“Timid” Celtic second best in Perth

147

Against a side who started 8 points adrift at the bottom of the table, the champions-elect were miles short of what is required and deserved nothing from the game.  St Johnstone gave warning of the danger they could be from a free kick just a minute before they scored.  The warning went unheeded as Celtic conceded the only goal of the game inside four minutes.

After the game, Brendan Rodgers suggested the players were timid and too comfortable.  It is true they are in a comfortable position, without any domestic challenger worthy of the name.  The manager excused only Callum McGregor from this criticism.  It is a weighty accusation to level at a group you have coached into a second season.

For most of us, the consequences of yesterday’s defeat is that we will not be there when the title is won.  Players (and managers) often don’t get the importance of this.  They are always there; the ordinary fans less so.  Now, it is just as likely that the title will be won after Aberdeen face Newco on Sunday.  You might learn about it by text message.

If the players are too comfortable they will not win the treble.  You are the manager, Brendan.  Fix it.  At least it’s not a continuation of the malaise which was evident during last season…..

A word which is overused on here is ‘entitled ‘ ,but its obvious a lot of folk on here ,didn’t suffer the hun cheating teams in late 80s,90s,EBTs or similar were in play, how did Gascoigne, Laudrup,Hateley, Woods, Butcher, Steven’s,Wilkins end up in Scottish football, join the dots, far too much negatively for a team 2 games away a Treble, try if you can to enjoy it

  8. On FF

    ” Scum are a poor team.Stumbling now”

    ” Yes,stumbling into another Treble”

  9. that 1982 league win. first time we did back to back league champions since 1974.

we wouldnt do it again till martins 2nd season 2002.

since then 18 leagues in 22 years

and yet people complain about possession based attacking football.

and leave Celtic park early if we are winning.

    tough. crowd.

whats the word i am looking for ?

The thing that always got me with that crowd was they hung about Scotland well after finishing playing for them .

Just couldn’t figure out at the time what was keeping them here.

  11. Ok. Lets look at the Hearts game.

Hearts disgracefully settled for a 0-3 defeat and played anti football in the second half.

However we were at home and should have been relentless in the second half.

We should have given them the absolute humiliation that anti football deserved.

We did not and many of our crowd voted with their feet around the 75 minute mark.

This increasing trend cannot be dismissed. It is factual. Football must be entertaining for the match day attendees.

    HH.

  12. So, according to Bada Bing, any non kiss Rodgers ass flavoured opinions are not welcome when Celtic are in the run in to a League title, maybe Scottish Cup as well, and another one horse league treble.

Does Rodgers and his league of nations dressing room actually read posts on a Celtic blog?

Where do they get all of the translators? How much would that cost the sly PLC?

If the players and Rodgers and PLC did read posts, there would already be a Jungle, a Kop, and a Stretford End built into Parkhead to appease the only fans who know that all seating sucks the soul out of Parkhead, Anfield, and Old Trafford, ie: the indisputable 12th Man/Woman of Celtic, the Green Brigade. The only fans who get that all seating sucks!

Maybe that’s why the other 57,000 at Parkhead cause the team to be defeated without the GB cause the 57,000 “Peoples Friend” reading bores are the types of fans that the PLC want as the 57,000 are easily mastered by the PLC sleekitly cowards.

  18. *SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*

*RESULTS FROM GAME #49 ST JOHNSTONE 1 CELTIC 0*

    Good evening, friends.

Not sure that was our worst performance of the season but arguably it was our worst result. Having been presented with the opportunity to set things up for the 60,000 looking to attend next Saturday’s party we failed to beat the bottom team in the league. Throughout the game we remained one-paced, absent of imagination and uncommitted in any 50/50 situations. Kuhn and Forrest probably shared the honour for worst miss of the match. And whilst the refereeing was questionable (again) we really shouldn’t be blaming our poor result on anything other than our teams own performance.

At the beginning of every season I’m sure that 99% of us would accept winning the league by a single point or even goal difference so, pretty soon, we will again be Champions. But many of our games during 2025 have been pretty devoid of real entertainment and excitement and that’s the real concern that I have. I’ve always preferred ‘performance’ to ‘results’ and I really hope that we return to that very soon!

As for my usual match report – not a lot worth saying, really. Engels should have put us ahead after 40 seconds, Sinisalo produced a fine one handed save in the 21st minute to stop us ging 2 behind, Reo cracked a shot off the post in 54 and that was pretty much that. There should have been 8 or 9 minutes added at the end rather than 5 but I doubt that would have changed the result.

Big improvements required for our final 7 games if we want to actually play 8!!

We have now played 49 games this season, winning 34, drawing 8 and losing 7. We have scored 133 and conceded 45 (domestically it’s 118-28 and in Europe it was 15-17). We remain 13 points (and 38 goals) clear at the top with 6 games remaining and need 6 more points for the title.

If we do get our act together we still have a chance of setting a new record for league goals scored in a SPL season. Celtic already hold the record, 105 goals in season 2003-04. We need another 14 from the 6 remaining games to better that.

Thank you so much to the 42 who voted this time around, smashing the previous low of 56 (Dinamo Zagreb 0-0 away). The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

    Sinisalo: 12

    Johnston: 7

    Carter-Vickers: 3

    Trusty: 0

    Schlupp: 0

    McGregor*: 15

    Engels: 3

    Hatate: 9

    Kuhn: 1

    Maeda: 3

    Jota*: 12

    Taylor: 9

    Yang*: 20

    Idah: 8

    McCowan: 8

    Forrest: 14

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against St Johnstone are –

    Yang – 5 points

    McGregor – 4 points

    Forrest – 3 points

Jota and Sinisalo – 2 points each

And the overall positions after 49 games played are –

    94 points – Maeda

    60 points – McGregor

    59 points – Engels, Kuhn

    52 points – Hatate, Schmeichel

    41 points – Bernardo, Scales

    39 points – Johnston A

    32 points – Trusty

    30 points – McCowan

    26 points – Carter-Vickers

    24 points – Kyogo

    22 points – Jota

    21 points – Taylor

    19 points – Schlupp, Valle

    18 points – Yang

    15 points – Idah

    7 points – Forrest, Nawrocki, O’Riley

    3 points – Sinisalo, Welsh

    2 points – Murray

0 points – Bonnar, Cummings, Holm, Johnston M., Kenny, Palma, Ralston, Turley

We now have our final league game before the split when we entertain Kilmarnock at Celtic Park on Saturday, kick off 12.30pm. Hail Hail!

    Agreed about Wilkins.

I know he had his demons but he was always worth listening to when he popped up on tv or radio.

It was a real eye opener for him going to Italy, even though he was a top player for England he soon realised he was the least fit player in the Milan squad.

On another occasion I heard him relate how it felt for a player when a new midfield signing was made. The fans were happy etc but for him and the other players they felt their futures were at risk.
