Tom, Brendan and don’t ask Chic Charnley for a job reference

729

What is the cost of Tom Rogic’s continuing absence for another two months?  Tom has scored more than a few winning or equalising goals over the last two years.  We could need him to deliver the third leg of the treble, or to keep the winning run in the league going, but this will not be the real cost.

Tom has been robbed of a precious three months during the most effective spell of his professional life.  He improved with every passing month, got stronger, lasted the entire game and even scored a last minute winner.

With competition as it is at Celtic, he’ll be distraught.  The personal target of all those who have been on an upward trajectory this season is to put their name on the team sheet for the summer’s Champions League qualifiers.  For a player who the manager insisted worked for months before he was relied upon to last 90 minutes, any time he gets before the end of the season will be about recuperation.

For now, there should be no personal targets for Tom apart from being fully fit come June.

You know when you read a nugget which encapsulates much of the journey Scottish football has been on in recent decades?  Chick Charnley yesterday on Jim Duffy: “When I played for him at Dundee and Hibs, he would give me Mondays off because he knew I enjoyed my weekends.”

And that was Chic making the case that Jim should have a higher job!  Cheers.

Another quote to consider, this time from Brendan:

“There are three types of supporters. The first type who absolutely love you because you are the manager of Celtic.  It doesn’t matter what you do, they’ll give you shirts and want you to sign everything.

“The second group are: ‘Okay, we’ll give you a chance and let’s see how you do. See if you win games and I’ll decide’.

“The third group, that’s the group who if you won five they’ll say you should have won seven. ‘You won 5-2? Why did you let in the two goals?’ You can never win!”

I wonder if he’s spoken to Gordon Strachan?

Oldtim

A question for those of you who have been here since the early days:

Oldtim made a significant first post on CQN but neither he nor I have a copy of it.  It was, however, copied and referred to by many in the months that followed.  If you have a copy, let me know.  Thanks.

Exactly, am loving BR and this unbeaten run, I posted last Saturday night I met a guy I grew up with (now Sevco follower) his words were I know your going to win the league but this run is bugging me, as a wee bhoy I have always loved the Scottish Cup 1980 being my first as a 10yr old, the treble was never a massive thing for me, as the league cup was a cup I never associated with us growing up :-) and during Neil’s campaign Morton (in extra time after Morton goalie having game of his life) and I think that night Neil made 8 changes and putting some guy called Tom Rogic in who didn’t have a great game, wonder what happened to that bhoy, Morton put us out but the following week we had a chance to progress in the CL but these things are forgotten

Anyway, hopefully BR and the bhoys will continue this run and lead us to a wee final in May, so far this season from the very young to the very old I have never known Celtic fans (even the ones who are never happy) to be so united behind our manager, long may it continue

I will call in to the Harding Hotel at about 6pm

Any suggestions on how we will recognise one another

You wearing hoops or anything green ?

  3. Evening everyone, the blog has taken on a new attitude in the last 24 hours, thankfully.

I think it may well be that we have some football to focus on?

I will not be there tomorrow, my offspring bought my lady and myself matinee tickets for Still Game tomorrow, so hopefully the bhoys will do okay without me. I always am wary of ICT due to the mental scars they have inflicted on me and the prizes they have denied our club.

On a lighter note has anyone here been to the matinee of Still Game? What time do we get out as I have a table booked in town for 6.15, hopefully will be okay for that time.

  4. Gerry who was your pick this weekend?

Or were you one of Jobo’s bad bhoys? :-)

Too much good stuff posted today to scroll by.

There are still good posters on here. God has taken a few of the great ones. I’m going to do my best not to react to the divisive. Can’t promise anything mind :-)

Good luck to the Dallas jnr bhoy this weekend.

Was at that a couple of years ago, when you come out you cannot get a taxi so you have a walk to the City Centre, not too far but a few roads to cross, dont drink too much before the show as you may need to cross your legs if your are in the upper tiers, the toilets are not handy to access. I ate a La Lanterna which was not that far to walk

  6. TET, excuse my ignorance, how is the good lady?

Anyway, I was out in the pub one night when Methuselah said to me, ” Do you know that oul clown they call “old Tim”?

” I do” says I ” Why do you ask?”

” Because he once told that bampot Noah to build a big boat — something about sailing to Lisbon! And that daft bugger Noah started building the boat as well — the eejit that he is!”

” No way! — who would listen to a suggestion from that oul eejit! Jeez you would end up running about like a right arsehole! He has the daftest of ideas. He left a banner or something in Lisbon in 1267 just before the crusades or something. Swears he is going to go back and see if he can find it in lost property, but he needs some stupid bugger to act as a companion. He says that one day a gullible Sancho Panza will emerge from the east and take him!”

” The east?” says Methuselah ” Whit, like Blantyre? ……….”

  8. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

    Art of War, thank you.

I hope our bhoys do even better tomorrow.

I can’t be bothered with Caley and hope we win tomorrow then they get relegated at the end of the season.

For whatever reason when we play them at the Tulloch Stadium , we win more often than not but rarely play well at that venue.

I am, also have a shop online selling semi precious stones, I could by rights call myself an international gem dealer, now that conjures up all sorts, but nothing grand, the bottom end of the scale but I enjoy it, have picked up a couple of bargains to give to the weans for when we are gone, can’t seem to hold on to cash so they are the next best thing :-)

I have posted something similar before, but since you mentioned Love St. Here goes.

I lived in Priesthill at the time, only a few miles from Paisley. To be honest I never thought we could win the league. I thought we would beat St Mirren but Hearts couldn’t slip up, could they?

I had other things on my mind in May 1986. I was still single and had plenty of disposable income ( unlike now ) I had put a rather large wedge on Dancing Brave to win The 2,000 Guineas. The time of the race was 3.00. That decided it for me. No Love St.

I didn’t reckon on my very persistent best friend Billy Clark, Billy wouldn’t/ couldn’t accept that I would rather watch a horse race instead of watching Celtic win the league. You see Billy was a believer, he was convinced that Celtic would win the league. He came down to my house and badgered me and badgered me, anyone who knows/ knew Billy knows that he was very persuasive. He told me he wasn’t leaving my house until I came to Love St with him. Anyone who knows me knows I am strong minded too. The minutes ticked by, his latest plan was he wouldn’t let me watch the race in peace, so I may as well go to the game and check the horse result out later. Finally I cracked and said ok I will go, a few swear words in there too. We had left it so late that we had missed the supporters bus, thankfully a taxi was at hand.

We arrived at Love St, behind the goal we attacked in the second half, standing, being soaked by Chernobyl rain. I’m convinced that’s why I went bald a few years later :-). 4 goals in the first half had me thinking maybe just maybe. Jambos still 0.0. Then the St Mirren PA announcer said that Dancing Brave had won the 2,000 Guineas. I started to think more than just maybe. It was unusual for a horse result to be announced, it still is. I was elated. I was starting to believe that this was going to be one of those days where the stars align. The second half was pretty much a non event an early goal and then trying to find anyone with a radio as we desperately hoped for a Dundee goal. Something that isn’t often mentioned, is that there was a couple of false alarms, you felt sick to the stomach when you were informed that it was still 0.0. How could fellow fans be so cruel. Then it happened an almighty roar, you didn’t even have to double check you knew it was 1.0 Dundee. In a bizarre way, that really added to the tension, because if Hearts equalised then they would be champions, surely not, that would be unbearable, but the thought crossed my mind. Then another roar, not as big as the first but enough to know it was 2.0 Dundee. Yeeeeesss. Total bedlam. The celebrations will live with me forever. After the game we couldn’t find the bus, so we ran home from Paisley, it truly felt like flying, we were so high. We arrived back at The Royal Oak and the party began. Most people sung a party piece, just brilliant. A fabulous, fabulous night was had by all.

My big mate Billy died very suddenly just over 7 years ago, in his mid 40s and I still miss him. I will be forever grateful that because of his unwavering belief, that I managed to see us win at Love St.

    Hail Hail

How far I am from the land where I was born!

    Immense nostalgia invades my heart;

And seeing myself so lonely and sad like a leaf in the wind,

I want to cry, I want to die from this feeling.

Oh Land of Sun! I yearn to see you!

    Now that I’m so far from you, I live without light and love;

And seeing myself so lonely and sad like a leaf in the wind,

I want to cry, I want to die from this feeling.

My only memory as a 15yr old, ma mates Da had the keys to the community centre so we had free five @ sides all afternoon, his Da shouted we’ve done it, we’ve won the league, me and another 15 bhoys started jumping about the hall (before any smart Alec questions 5 @ sides, it was 4 team tourney :-)

Dancing Brave was also a beautiful animal :-)
