Tomorrow will indicate Celtic’s true position

271

Since ending their league season on 23 December, Bodo/Glimt have played three friendlies: a draw with Dinamo Kiev, and wins over Denmark’s AGF and Sweden’s Elfdborg, all played in Spain, each opponent is also preseason.  Their next two outings are against Celtic, both should be exhausting encounters for the Norwegians.

You and I have watched enough preseason European football to know what a task this will be for Bodo/Glimt.  Take nothing for granted, though.  Two years ago, after finishing top of our Europa League group, we faced preseason Copenhagen.  A draw in the first leg in Denmark was not enough.  The Danes, who should have ran out of juice before Celtic, scored twice in the closing minutes at Celtic Park to progress.  Norwegian sides have done well over five visits to Celtic Park in the last six years, Rosenborg drew twice and lost twice, while Molde won.

Celtic fans are full of confidence right now.  What we are missing is a test against non-Scottish opposition.  Drubbing a limp Newco gave us hope that we are watching something special.  Tomorrow night will give an indication as to whether that hope is valid.  I expect a far tougher examination.

  1. I was once at a business meeting that included George Foulston, who was chairman of Falkirk FC at the time. Much wine was taken and after a while Foulston looked at my name tag – TOM – and asked for my surname. When I told him, he looked at me and said, “I fucking hate Jacobites.”

  2. I met David Murray when he owned the Norton House Hotel in Edinburgh.

  9. Burnley78 at 8.16. In the last of the three league games at Ibrox in 1983 I still to this day don’t know how the late Brian Whittaker was not sent off after clattering Sandy Clark then not long after , kicking his former Thistle team mate , Davie Mackinnon , off the ball.

It was Brian’s best game for us.

Couple things leapt out at me; SMT at Anderson bus station, the Plaza on the soothside and pale blue ‘invalid cars’ (as they were dubbed at the time). As a kid I always wanted a go in one just to see how they handled. BUCKETLISTCSC

I’ve said the domestic league is the most important thing, specifically cos it would deny the Zombies automatic ChampsLeague entry next year, with all its wedge and crowing rights.

Commercially, it would prob suit our Execs fine, if we were to win the Scottish Cup, AND make the advanced stages of the Nuevo Intertoto and finish a narrow league 2nd to the currants (who desperately need wonga to sustain their very existence and provide a home-based point of competition).

Obv I want us to win every game. But I most want a league pennant this term.
