Toast and chips, if you’re lucky

397

So you have money left at the end of the month?  Enough for a holiday, for Christmas?  Chances are if you are a season ticket holder at a UK football club you do.  Even if this is the case, and if you have a full time wage coming into the house, you’ll have noticed the cost of living a normal, socially-connected, life in the UK is not cheap.

Housing, travel, energy are all expensive.  If you want to get or keep a job, a mobile phone is increasingly necessary.  If the only wage coming into the house is low, or if you are bringing up a family, or if you are unwaged, or on your own with kids, you’re struggling.  The heating will be rationed, Christmas is an annual worry you save for 11 months of the year, holidays are something other families talk about.

Life is miserable for many families, demeaningly so.

I heard a politician last week suggest food banks have burgeoned in recent years due to them being better advertised.  I respectfully disagree.  Food poverty exists across the UK, alongside heating and housing poverty.  People eat toast, a tin of beans or a plate of chips as their main daily meal.  Sometimes this is not even an option.

If you’re on a limited wage or keeping a family together on benefits your money will be gone before the next payment is in the bank, pretty much every week or month.  You put the heating up during the cold spell last month and have now paid the bill.  There’s will be no money for several days and there’s no food in the house.  What do you do?

Fortunately food banks exist, not because they are a well marketed business success story, because hundreds of thousands of people in towns and cities across the country have no food before the next tranche of money arrives.

The Penny Dinners Brother Walfrid provided to kids in the east end of Glasgow, which Celtic were started to fund, resonate today.  This is why today, on the 100th anniversary of Walfrid’s death, you are asked to bring a bag of provisions along to Celtic Park.  That food is your way of paying into the social fund that gave you Celtic.  There is a possibility that collectively, you will achieve something magnificent for some of the poorest families in Scotland.

While you’re in a listening mood, CQN’er Tommy Melly, an integral part of TeamOscar, is running the Great Edinburgh Run on Sunday for Neuroblastoma Children’s Cancer Alliance.  He’s also doing the Glasgow 10k in June and the Great Scottish Run in October, all for NCCA.  You can do your bit in memory of Oscar, and for those kids who fight on, here.

Have a great day at the football, I hear the banners on the stadium at the top of Celtic Way will be worth photographing.

  1. I did the food bank contribution in Castlemilk today, as I do every month doesent make me a great person, but I do what I do, I did the last one at Celtic Park and got a form shoved in my face, and asked if I wanted to sign it, it wasent aggression or anything but left a bad taste in my mouth and I vowed never to do it again, as far as I’m concerned I done it because I wanted to do it and this evenings contribution for others I hope goes well, and I mean that.

But when it has to be who is running it and who is in charge, that I don’t get, as far as I am concerned, it should be a charity food drop off on behalf of Celtic supporters, it’s not rocket science that it’s for the needy, let’s leave it at that, in my opinion.

Or am I not being politically correct?

    Hibs statement –

Hibernian FC’s Chief Executive, Leeann Dempster, today commented on the final round of fixtures for the SPFL Championship.

Leeann said: “In previous seasons, the League has ensured that all of the final round fixtures are played at the same time.

“I have been in contact with the SPFL following its announcement that one final round fixture would kick off after all the other results are known. I have reminded them in very clear terms that – as the organiser of the competition – the responsibility for protecting its unimpeachable sporting integrity lies with them.”

The previous one was organised by the GB.

This one’s organised by the Foundation, I think.

So I don’t think you’ll have anything shoved in your face when you contribute, which I’ve no doubt you will.

If you are looking in where is the best place to watch Celtic games locally?

Arrive Sunday the 24th at circa 5PM so in plenty of time to catch a 12:30 kick off in Glasgow.

Celtic bars showing nothing, sandiegoceltic.com website is shut down also.

    Cheers,

If the game is indeed on Celtic TV, you would be most welcome in my home to watch the game. My “condo” is down at the beach a stones throw from all the local beach bars and clubs. Depending on the time of kick off, we could have a couple of pints at my local The Taproom, served by the “Christina Hendricks-esque” barmaids and then adjourn to my hoose.

Thanks to local, youthful techie geniuses (I’m not one of them), I have my computer linked up to a wide-screen TV and the atmosphere at the game, much to my neighbours dismay, fairly booms. A home game is Paradise delivered to California.

If you fancy it, leave a message and we’ll get in touch.

    Good to hear.

This is one for us to whine about but other clubs to take action against.

    The vanishing Forrest.

Seen a few posts about James Forrest’s omission from the Celtic squad for Inverness.

With regard to this evenings fixture, it will be interesting to see if he makes it, given what’s gone before, in terms of injury inclusion and non inclusion, and with Hamdump coming up again.

I expect we’ll have James Forrest at some point tonight before, or after GMS. Stuart Armstrong will be looking to feature more than he has done in recent games, and Kris Commons and Anthony Stokes will want in, with the semi final in mind also.

Adam Matthews might get the nod ahead of Efe Ambrose at RB, and with Kilmarnock seeing the worst of Scottish refereeing on Sunday, we hope that the referee isn’t a talking point, in what should be a comfortable home win, on a proper surface.

  8. It’s tonight’s collection for the food banks that make me thankful that I’m amongst so many good souls.

  9. Anyone off to the game tonight. I’ll be working my taxi tonight, and I need to drop off some stuff for the collection, so, if you’re lucky enough to flag me down, I’ll hand you my donation, and you’ll get a freebie to the game!

Offer is not exclusive to CQNer’s!

  12. The main difference between the former Soviet countries since they ‘ditched’ communism is that they no longer make any pretence that they are egalitarian. I’m not sure living standards have improved for most people who lived there. Massive emigration from some of those countries would indicate that capital has not improved their lot.

Any idea how many people die as a result of the outworkings of capitalism? It’s not so easy to.pin the mysery it brings to the bulk of the world’s populous on a big scary individual dictator or three because the system is smart enough to stay largely impersonal and lay all at the fretwork great temple of ‘the market’s. So when the ‘markets’ decide that a poor country is a huge risk for defaultingredients on.loans tge markets decide, with no reference to any democratic structure that the country in question must pay massive interest rates at the expense of being able to develop and improve the lot of its people. Or perhaps the ‘markets’ dictate that pharmaceutical companies will make little profit from solving the Aids crisis or providing affordable drugs for the same.

It’s a microcosm in ‘the journey’ or in some eyes the biggest scandal in global football.

We’ve all to take part again next year in the same league, same corruption, same executive head, same cheating, newly qualified fast tracked staff.

    Looking forward to it?

  14. Maybe Lawell etc will be standing around Parkhead tonight collecting everyone’s donations?

Nope it’ll be ordinary Celtic supporters, some of whom will be members of the Association, Affiliation, Green Brigade and Celtic Trust who’ll take your kind donations.

    I wouldn’t expect anything less.

  15. It’s 6pm and all ready there are hundreds of donations on the clover.

Shout out to mwd a day his big bhoy and another wee chap who are bucket were and messages collectors on the prime pitch at the start of the celtic way.

Can’t say that I am and after reading Auldheid’s excellent article on CQN this morning the little ray of hope I had has been extinguished by the news that they are moving the Huns game to give them a wee shove up the arse of the rest of us…

Enjoy tonights game at the last bastion of truth, the stands:))

  17. I’m currently in the Algarve and have no access to see the game tonight. Bummer!

I’ll be represented by my son Daniel. Hé’s supposed to be studying for his finals but hé’s informed me that hé’s gone in to CP at 4pm to help out with the Foodbank.

I suppose theres no better reason to have a night off. He doesn’t get to many games so i hope he’s treated to a few goals tonight.

I’ll be relying on CQN for updates.

I’ll raise a wee glass to all those involved with the Foodbank tonight.

    Hail Hail

  18. On the 100th anniversary of Bro Walfrid’s death, it is entirely appropriate for the Celtic Foundation to hold a foodbank collection tonight, and equally appropriate for CQN to give it a publicity boost. Shame on you, Neganon, to attempt to hijack such an occasion to pursue your anti PL agenda.

The discussion on “communism” has equally been used by the usual suspects to peddle their own unwavering point of view. My tuppenceworth is that UK is one of the richest (top 6?) states in the world, yet thousands, many of them working in low wage jobs, rely on foodbanks to feed their families. This is indefencible.

  19. Celtic must get the three points to-night otherwise the pressure will build for the run-in and anything is liable to happen. Interesting to note that Daryl Murphy who flopped at Celtic is top scorer in the English Championship and is in contention with Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town for promotion to the EPL. What is it about strikers at Celtic is it the blanket defences that they must contend with on a weekly basis or something else? It’s a funny old game.

  20. bournesouprecipe (17:40), the response from the SPFL will probably be “Now now Tiny Tims, just do as your told and quit whining.”

She should tell the SPFL that her club will not be playing their game on the Saturday unless all the other games are also played at the same time. So Hibs play at the same time as Sevco or they don’t play at all. If the outcome of the competition is going to be rigged against them in any case, what’s the worst that can happen?

  21. Evening Timland from a damp hun free mountain valley.

Come what may the huns will be in the top league next season, how sad that the other clubs don’t have the balls to stand up to them.

Me thinks this will be the last straw for me, they are trading while insolvent, still stiffing creditors, still breaking the rules, or being allowed to break the rules.

Why bother, really WTF is the point, it’s only a matter of time before they are winning the league at our expense again.

  23. Can’t see the game on tv to-night but the PSG v Barcelona game will substitute nicely thankyou. Looking forward to it as well as keeping track of the Celtic Park match on the old tablet.

  24. hankray (18:20), there is an outside chance that both Daryl Murphy and Gary Hooper could be going up into the EPL next season. Celtic flop Murphy with (to date) 24 of Ipswich Town’s 67 league goals this season, and Celtic mega-hit Hooper with 11 of Norwich City’s 83.

Who looks like the flop now?!
