Tom, Brendan and don’t ask Chic Charnley for a job reference

729

What is the cost of Tom Rogic’s continuing absence for another two months?  Tom has scored more than a few winning or equalising goals over the last two years.  We could need him to deliver the third leg of the treble, or to keep the winning run in the league going, but this will not be the real cost.

Tom has been robbed of a precious three months during the most effective spell of his professional life.  He improved with every passing month, got stronger, lasted the entire game and even scored a last minute winner.

With competition as it is at Celtic, he’ll be distraught.  The personal target of all those who have been on an upward trajectory this season is to put their name on the team sheet for the summer’s Champions League qualifiers.  For a player who the manager insisted worked for months before he was relied upon to last 90 minutes, any time he gets before the end of the season will be about recuperation.

For now, there should be no personal targets for Tom apart from being fully fit come June.

You know when you read a nugget which encapsulates much of the journey Scottish football has been on in recent decades?  Chick Charnley yesterday on Jim Duffy: “When I played for him at Dundee and Hibs, he would give me Mondays off because he knew I enjoyed my weekends.”

And that was Chic making the case that Jim should have a higher job!  Cheers.

Another quote to consider, this time from Brendan:

“There are three types of supporters. The first type who absolutely love you because you are the manager of Celtic.  It doesn’t matter what you do, they’ll give you shirts and want you to sign everything.

“The second group are: ‘Okay, we’ll give you a chance and let’s see how you do. See if you win games and I’ll decide’.

“The third group, that’s the group who if you won five they’ll say you should have won seven. ‘You won 5-2? Why did you let in the two goals?’ You can never win!”

I wonder if he’s spoken to Gordon Strachan?

Oldtim

A question for those of you who have been here since the early days:

Oldtim made a significant first post on CQN but neither he nor I have a copy of it.  It was, however, copied and referred to by many in the months that followed.  If you have a copy, let me know.  Thanks.

Jimmynotpaul, great story and a good lasting memory of Billy.

My favourite moment from that game was Jim Stewart collecting the ball then our support behind the goal erupting when news came through of Albert Kidd’s first goal.

The Scotsport footage caught the moment perfectly.

A few minutes later Brian McLair asked one of the photographers behind the goal , I think it was Matt McGlone , if Dundee had scored. Brian gave a clenched fist yas when the photographer confirmed Dundee were leading.

‘Rarely Play Well At This Venue’ was the title of a much avoided bootleg of Dick Byrne and the Embrocation live at the oooooooolle Burns Howff, circa 1977.

Recorded with a Philips cassette player from the relative safety of the ladies torment, the ‘product’ consisted of thirty minutes of poorly tuned feedback, distorted vocals and numerous fights breaking out, as ole Dick struggled to beat back the hail of bottles heading in his direction with his trusty vocoder.

Afterwards, the man later dubbed the Jeremy Corbin of rock, claimed the evening had been yet another triumph.

Thanks. I’m glad you’re back posting, so I’m trying to keep you sweet. I noticed you were getting a bit narked by all the nonsense the other night.

Good story! I can tell you exactly where I was that day…in my mothers womb.

Seriously though, when I was young and learning about Celtic and our history, for some reason that day really stood out. I always remember the commentator saying ‘absolutely magnificent’ after a certain somebody scored. I always liked that colour of shirt too, it must be due a comeback.

Pourquoi les subtitles? And that is not the howff unless Kim and Aggie were in before the Corrs…….for a long time.

    .

Apparently Trainspotting was shown in the US with subtitles. With a half Scot POTUS, would they dare do the same with T2?

  19. DD is playing in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, this weeks stop on the PGA tour, he is partnering Padraig Harrington, yesterday he was shown playing a couple of shots, Nick Faldo was commenting and NF said that DD was a major shareholder in Celtic Football Club in Scotland. Think it is broadcast on CBS in America, easy publicity but useful.

  20. I was supposed to go to Germany this weekend but things changed. Presently sitting next to the fire in the pub I’m staying in having demolished a mixed grill washed down with some fine real ale. Excellent tunes in the background including The Floyd, Roxy Music and The Buzzcocks.

FFS don’t tell CRC as I’m doing the fatbhoy slim.

Big Billy ‘s mum was from Strabane.

What a woman, a second mum to me, see educated me about what was truly happening in the North. Instead of the propaganda you read in the press here.

Our scheme was rough and people used to try and taunt Billy, saying he had a hun name. He always had the perfect response, tell me the first name of the Celtic captain who lifted the big cup.

Love St Saturday….playing at Tannochside in the post Chernobyl downpour, game was halted for ten minutes due to ref wanting to abandon game, get in car and hear that Celts are winning, whilst heading back to Bellshill heat the great news from Dundee.

Back into Franklyns at Bellshill , car parked and drinking commenced….a great day.
