Tonev and racism in Scottish football

1193

I’m not about to give you a character reference for Aleksandar Tonev, he may be prone to racist outburst, for all I know.  Society, and therefore football, still has a racism problem, just read how coolly Luis Suarez played addressing an opponent as “negro”.  The game has to react firmly when presented with racist banners, which regularly appear in Eastern Europe.

On the balance of probabilities, would a born-and-bred Scottish international be judged to have made a racist remark during a game against an opponent he doesn’t share a common tongue with?

If Kenny Miller was similarly accused and claimed to be misquoted, how would you feel?  Scottish footballers just don’t have a history of this kind of remark; I’d be inclined to believe Miller.  So, I expect, would Scottish football.

Tonev comes from one of those Eastern European countries.  Scottish football acknowledged it had no evidence to act on but found him guilty.

Based in just as little evidence, could you please decide if Scottish football is guilty of racist generalisation in its handling of this matter?  I know you don’t have enough evidence to come to a proper decision, but that’s the point.

Maybe if Aleks was at Ibrox on Tuesday making flute band gestures to TV cameras at halftime, the like of which Scottish Government minster Roseanna Cunningham once insisted was unacceptable and illegal, we’d all realise he didn’t mean any harm.  Or was it just the Sign of the Cross, Ms Cunningham?

But Tonev’s not “one of us”, so who cares?

The auction for two debenture hospitality seats, which started our bid to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals ended a few minutes ago.  Thanks to everyone who bid, the winner paid £295, a fantastic gesture.  Thanks also to Celtic sponsor, Magners, for pulling things together for us and making it happen.

We have a couple of slightly less-illustrious premium seats for tomorrow in the Jock Stein stand from Magners, which you can win by answering the following question:

Which team do Celtic play tomorrow?

This competition is only open for an hour, closes at 2:0, so those who enter have an excellent chance.  Keep an eye on your inbox this afteroon.  If you’d like to donate £1 to the kitchen fund in tandem with your entry, you can do so here.

Terms and Conditions apply.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

It’s a great read, you’ll enjoy it.

    Surely Tonev has enough to sue for defamation?

    7 games with no precedent and no rules to support it. One players word against another.

    Anyone would think the SFA deliberately appoint lawyers with Timmy sounding names as sectarian Teflon.

    Lawyers will make arguments for whatever their client wants to hear. In this case there is no legal recourse other than an appeal to the same kangaroo court.

    Did they take up character references or just look at who had the darkest skin tone then spin the ban wheel till Jim Farrys ghost stopped it at 7?

    Tonev could quite easily have stated in defence that he was called a gypo B or a tinker in return.

    I wonder what the PFA will have to say.

    Mind you there’s nothing like a siege mentality to create a crowd.

    Wait till next season and pie eating mockery will result in 10 lashes from the grand master.

    I see someone has had the temerity to put together a hijab with Poppy’s on it. At least that takes some of the focus off us around this team of year which seems to be more commonly known as Anti Tim fest.

    Is it the homo erotic fantasies of war combined with the Harvest moon that bring it out this team of year?

  5. If Diarra is half as good as he used to be,we will be getting a star.Used to love watching this guy when he was playing at his best.Terrific player.Always stuck out for me.

    Lets hope.

    If Tonev did say the words that have been mentioned on here,then I dont think they could be picked up differently.Then again,dont know how accurate this post is,but the C word is not a word used by many people outside of the UK.

  6. ***Lunchtime Quiz***

    So I was speaking to a happy ‘Hammer’ when in Londonia this week and he informed me that Brother Walfrid had a hand in founding his beloved West Ham.

    As it goes, in 1893 Brother Walfrid was sent by his religious order to London’s East End where he continued his work, organizing football matches. Of the teams he helped establish was Thames Ironworks FC who later went on to become West Ham.

    This got us talking about other connections between our respective beloved teams.

    So, after that long winded introduction, I am looking for footballers who have played for both Celtic and West Ham (we came up with 11).

    ***The rules of the game are always the same. No search engines please, you’re only cheating yourself***

  7. The SFA hearing listened to evidence from the Aberdeen manager and captain as well as the referee, presumably to confirm that Logan did indeed bring the alleged racist remarks to their attention as soon as it happened.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Awe well that’s it then he’s guilty :( …..God give me strength.
    When you are fit I’ll treat you to a round at a great course in Linlithgow called Kingsfield.
    About 5 years old, not too long but the shorter holes are into the prevailing wind.
    Greens are St Andrewesque and the downside is, bring a lot of balls.
    The rough is tough and the bunkers are deep.
    Our own Steven Gallagher was involved with the initial design.
    A very pleasant walk too!
    when reffering to Tonec you envisage the authorities might have thought
    Uefa are demanding 10 game bans for racIst offences. It is the SFAs way of demonstrating that they dont let everybody off.
    12.6.1 A Tribunal is not required to issue reasons, unless requested
    (i) by a Party pursuant to Paragraph 12.6.2 below; or
    (ii) by the Scottish FA.
    12.6.2 A Party may, by not later than three Working Days after the date on which the Determination was communicated or delivered to that Party, request that a First Instance Tribunal issue reasons.
  17. I don’t quite agree with Paul’s analysis on the Tonev thing.
    Heres my take.
    I agree there was no evidence to convict when you are faced with a one wod against the other situation.
    So we are dealing with probabilities.
    Is it more likely Tonev given his cultural background outlined by Paul made a racist remark than Shay Logan fabricated an accusation against an opponent?
    I think the answer to this question has led to the 7 match ban. A brave decision but one that sends a message I agree with.
    For me – Id be happy if the player was returned to Villa.
  18. EUFA may find themselves in it sooner than they think, if I was 100% that I was being wrongfully accused I’d be suing everyone and their granny, who where accusing me, no danger.
    Its a curious link and one which has me wondering.
    I wont have watched the guy just as closely as you, but with Charlie being deployed as the holding midfielder and given instruction to link defence and midfield I am hoping Ronnie sees what I see – hes not very good at that job.
    So looking outside the box to try and find a solution is pleasing in one respect however I hope that considering a signing who will be 4-6 weeks away from match fitness which is a few weeks shy of the transfer window isnt selling ourselves short
