Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

1158

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

Enjoy watching the hoops with your father…. hopefully in the not too distant future MissGFTB will get the bug, it is getting closer …..she is now getting worried as my young great nephew wee Finn Michael is now appreciating Celtic at the age of nearly 2, so I think she is a bit scared in case Finn wants his great uncle Gerard to take him to Celtic Park……… :-)

Both McGinns were on SSB the other night and they were asked a few questions, by all accounts BR has already got his eye on him…… I haven’t seen much of the Bhoy but he would need to be good to threaten our midfield…… Him and his brother were great on the radio, both scared of their mother, like us all :-)

McGinn swop for McGregor? It’s a yes from me. …..and as much as I like McGregor, Mcginn is the better player.

  6. With the sad passing of Tommy and the cheating down Govan way the following is germane tae both situations.

*I was getting ready tae come back hame tae live when this game was played, in fact Mrs. TT and baby were already there. I was so desperate for a victory not just as it was against them but also to continue our fine LC winning run and hopefully tae see us at hampden again. We had lost the 1st sectional game against them so this was a winner take all match, not unlike the 1967 one.

Normally getting results meant a phone call tae one of the TO papers for “soccer scores”, but patience was not a virtue I truly possessed. We were able to purchase the Mail, Post and Weekly News every Sunday night so calculating that the final whistle had been blown I grabbed the former and looked for the phone number on it.

“Hello Record House, how can I help you”, ‘aye hen can you put me through tae the sports department please”, “what’s this about sir”, “eh I’m over here in Toronto and I want tae find the score of the night’s gemme”. “Just hold on a second”, brrr brrr brrr brrr, “sports here”, “yes it’s the switchboard, there’s a gentleman from Canada on the line wanting to know tonight’s result”, next thing I hear what must have been the phone being muffled, “hey there’s an eejit fae Canada on the line wanting tae know the night’s score”, cue for lots of laughter, back he came “Celtic won 1-0”, “Oh” quite calmly tae “who scored”, “big Gemmell”, “ya effin beauty” and at that the phone was hung up, and not by me.

I then called all my friends and family and nobody believed me as it was too early tae know, even when I told them what I had done, except my brother who knew I was daft enough tae dae that.

I finally made it hame in time for the “Harry Harry” game at the seething and frothing at the mouth dome as well as both the LC semi and replay and the Tommy Gemmell less final against the Perth Saints, all as I said earlier before I set a foot in Parkheid.

Rangers lodged a protest about the standard of the refereeing in this match (name of referee not give in this report) they claimed that Celtic’s John Hughes should have been ordered off for downing Willie Johnston in an off-the-ball incident.

*the ref was Jim Callaghan, a FIFA official who had failed tae caution the Bear after an off the ball incident with the wee Fife ned Johnston, Yogi was already on a booking. There were various reasons mooted why John acted out which are not worth commenting on but the same hay fever medicine consumer also had nice guy Jim Craig sent off as well for another off the ball incident and caused the stramash (© Arthur Montford) in the penalty area at the 1970 SC gemme.

Jim Callaghan after a witch hunt by waddell was suspended for an unprecedented 8 weeks which more or less ended his career, Sir Bob, a fair but tough disciplinarian, was furious at this and resigned from the Referees Committee immediately.

  7. I had not been a big fan of Callum’s however this season he has been a revelation. He offers us something different when trying to break down packed defences with his direct running approach and quick passing movement.

  8. Watching the hun monkey highlights. Just about the most worst decisions in refererring ever.

    Quite incredible.

  9. Good evening friends.

Michael Stewart is just about the only Scottish pundit I respect. Lets see how he comments on the Sevco Hamilton incidents….

  10. Gerryfaethebrig on

Just saw the Sevco penalty ??????

Thankfully we can now mock, my father, his father and other father’s probably faced worse decisions than the televised ones that are still a joke,……….

I know some would prefer the Plc to come out and speak but for me Peter Lawell came out and spoke fondly of Tommy Gemmell, let the Huns wallow in their own shoite…… We all know they cheated, we all know they are still trying to cheat, BUT the thing is they have “allegedly” aligned themselves to people who just chase a profit ………….. things like the Lisbon Lions, An Gorta Mor, things that means a lot too many much more important than winning any trophies …..but by all accounts The Man with No Surname thinks Celtic being so far I front is UNACCETABLE…….

Walter pay your taxes………..an EBT’er if ever there is one

I think that the club should present the Lisbon Lions with a cheque of £100k each – also the families of the Lions whom are no longer of this earth should receive said payment.

And coaches families as well, the likes of Sean Fallon etcetera.

Say 20 payments of £100k total outlay of circa £2million.

Cheap at the price in my humble opinion, considering the prestige and great publicity value they have secured for the football club since 1967.

No dis-respect to anybody, however when you take into consideration the vast wages being paid to modern day footballers, it’s only right the Lions and families should be affordable a reasonably comfortable standard of living.

A grand gesture that no Celtic supporter would surely begrudge.

  17. Been listening and reading all day about the disgusting and disgraceful blatant cheating in govan this afternoon.. Broke my promise never to watch the tax dodging scum club, but needed to see for myself how bad and how far the masonic and orange order will go to protect themselves.

And its as bad as I’ve ever witnessed. Beaton cant ever play any part in the game again and thompson as a guest on a national tv station, is as bad as it gets, he is on a par with BFD johnson, a disgrace.. and nothin will be done.

There cant ever be fair play or ethics in the sport whilst this is supported. We are a backward backwater of a Nation.

I think Brendan is right when you see all the clowns that have knighthoods the Lisbon Lions should be honoured Can we not start a petition to get something done this being a special year

*there was a move several years back tae posthumously honour the Big Mhan with a knighthood; it was just after this that the nonsense from fascist fascist emanated. As a result Jock’s family called a halt tae the move.

If we don’t go ahead this time them they’ve won.

Mags posted the other night , after Winning Captains more or less getting “our” Tommy Gemmell sky telly or whatever as one of our legends, Mags pointed out why don’t we try and find many an ex-player who has fell on hard times, and although we could all shove a couple of quid in let the PLC earn their money, mthey could probably claim it back in tax or VAT somewhere along the line……

Tommy Gemmell,God rest his soul, should have been driving about in a Ferrari as far as I’m concerned.

Sean Fallon said in his book that TG loved fast cars, one day TG arrived at the Park driving a top of the range Jaguar,a white one.

Maybe another reason why Tommy was known as Big Shot.
