Tommy Gemmell: “They’re all great goals”

1158

Tommy Jinky Dukla

The first time I met Tommy Gemmell was back in the 90s. I made a comment that some recent goal was “a great goal”. Tommy replied, “Every goal is a great goal.

“It didn’t matter who I scored against or how inconsequential the goal was, every time I put the ball in the net was a great moment.”

Tommy couldn’t hide the joy he got from doing what he did.

Some tremendous photos surfaced online yesterday, including this one (above), taken 49 years and 11 months ago, a moment after Celtic’s 0-0 draw away to Dukla Prague in the second leg of the European Cup semi-final, a result that saw Celtic progress to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

This photo took pride of place on Tommy’s memento wall at his Dunblane home. It was framed but had clearly fallen, as there was a crack in the glass. But still, its prominence outranked images from Lisbon.

For Tommy, this image captured some of the things he treasured most. His face displays sheer joy; the team have already achieved more than any other British side in reaching the final of the Continent’s top tournament.

He’s carrying his great pal, Jimmy Johnstone, like a child, on his hip. It defines their achievement, friendship and an unfettered happiness.  If you ever had a photo like this of yourself, it would be on your wall too.

I’m pleased our next game is at Celtic Park. Many of us want to be there.

I was marginally too young to go to the Bobby Davidson Roadshow in 1970.

It sure made a mark on wur guid pal,JIMBO67 though. Scarred for life,or taught early? You decide.

Wee Jimmy getting sent off v Aberdeen for having the temerity to wear The Hoooooops, that did it for me. And don’t even ask me about the John Doyle one at Ayr. My Uncle Billy,season-ticket holder all his life at Somerset Park, took me there that day. None of his pals could believe that decision.

One of them said-wouldnae have happened if he’d still been playing for us!

    Petec and 16,

    In fabulous form tonight.

The Shinners making the final push for takeover and you aint seen nothing yet.

The endgame is coming for the dinosaurs.

A massive vote from teenage voters to mid twenty or so ones was the big factor.

    Especially in Doire.

Their day is most definitely coming -and they know it..

The Hamilton manager, while saying there should have been two reds and no pen, said that he refuses to criticise the officials as they have a difficult job. Then went in about his team’s mistakes at defending corners.

On Honours, Tommy spoke about this on CQN last year re Jock Stein not being honoured and how wrong that was.

Would be worth it to see John Fallon and Charlie Gallagher’s faces when they heard they were off to the Palace!!!

The Tommy Gemmell CSC wil be putting down a European Cup at 11.30am tomorrow outside Celtic Park.

I’d like us to organise something for the Lions – have actually been working on it for quite a while but wasn’t sure if it was going to happen. I have been speaking to Willie Wallace about it. Hopefully will be in a better position to express my thoughts after next week.

    Winning Captains,

Canning hasn’t the balls then to challenge the biggest farce in Scottish football this season.

Garner runs and measures a kick directly to a player’s backside and the Hun keeper blatantly grabs the ball outside the box and all is well?

What a farce of a country.

I hope Canning gets the bag and they get relegated.

Spot on!! Spineless and gutless Canning. How did you expect your team to react.. they were well in it till the ‘penalty’ then the goalkeeper doing as he pleases.

I had a wee soft spot for the Accies, but hope they get the same treatment in the relegation play-off.

I’m barred from Celtic games in Autumn thanks to the Accies.

I rarely get the chance to attend. I grab them with both hands. I don’t care who we’re playing,I’m not picky.

I just know WE are playing!

    So…

The year after witnessing our dismal display against Morton,I duly turned up against Hamilton.

My kid sis told me on the way back that I was barred. I bartered it down to Autumn only. Got off lightly,I wouldnae like to take back a burst pay-poke to that yin!

The rest of Scottish football stands up in resistance to Sevco’s, the SFA’s and the SPFL’s attempts to turn the game into a farce up here, of course.

So many are saying it. I hope it happens.

It is MEGA TOUGH to get into a Brendan Midfield.

And going to be even harder next Season.

  27. Well, it’s like this…..

If, Martin Canning was just a wee bit more, canny…..and called out the MIBs,….well, he might just end up with the Scotland managers job!

Seemed tae work out that way for big Levine….the only way to stop CL from highlighting the mibbery was to, bring him ‘inside’ the SFA tent!

In other news…..John McGinn seems to be a mix of – John Collins / Roy Keane – imho

BTW, am a wee bit concerned about Neil Francis Lennon’s ability for getting his teams up for ‘big’ games!
