Tomorrow will indicate Celtic’s true position

271

Since ending their league season on 23 December, Bodo/Glimt have played three friendlies: a draw with Dinamo Kiev, and wins over Denmark’s AGF and Sweden’s Elfdborg, all played in Spain, each opponent is also preseason.  Their next two outings are against Celtic, both should be exhausting encounters for the Norwegians.

You and I have watched enough preseason European football to know what a task this will be for Bodo/Glimt.  Take nothing for granted, though.  Two years ago, after finishing top of our Europa League group, we faced preseason Copenhagen.  A draw in the first leg in Denmark was not enough.  The Danes, who should have ran out of juice before Celtic, scored twice in the closing minutes at Celtic Park to progress.  Norwegian sides have done well over five visits to Celtic Park in the last six years, Rosenborg drew twice and lost twice, while Molde won.

Celtic fans are full of confidence right now.  What we are missing is a test against non-Scottish opposition.  Drubbing a limp Newco gave us hope that we are watching something special.  Tomorrow night will give an indication as to whether that hope is valid.  I expect a far tougher examination.

  2. The ersewipe / tax gymnast commonly known as JC and his convoluted Holocaust joke narrative.

Very typical of today’s edgy comedians / influencers in that he talks about Nazi crimes / mass murder but forgets to mention the tip of the spear regarding the death cult they implemented throughout their time in power.

No mention of the Marxists / Communists / Socialists / Social democrats that were massacred in the 30’s.

Is progressive politics being airbrushed out of the narrative?

Started with the JS was as bad as AH angle and now it seems to be moving on to democratic politicians.

4 clean sheets from the last 5 games.

We’ve not been beaten by anyone except for the second highest scoring team in the bundesliga in over 30 games.

It is not the goals we let in that are important.

It is the chances we give away that are the true mark of the team’s character.

Chances given away to low ambition SPL teams / SCh teams are one thing.

The same chances given away to confident / capable teams are another — they will lead to goals.

We are not a settled team — anxiety / fear ripples through the team from time to time.

We need to work our way through this and capitalise on the talent we have.

  9. Troll vs Deranged ersewipe — Discuss?

A troll never offers up anything positive / creative / constructive.

A deranged ersewipe will from time to time generate something different but generally agreeable.

They will regret it and then over compensate but it will happen.

My money is on troll for one hyper active poster.

And deranged ersewipe for our other hyperactive poster.

  11. Superbru update

This round finished with last night’s Aberdeen game and saw first place being shared by Jonny the Tim and Gene on 12.5 points. 3rd place with 11 points was One Malloy. At the bottom Hutchbhoy and Knoxy both scored one point but the programme has awarded the wooden spoon to Hutchybhoy.

Overall, Call me Gerry is increasing his lead, which is now a full 8 points on 169.5 (he’ll be selling us tips soon). Hopeful Hoops is clear in 2nd, 5 points clear of Gene who has claimed a podium spot in 3rd, jumping up 4 places (hope for everyone there).

At the bottom , a few irregular predictors are breaking clear (wee BGFC , Chalmersbhoy, Scaniel and BGFC) and keeping McCaff off the bottom spot.

Next predictions are due in on Saturday at 3 pm when 4 of the 6 fixtures take place.

  12. T7 / Toaty Trumper @ volley posting / fools never differ central

Neither — other’s have taken up the mantles before I could get a word in edgeways.

And then there are the other scourges of the blog — Tartan Tories and Square Mile bean counters.

Each special in their own little way.

  13. High season, low season or pre-season it doesn’t matter these Norwegians will be the usual slick passing, difficult to beat outfit. Doubt if Celtic will take anything for granted tomorrow night. It took a long time to get over that defeat to a supposedly unfit, lacking game time, Copenhagen. They may have beaten Roma but Celtic have also taken some even bigger scalps in their time.

  14. AIPPLE,

I live on the west coast. Wild here. I have been looking forward to tomorrow’s game for quite a while. I am seriously considering not going to Glasgow, as I had planned to stay the night and drive back on Friday morning. It seems that the next storm is to be on Friday and it will be blizzards, rather than wind.

  16. I’m a bit puzzled by those posters who continually tell us that the league is a priority without any expansion.

If at the end of the season, the only other silverware we get is being champions, then most here will be delighted.

But what about the other 2 competitions we are in. Does anybody here want us to deliberately lose these ties so we can concentrate on the league. Should we play an under strength side which will shorten the odds on a defeat. Does anybody here really want to see us lose any game.

If we have a realistic chance of winning any trophy then we should compete to win. We might not win a quadruple this year but it is still a not unrealistic possibility

  17. St Stivs – that’s the 67 LC Final – we won 5-3 and it was a nice day – I missed it!

The 73 final we lost 0-1 – it was freezing and sleeting – I was there

I jinxed the team and the weather

  18. Although the LEAGUE is obviously my priority for Celtic. I couldnt resist putting a couple of Quid on Celtic to WIN The Europa Conference @ Odds of 20/1.

Bigger Odds may be available elsewhere ?

I’m in the southside it is pretty bad but as I understand it places are closing more due to possible travel difficulties than the actual danger posed by the weather.

I’m supposed to be flying in tomorrow and back out Fr morning. Flights seem to be still operating in high wind today and the forecast is for a ‘stiff breeze the next 2 days but snow on Fri

I think i’ll get in and out OK but if driving, it is the snow forecast you’d want to watch for , as you say.

Might bring the work laptop just in case i get stuck or big delays

  21. Celtic @ 20/1 to WIN The Europa conference League……

Or opponents Tomorrow night BODO GLIMT…are Priced at Odds of 40/1…with the same Bookie.

    Funny that ?

  22. I want us to go as far as we can in the 3rd tier competition for Europe, simply its experience and money and fame. There are some big names in the competition yet, so why not give it a bash.

Next up though, the price of tickets was a bit hefty, and the club could have capped the prices some to thank people for all the support.

Back to the champions league, as much as there are relative fortunes to be cashed in just by qualifying, I couldnt help but have a wee shudder watching Man City last night and thinking again of our last thumpings in the group stages.

Then again, the disco lights dont pay for themselves.

  23. CLINKO

It’s the modern day Celtic supporter. The league has always been our priority, ever since the inception of European football in 1955. It’s only in recent years that “the league is the priority” has come to mean – forget the rest and field weakened teams so we get knocked out.

It’s the philosophy of the feart and the weak.

    It’s pathetic.

  24. St Stivs

Great photo, never seen that before. What’s strange is how long the grass is, although I suppose it makes a change as you see from films and photos of the time for most of the season there was almost no grass, just mud or dust
