Title defence tested from the off

Aberdeen played three friendlies, scoring 10 and conceding a goal in each, before their four League Cup group games this month. They scored 12 without conceding in them.

Celtic Park on Sunday will be a whole different challenge, but as we remember from even recent times, getting the job done against lower league teams is seldom straightforward.

There have been more false dawns at Pittodrie over the last 30 years than sunny dawns, so we cannot expect too much from Jim Goodwin. Still, his team is close to full fitness, paying well, confident and will head to Celtic Park on Sunday as ready as they could hope to be.

The title defence will be tested from the off.

Nobody said all those players were part of the QSG.

It started off about Vic Davidson, then moved on to suggestions of other young players who promised much but fell away.

I saw Baggio senior playing junior and he made Stevie look like twiggy.

Institutional racism in one of our country’s sporting organisations. Who would have thought it? Scotland is a happy, friendly, welcoming diverse society with equal tolerance for all, irrespective of colour, religion or any other characteristic that renders human beings unique. Isn’t it? It appears we have more than one “secret shame”. How long before the fundamental fault line attracts the same level of media attention? Don’t hold your breath. Salmond and “wee nippy sweetie” have both rejected opportunities to raise the issue. Those of us who are in favour of independence for our adoptive nation should take note and remain both vigilant and sceptical.

Get to the NON camouflaged point = you’ll be deleted by the puppet Mod.

    Ain’t that so, Mod?

I recall being at Easter Rd, someone said behind me ‘ who is the new guy’ I said looks like Vic Davidson and it was! Must have been late 79 or early 1980.

Enjoyed the chat this afternoon guys.

Like one of those six degrees of separation things.

Started off with MIkey Johnston and reached twiggy via roberto Baggio.

Sorry to break the news but someone did mention those very comments.

A certain Tiny Trot / Micro Marxist to be exact.

  10. I seem to recall Vic Davidson playing in a critical 4-3 win at fir park in the 79 run in.

It was the same night the Huns won a semi final v Patrick thistle I recall.

Cracking game. Vital win for us as we played catch up with the games in hand.

  12. TC was absolutely world class when it came to club scapegoat — never quite sure why but he seemed to get it from all directions.

Very distant memories but he always seemed to be left out of the really big games.

Not sure if this is correct but that is my memory.

    Happy to be enlightened.

Must have caused some folk a deal of angst. When rid featured in CQN’s great uncapped celts feature.

Must be the only guy to be a candidate for great uncapped celts for some snd they embarrassed the hoops for others.

I do remember him destroying the Huns a few times and the famous Calli double shuffle.

  18. BSR,

Stevie Fulton was working up in Rosyth cutting steel when the 1st aircraft carrier was being built.

Billy did indeed say it with the best of intentions. Baggio was something else – indeed the Divine Ponytail.

Not long now until we see the Champions play competitively again. Aberdeen will be well organised and will play for a 0-0 but I hope and think we will blow them away.

    According to Celticminded,

Ideguchi injured at Lennoxtown today at Ross Hall for an operation.

  23. My dad reckoned Vic Davidson really suffered by comparison to Kenny D and TC because he wasn’t wee Bertie or Bobby M.

Jim Brogan was not quite a Lion and Jim Craig because he had a degree and was obviously too clever to be a decent footballer.

Hay and Connelly he felt were different class as was Cattenach which sadly didn’t prove accurate.

The original Brian McLaughlin’s knee injury was described by Jock Stein as the worst football injury he’d ever seen.

On Easter Rd what amazed me, no one suffered serious injury crossing that we bridge. Recall winning the league there a bhoy fell over the side. Must have survived as I don’t remember anything on the papers.
