Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

I’ll never forget what Tommy Burns once said to me, ‘When you become the Celtic manager, Brendan, you’re a leader of men and a leader of people,’ and I’m very proud to be here for you so thank you very much.”

I mean that it a nice way, just realising the written word wasn’t doing my thoughts justice.

H.T. Will say no surprise there.

  10. BT Fair play to your old man. 76 years young and going to Inverness on a Wednesday night to support the Celtic. Massive respect. Although TOHG could give Victor Meldrew lessons in being grumpy. Hh

I have never had the pleasure of meeting TOHG, but in the grumpy stakes it takes some going to beat that G64 Bhoy :-)

  13. Reading the recent posts about TB I recalled a family event that in my mind epitomised the man.

My dad was having his 65 birthday and we were having all the family round for a Sunday celebration.

Through a pal Tommy arrived to give my dad a present, and was we believed going to stay 15 or 20 minutes. An hour and a half later Tommy was still there, the meal had been turned off and we all listened while my dad explained to Tommy how he felt he could improve!!!

Now Tommy was just recovering from an ankle injury but nonetheless took my dad’s chat with great patience and humour, while gently winding him up in turn. Fantastic day, meal not so much!

To this day on my wall there is a photo of Tommy, my dad and me, still pride of place.

    Wonderful man taken too soon

Feels a bit like the match against us, turning on the style. Vigo just got done by that move in behind the full back from the short corner.

  15. Quiet on here tonight. I was going to post about Lisbon last night but it did not feel right.

I was hankering to get there this year and my dear lady was even positive about such a trip.

Lo and behold she even had some leave from 20th May for a week !

I sussed out a decent hotel and had flights priced on Skyscanner with alerts set for price changes. The subject of a stadium visit was agreed and I was almost considering joining the CQN group for part of the fun. You may have noticed that I stay away from the gatherings as I am not a big fan of large social events especially where I am a stranger. However Lisbon would have been an exception.

Anyway I was just about to press the “Go” button when the good lady informs me that she has had her leave days moved to the week earlier.

I was a bit miffed as to be there on the 25th would have been fantastic. So , I am now going 15th -19th from Manchester, flights are a little more expensive, hotel is same price.

All this means that I will be in the advance party and will be able to enjoy the sights and report back. To further enhance your reports I will promise not to report on any gym or cooking related activities. Looking forward to it already. HH

Was the Seabass added to your cooking ?

We had an amazing Tesco vegetable pizza, but had onion Bhajis with a tikka masala sauce & jalfrazi but don’t won’t to force grub on the wee blade, she duly obliged and dipped her pizza crusts in the masala sauce but the jalfrazi had her drinking far too much of that diluted orange juice…..if I ever win that lottery thing and have loads of time on my hands, I will be buying your cookbook

Hope Im around when we do ten in a row.BDJ will be a shrivelling wreck and they will need a straight jacket to get him in the van. He hates us so much you can taste it!!!”Had laff last week when Gerry reminded hjm Souness gave him a free transfer. OUCH!!!

  19. GFTB.

The sea bass was supposed to be the easy part! I almost ruined a lovely fish by overcooking the daft thing. It was all the lhads fault as he rang me just as I was cooking the beast.

My Vietnamese Pho , the new tricky part of the dish was a belter, even if I say so myself. The wife thought it was excellent and it goes on the list from now on.

Thanks for asking but I will not be doing a Jamie Oliver cook book, mines would be more Keith Floyd. Lots of swearing and drinking involved.

    Tommy Burns…..

We are not that far away from Tommy’s 9th anniversary, the only reason I know this is my mother who was the rock of my life, like every single others mother, passed in 2008, around March, around her birthday, around Mother’s Day, she sure we wouldn’t forget :-), anyway Tommy Burns was her Bhoy, when MoJo (that’s as polite I can be for some idiot I worshipped) got sent off in a semi final against his future employers am sure our Tommy said “would fit him better if he blessed himself in the chapel” well that was my mothers mantra, Celtic don’t pay the bills….blah, blah and blah…… My good lady was already pregnant with my wee pride and joy and although my good lady was a bit scared of my mother, my mother had more time for her than me in a very good way, anyway way point of this rubbish story is…..my amazing mother passed on 23/03/2007 her dob was 24/03/1927 and we did mourn although everyone of my pals thought her funeral was a brilliant day, obviously the Huns with their BoS / EBT sponsored squad reached Manchester then our Tommy passed……… My mother loved Tommy Burns and am more than sure Tommy would love wee Rose
