Tom, Brendan and don’t ask Chic Charnley for a job reference

729

What is the cost of Tom Rogic’s continuing absence for another two months?  Tom has scored more than a few winning or equalising goals over the last two years.  We could need him to deliver the third leg of the treble, or to keep the winning run in the league going, but this will not be the real cost.

Tom has been robbed of a precious three months during the most effective spell of his professional life.  He improved with every passing month, got stronger, lasted the entire game and even scored a last minute winner.

With competition as it is at Celtic, he’ll be distraught.  The personal target of all those who have been on an upward trajectory this season is to put their name on the team sheet for the summer’s Champions League qualifiers.  For a player who the manager insisted worked for months before he was relied upon to last 90 minutes, any time he gets before the end of the season will be about recuperation.

For now, there should be no personal targets for Tom apart from being fully fit come June.

You know when you read a nugget which encapsulates much of the journey Scottish football has been on in recent decades?  Chick Charnley yesterday on Jim Duffy: “When I played for him at Dundee and Hibs, he would give me Mondays off because he knew I enjoyed my weekends.”

And that was Chic making the case that Jim should have a higher job!  Cheers.

Another quote to consider, this time from Brendan:

“There are three types of supporters. The first type who absolutely love you because you are the manager of Celtic.  It doesn’t matter what you do, they’ll give you shirts and want you to sign everything.

“The second group are: ‘Okay, we’ll give you a chance and let’s see how you do. See if you win games and I’ll decide’.

“The third group, that’s the group who if you won five they’ll say you should have won seven. ‘You won 5-2? Why did you let in the two goals?’ You can never win!”

I wonder if he’s spoken to Gordon Strachan?

Oldtim

A question for those of you who have been here since the early days:

Oldtim made a significant first post on CQN but neither he nor I have a copy of it.  It was, however, copied and referred to by many in the months that followed.  If you have a copy, let me know.  Thanks.

If you read the comments under the clip you would think that the Moderators on CorrsQuikNews had nipped out to Greggs.

  2. Great posts tonight, hope the mood stays positive.

Was in Madrid last weekend and decided to include Athletico in the itinerary. I saw Réal Madrid years ago when Zidane played for them and did the Bernabeu stadium tour a couple of years ago.

The Vincente Calderon stadium is easy to get to by Metro and has a capacity of around 55k.

My first impression of it as we approached it was how old it looked and as we made our way to our seats it was obvious that the stadium could do with a major revamp.

Athletico were playing another team from Madrid who were promoted last season so I was expecting a good crowd and atmosphere.

The away support numbered around a thousand and there were lots of empty seats amongst the home support.

The match itself was poor, little flair or quality, although Athletico did win 3-0.

I went along, more out of curiosity, but was disappointed with the experience. The home support were poor, rarely getting behind their team. However, the Ultras behind the goal kept singing for the ninety minutes, just like our own Green Brigade.

I think the way Brendan has our team playing we should not fear any meeting with Athletico in the near future.

Andrea’s sister is a wiz on the ole tambourine.

We should get her into replace the drummer in the ole Green Brigade, who has all the swing of a pallet full of bricks bouncin’ down a flight of stairs.

    Love Street – fond memories.

Like you there was a fair bit of hmming and hawing about going to the game. We took the car instead of the Supporter’s bus – someone’s birthday or anniversary (can’t remember who) and parked up town side.

As you said – game goes 4-0 and we decide to make an early exit (cause the 3 of us + wives were going out for dinner). We get to the car and hear a roar – must’ve scored again. Start car and switch on Radio Shortbread as Dundee score – cue bedlam.

The 3 of us pile out car – lock up and head back to Love Street. Fortunately the exit gates were opened and we got back onto the terrace in time for the final whistle.

We won the League – much singing, dancing and drinking that evening. Apart from the game and the outcome – to this day cannot remember where we ended up that evening with our wives or how or when we got home!

A day in the life of supporting the Celtic!

    H!H!

“Big Billy ‘s mum was from Strabane.”

Great story re Love St. Thank you for posting it.

The mother of a friend of mine is also from Strabane though she has lived in Scotland for more than 60 years.

In 1977, Denis Norden did the very first “It’ll be alright on the night”. One of the clips was from Northern Ireland’s equivalent of Reporting Scotland where the interviewed people from Strabane about some local event. They interviewed this guy who spoke quicker than a McCoist doing a walkaway and nobody could understand a word. They tried 4 or 5 times, asking him to slow down. “Right, right, slower okay,” he said….then bang straight back into 100 miles an hour. They eventually gave up

Anyway, I mentioned to my friend who had a gentle dig at his mother about the Strabane accent. Her reply was along the lines of “Ach, that’s [and named the guy]. Nobody in Strabane ever knows what he is saying.

  8. Praecepta. 8.43.

Thank goodness you went back for the celebrations. That would have tormented you forever, if you hadn’t.

The bit about not remembering how you got home, brilliant!!! What a night it must have been.

    Cadizzy 8.45.

Thanks. I burst out laughing at the punchline, just magic.

  9. Cadizzy, I was driving through Tyrone about 10 years back, coming from Strabane I stopped to ask a guy for directions. I reckon it must have been that same guy.

Not a single word could I understand.

  10. JNP,

    Hi T…

Hope that you are free of the ‘attacks’ of late. Another poster on here, and also close friend, suffers from similar ailment.

Fond memories of Billy, Fitzy, et al.

So many stories of travel (and travails) with that crew, abroad and wherever…

    Billy, Paul, RIP…

    Regards & Hail Hail

I went to the Vicente Calderon a couple,of years ago, done the tour. You’re right, it’s a dump. The reason they’ve let it get like that, and spend little on it, is they’re moving to a new stadium, either this year or next.

  13. Thebarcamole.

Hey F. I nearly mentioned you in dispatches in my story to see if you would post, then I thought ach he will post if he feels like it.

2 of lives great ghuys both sadly taken far too young.

    Health wise. Things difficult.

I’m reducing my hours to 28 hours from April. 4×7, won’t work a Wed, so that I don’t work anymore than 2 consecutive days. I’m fortunate that I have an employer who will let me do that.

How are things with you in Wales?

  14. VFR800 is now a Monster 821 on

I was living in Windsor in 1986; had been for a few years but still regularly cam up for the games.

I travelled up by train on the Friday night from Euston; as ever the Friday overnight train was full of mad Tims. Plenty of bevvy, card schools and nae sleep.

As usual got into Glasgow and went to see family for breakfast, then to the Condorrat Social Club to meet up wi’ some mates and then to the game. Bedlam, before, during and after the game. Back to the social club for a few more beers (still nae sleep) and managed to get into Glasgow Central for the night train back down.

It was bedlam again for the first couple of hours then most people, shell-shocked from a 24 hour party started to crash out. Beddy-baws back down to London; tube and train back to Windsor and pretty much straight to Mass. St Marks had hall with a bar so it was a few beers after Mass then back home and a Sunday afternoon battling sleep.

    It was well worth it!

  15. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Jimmynotpaul, he doesn’t know what round his school team is in .

In their last two games in the schools u/18 cup, they played in Stranraer then up to Inverurie.

He wants another long haul game.

He told me there was a wee nyaff in the Inverurie team who was trying to wind my son up.

My son told him he didn’t understand the nyaff and told him he was a hillbilly which greatly wound the Inverurie boy up. Not the most PC thing to say but it worked.
