Dembele’s run.

It was great play from Rogic, Dembele and Griffiths, who remained in control to finish. That aside, the incredibly high standard of passing Celtic have achieved in recent weeks wasn’t matched. That’s football, it’s impossible for players, or anyone else for that matter, to perform with machine-like consistency, even John Lennon wrote the lyric, “I am a walrus”.

As well as experiencing varying levels of performance, we are now far enough into the season for teams to face Celtic with some revised plans. We play three at the back in possession, so Premiership teams push three men up when Craig Gordon has the ball, forcing the keeper to kick to the halfway line, where possession is often lost. This happened against Aberdeen, Motherwell and Accies in recent weeks.

Brendan Rodgers is miles ahead of his competition, but elements of games between now and the break will be more like chess matches than football. Not least our visit to Hamilton’s artificial surface on Christmas Eve. In the whole of 2016 only Motherwell beat Accies in consecutive games, and indication of an astonishing level of resilience by a club without the resources normally associated with senior football. Coo coo ca choo.

Good Morning Bhoys from a damp but Central Scotland. Kris Commons in my opinion has done more right at Celtic than he has done wrong.I believe Kris could move to a smaller club and do a great job for them. Like us all age has caught up with him as far as a top club is concerned he has lost the little bit of pace he had.Brendan has introduced a faster pace to our football which he believes does not fit Kris so he will move him on but I and many others will thank Kris and wish him well for his and his families future. H.H.

It was in ’68. The difference was that it was instantaneous and not protracted. The wee mhan knew he was in trouble and legged it. Big Jock chased him up the tunnel and dealt with it there and then.

Another aspect that needs to be taken into account is that way back then players didn’t have to worry about myriad TV cameras catching every move. KC should have been aware that it was a very high, public profile event that was being played out live.

Yes, Lennon should have; however, the stress Lennon was under at that time was considerable and maybe that can be taken in mitigation. His life had been threatened. Commons was substituted.

  7. Does anyone know the best way to go about tracing the descendants of an Irish immigrant to Boston and then New York in circa 1865-70?

The man I am doing some work on is John James Breslin 1833-1887 of Drogheda.

Very little is known here about Breslin although he contributed substantially to the Fenian cause at the time. As a employee of Richmond Prison in Dublin he organised/effected the escape James Stephens in 1865 (Stephens was the leader of the Fenians at the time).

After emigration to the States he travelled to Australia in 1875 under the assumed identity of a James Collins, a supposed millionaire with forged documents suggesting he had substantial land and mining interests in Nevada.

He successfully infiltrated the British authorities gaining access to Fremantle prison and secured the release of 6 Fenian prisoners serving hard labour for life. The 6 became known as the Catalpa Six and the incident reinvigorated Irish Nationalism at the time.

Upon return to the States he worked with John Holland on the submarine project ‘The Fenian Ram.’ The submarine design was later purchased by the US Navy and copied by other naval forces.

So to cut a long story short I’m trying to establish what happened to the Breslin’s in the US?

  8. VFR….

    I know the history.

I wonder what the powers that be at the club did to help him during his tenure as manager?

They must have been aware that anything was possible, ie his reaction to McCo*st.

    Very sad.

SPFL lawyers tell clubs players must go on ZERO HOUR contracts to avoid government pay levels

SPFL advised by their lawyers to ask Scottish government to exclude football from living wage regulations.

    By Gary Ralfston

    06:00, 15 DEC 2016Updated22:20, 14 DEC 2016

The SPFL are running so scared of national minimum wage legislation their lawyers have advised signing players on zero hours contracts.

A Record Sport investigation has revealed the despised deals are among a raft of controversial suggestions made to combat the growing issue of illegal pay levels in Scottish football.

The SPFL have even been advised by their lawyers, Harper Macleod, to consider a request to the Scottish government to exclude football from living wage regulations, which guarantees workers aged 25 and over at least £7.20 an hour.

However, that scandalous suggestion has been slammed by SNP MSP James Dornan, who accused the SPFL of “arrogance” in believing it can operate outside the law.

Over the last 18 months, Record Sport has reported on increasing concerns over the failure of clubs to pay national minimum wage after St Mirren handed a young professional, Kieran Doran, a £1-a-week contract and Falkirk midfielder Will Vaulks agreed a deal that netted him just £4.33 a month.

Tomorrow, we will name and shame more clubs in a move that will put SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster on the back foot amid claims he is not on top of his brief.

Our report comes a week before parliament debates the issue, now part of a long running petition first put forward by grassroots campaigners Willie Smith and Scott Robertson in 2010.

“It’s clear he doesn’t even know what’s going on under his own roof. Even a cursory glance at the contracts his clubs are offering players would expose the scandal of the failure to pay national minimum wage.

“The document from Harper Macleod is a panic cry from an organisation in the SPFL that is unwilling, or unable, to govern on an issue of growing concern.”

An SPFL spokesman said: “All companies in the UK, including SPFL clubs, are bound by minimum wage legislation.”

An HMRC spokesman added: “HMRC continues to crack down on employers who ignore the law, ensuring that their employees receive the wages they are entitled to.”

SPFL supremo Neil Doncaster stated “It is a shame that the government does not know how football works in this country. If this is to be imposed upon us then we will have no qualms about employing younger and younger children to come and work for us at cheaper costs”
