Tommy had died. For the staff, it was too much for us.

192

There was a profound poignancy rather than exhilaration because Tommy Burns had died a week earlier, with the funeral taking place two days before the game.  After the title had been won, the Celtic squad re-emerged in T-shirts bearing his image.

Strachan had a cuppa.  ‘I am a tea addict,’ he says.  ‘I’ll only drink on special occasions.  After that I thought, “Right.  It’s been a real hard year.”  I wanted to make sure my family were all right because they were at the game.  The woman who is always there offered me a cup of tea.  Tommy had died.  I had to celebrate but I didn’t feel like celebrating.  For the staff, it was too much for us.

Strachan would also say that ‘being Tommy’s mate was the best part of joining Celtic’.

Tommy you brought happiness to us all at the club

You are so much missed and loved

    Hail Hail

  2. I was at a doo in Govanhill just after Tommy was named as Celtic manager, he hadn’t even managed a game yet. Might of been his niece’s wedding I cant remember. Everyone was shaking his hand and congratulating him. My then girlfriend slagged me rotten because I couldn’t go up and talk to him, I was just in awe and didn’t know what I would say. It takes a lot to impress me and I am not easily starstruck but this was thee Tommy Burns.

at only 5’10” he is too small for me – hence his price tag i think…. epl sides will be looking at considerably bigger guys to play in the centre back slots. SPL sides throw a single big striker against us repeatedly, and manage to rag-doll our back 2. We need someone with the size and strength to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Couldn`t agree more, well said. Absolutely loved Tommy Burns.

    Two of our very finest.

    Bobby

TheLisbon Lions players themselves (including Jimmy Johnstone who was voted “The Greatest Ever Celtic Player”) generally held the opinion that Bobby Murdoch was the best footballer of the Lisbon Lions.

  10. I can recall playing for St Marys (Calton) Boys Guild under the watchful eye of wee John Rice, Tommy would sometimes pop along and watch one of the teams in the old “Gravy” behind St Marys Chapel, always a kind word for whomever was playing, indeed for whomever was there, every year hed be there at the end of season dance, never failed to show, in hindsight Tommy probably selected the date of the dance to ensure it never clashed with any formal Club committments, Tommy never forgot his Calton roots, he never forgot the “Mary of the Calton” as we were called, hed cringe with embarrassment when John Rice used Tommy as a role model for us,

Tommy was Tommy no matter whose company he was in, Tommy never changed a bit, and why should he have?

    You dont change perfection.

    Sleep well Tam.

  11. Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland have formally declared an interest in hosting Euro 2020.

The countries have told Uefa that they would be interested in bidding to host the European Championships on a three-way basis.

So far Turkey are the only other nation to inform Uefa that they want to want host the tournament.

A source close to Uefa has confirmed that a written expression of interest from the three ‘Celtic’ countries has been submitted to the European governing body.

Uefa have a deadline of midnight tonight for any other declarations of interest.

Bidders would need to put forward up to 10 stadiums to host matches in the European Championships, which is being expanded from 16 teams to 24 from 2016.

I would imagine Scotland will be told to p*** off by Uefa if Newco are given an easy ride.

  13. On the subject of defenders – the rennes skipper Mangane looked the real deal against us. Capable of scoring goals, great in the air, and like most players in France…. can really play. I can’t imagine Rennes would be a much bigger draw than Celtic. Additionally, he has 20-odd caps for Senegal – despite them being very strong in defence – they have the stoke city guys etc to choose from as well. He is 29, so if this is deemed ‘to old’ the Club could look at his compatriot – Moustapha Bayal Sall ‎another big bruiser from Senegal, playing for St Etienne (26).

French League for me is full of good athletes with top skill levels, honed in the excellent academies and training facilities that many French clubs have. The epl sides are quick to scout there – and there is a reason for that.

Rumor from Spain, the Celtic side, Emilio Izaguirre (26), could reach an agreement with Manchester United for the next market window. The Honduran is seen as a possible replacement for Patrice Evra (31).

  16. Celtic have made a bid for Leicester City’s out-of-favour former captain Matt Mills.

The Scottish champions are offering defender Kelvin Wilson in a possible swap deal.

The Hoops are understood to have made City the offer of 26-year-old Wilson in exchange for Mills, who appears to have no future at City under manager Nigel Pearson.

Right-back Lee Peltier could also be on his way out of the King Power Stadium after talks over a new contract stalled.

Although he still has two years of his current deal to run, Peltier could be one of the victims of a summer clear-out, despite only joining City last summer from Huddersfield Town and becoming the first-choice right-back.

Mills was Sven-Goran Eriksson’s big summer signing last year, arriving from Reading in a deal that was potentially worth close to £5 million.

However, after the sacking of Eriksson, Mills failed to impress new boss Pearson.

The City manager is looking to carry out a big reconstruction of his squad this summer in a bid to turn the team into genuine promotion challengers after a disappointing campaign.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has denied, in the Scottish media, that there has been contact with City about Wilson.

But the Mercury understands he is keen to land Mills and is prepared to offer Wilson in exchange.

Wilson has had a difficult first season for Celtic since arriving on a free transfer and has made just 21 appearances, mainly due to a torn Achilles heel injury, which kept him out of action for more than three months last year.

My favourite memory of Tommy was after the Scottish cup win in 88,he walked right up to the Celtic end with a hat on and took a ‘Shakespearean’ bow removing the hat to the fans and had Tommy been a manager anywhere else than a Scotland which was desperate for the huns to match our our 9,he would have been more successful bit of course everybody can see that now given current events.

  18. Stringer Bell on

My fav every TB quote came amidst the furore around the signing of Maurice Johnston.

TB said he couldn’t understand why he had signed for rangers, but then said I am in no position to pass judgement, as many are doing. I am not a good enough person myself to pass any judgements on others.

At that time, possibly the only reasoned response I heard.

Great Tommy Burns memory after the Cup final in the Centenary season, interviewed on the pitch by Jim White, and talked about going up to the hospital to visit a young kid who was sick. The same interview where he’s asked about the support and he says ‘they’re there and they’re always there, and God bless every one of them’

An educated left foot used to mean one that the player had trained himself to use, in addition to his natural right foot. In other words, if you were a naturally left-footed player, you had no need to educate your left foot.

Of course, if you do this for a living, you should be able to use both feet, but somehow this basic requirement seems to evade even guys who are millionaires thanks to football.

Why does no one ever talk about an educated right foot?

The meaning seems to have become changed somewhere along the way.
