Tom, Brendan and don’t ask Chic Charnley for a job reference

729

What is the cost of Tom Rogic’s continuing absence for another two months?  Tom has scored more than a few winning or equalising goals over the last two years.  We could need him to deliver the third leg of the treble, or to keep the winning run in the league going, but this will not be the real cost.

Tom has been robbed of a precious three months during the most effective spell of his professional life.  He improved with every passing month, got stronger, lasted the entire game and even scored a last minute winner.

With competition as it is at Celtic, he’ll be distraught.  The personal target of all those who have been on an upward trajectory this season is to put their name on the team sheet for the summer’s Champions League qualifiers.  For a player who the manager insisted worked for months before he was relied upon to last 90 minutes, any time he gets before the end of the season will be about recuperation.

For now, there should be no personal targets for Tom apart from being fully fit come June.

You know when you read a nugget which encapsulates much of the journey Scottish football has been on in recent decades?  Chick Charnley yesterday on Jim Duffy: “When I played for him at Dundee and Hibs, he would give me Mondays off because he knew I enjoyed my weekends.”

And that was Chic making the case that Jim should have a higher job!  Cheers.

Another quote to consider, this time from Brendan:

“There are three types of supporters. The first type who absolutely love you because you are the manager of Celtic.  It doesn’t matter what you do, they’ll give you shirts and want you to sign everything.

“The second group are: ‘Okay, we’ll give you a chance and let’s see how you do. See if you win games and I’ll decide’.

“The third group, that’s the group who if you won five they’ll say you should have won seven. ‘You won 5-2? Why did you let in the two goals?’ You can never win!”

I wonder if he’s spoken to Gordon Strachan?

Oldtim

A question for those of you who have been here since the early days:

Oldtim made a significant first post on CQN but neither he nor I have a copy of it.  It was, however, copied and referred to by many in the months that followed.  If you have a copy, let me know.  Thanks.

Tontine tim from 12.16 last night, my apologies for not replying to your post sooner.

The hellawtherr China headline basically sums up our sports media.

Zeng Zhi could have got a really deep cut on his thigh from Lafferty’s studs but the sun, I think it was, thought let’s make a joke of it.

I wonder if any of our ex players who no longer live here were to be asked about the officiating in our games against what was Rangers , particularly in the 2009/10 season, and what their responses would be.

On another subject Willie Wallace is back in Glasgow tonight after spending some time in Lisbon with some of the Lions.

He’ll be at the game tomorrow. Of course it was his goals that won us the Scottish Cup 50 years ago.

Willie is staying with my big sister and her husband and he’s got 100 copies of That Season in Paradise to sign for us!

He’s in the Director’s Box tomorrow but will hopefully pop over to the CQN corner. He will be on CQN over the next few days, just need to organise.

At the game tomorrow have a look at the pitch. It’s not the best to be honest and if someone or something doesn’t meet the required standards under Brendan then it’s the end.

Apparently it’s also too slow to play on.

Maybe a surface like Arsenal’s could be arriving in the summer. This will make it even harder for visiting sides as Celtic go up another gear next season.

big ask tomorrow to go without tr sa and lg – br will have to be very clear about his game plan and who’ll go into the space ss makes

  5. With the continued absence of Griffiths, Armstrong and Rogic, the winning team tomorrow is

    Gordon

    Gamboa Boyata Sviatchenko Tierney

    Brown Bitton Henderson

    Forrest Dembele Sinclair

DeVries Sviatchenko Lustig McGregor Roberts Mackay-Stevens Aitchison

  6. TeT

No, but they have injected some kind of artificial fibre into the grass which makes it more durable and recover quickly.

  7. TET

Arsenal have one of the new hybrid pitches where strands of artificial (5% of pitch area) are intertwined with the grass

Our playing surface used to be one of the best and our groundsman used to win awards for it. It’s looked poor in recent years.

Why? Anything to do with the commonwealth games ceremony?

    Needs fixed.

  9. Gary, You have Erik both playing and as a sub. I take it that you meant Jozo to start.

P.S. Good solid team, wouldn’t really quibble except after the wonder goal, I’d like to see Lustig play again.

  10. CADIZZY

That how good Erik is! It’s a toss of the coin between the two of them who stars with Boyata.

Didn’t think we’d be saying that this time last year!

“Didn’t think we’d be saying that this time last year!”

Didn’t think we’d be saying that this time last month 0-)

  12. TTR-Gary67

Thanks, I remember reading that they had a % of artificial in with the real grass, I also recall reading, wrongly that it was a 4G.

I would imagine that the better the playing surface the better we will play.

The money needs to be spent or we give it to Hector, anything to give us an edge is fine by me, so a new top quality pitch is logical.

  13. Since wee Eddie ,one of the groundsman, retired, the football pitch, hasn’t been the same,The Groundsman at Motherwell, has to get the Greenkeeper award this season,it’s like a Carpet well done to him and his staff.

  14. Brendan, the guy is so meticulous. You just know this time next year the pitch will be top drawer.

Agree with you, sometimes posters chuck the blog because they don’t like other posts, which defeats the purpose scroll by and like today the blog gets back to what it’s all about, am not aiming this at any other poster/s, sometimes most of the nonsense goes right over my head anyway

Simple minds and all that, as for tomorrow I am always confident even blind faith during the 80s & 90s but this daft unbeaten run is now making me nervous :-)

Clancy as ref is more worrying than most, might want to prove he is “neutral” the way the most of the refs we get do !!!!!!!!

  16. Gerry, Cup games by their nature are always dodgy. It’s the only chance for rest of Scotland to get a trophy so you would expect Calley to give it a right go.

There is absolutely no doubt that this run will end & when it does it will be seen as a big shock.

    However hopefully not tomorrow.

Young Bhoys lead 3 nil at half time, a win here will put us into 2nd place, 4 pts behind Hibs with I think 3 games in hand.

  17. To all you nice people who bought sections of our pitch. Can we please get our tuft back.

This Dutch grass is not what it’s cracked up to be.
