Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

1158

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

It is with great sadness tonight that I learned of EDB’s passing. I had the pleasure of meeting Jim on a few occasions in the flesh, but many, many times on here.

He was a real Gent and a real Celt.

Big GL2 summed Jim as well as anyone in his post earlier.

I will read back after this, but on this npage alone I see posts from quite afew CQNers I would call friends.

All united tonight in the memory of a good man.

Kerri and Meghan, I only met you both once (at CQ10) when your Dad introduced me to you, but I felt I knew you both so well, given how often he talked about you both to me. A prouder father has not walked God’s Green earth. And I say that as a Father of 4, the youngest two (my wee twins, who I know Jim talked to you about) especially, Jim’s first words comments to me were always about those two wee ghirls of mine, despite anything else. I found that very touching.

Anyway, Jim, RIP my friend. I know you will be sharing a smile, a joke, a laugh, and a song, with your wife and the CQNers who have also left this mortal coil too early.

YES. We are Celtic supporters. I think we must repay whenever possible our legends.

One of the saddest things I ever read yesterday that Tommy in the last few years struggled to pay for a TV subscription. Thanks to Winning captains for sorting it out as I understood it.

  12. The CQN f old, funny how grief brings people together.

I have fair enjoyed the blog tonight, great to see Posters record their respects to Eldiegobhoy, recount their memories of him and to see some great Posters and friends come out of the woodwork: TTTT, Minx1888, GL2 and TTT. Please do not wait until I take my leave of you before you post again…:)

Kerri and Meghan, God Bless you.

Jim Devine, the person who reinvigorated CQN, I hope so, time will tell. May God Bless your Soul.

    Keep the Faith!

    Time is a curer…….memories left behind…..

Friday night is my night, me and my Da, my pals, his pals all played snooker together. Finished that, we all went our separate ways but me and my Da always got home within half hour of each other, I’d bring in chips, he’d always have an wee half waiting and some music playing.

Just me and my bhoy this weekend, the girls are at a dancing competition in Sheffield, he’s in bed sleeping but I’m living my memories….

  15. The Token Tim on

    LennyBhoy,

Hope you are well also pal.

    Been a while.

Yep its sad, really sad that it takles the passing of a real true Gent and Celt to see so many old timers (i class myself in that even though GL2 and T4 are clearly waaaaaay older than me ) back posting. But I think that says more of EDB than anything else. Yep we all spent far too much time on CQN back in the day, but we met so many good people, and Jim was the epitome of that,

I keep popping in here, but usually get fed up and annoyed after reading no more than a dozen or so posts.

This place is far from what it was back in 2006 when I first started reading and then posting. Mores the pity.

Sad to say that CQN is very much a victim of its own success,

However I will be forever grateful for CQN fow allowing me to meet and get to know as friends so many real Celtic people. And also for what CQN has done for our community and beyond.
