Tonev and racism in Scottish football

1193

I’m not about to give you a character reference for Aleksandar Tonev, he may be prone to racist outburst, for all I know.  Society, and therefore football, still has a racism problem, just read how coolly Luis Suarez played addressing an opponent as “negro”.  The game has to react firmly when presented with racist banners, which regularly appear in Eastern Europe.

On the balance of probabilities, would a born-and-bred Scottish international be judged to have made a racist remark during a game against an opponent he doesn’t share a common tongue with?

If Kenny Miller was similarly accused and claimed to be misquoted, how would you feel?  Scottish footballers just don’t have a history of this kind of remark; I’d be inclined to believe Miller.  So, I expect, would Scottish football.

Tonev comes from one of those Eastern European countries.  Scottish football acknowledged it had no evidence to act on but found him guilty.

Based in just as little evidence, could you please decide if Scottish football is guilty of racist generalisation in its handling of this matter?  I know you don’t have enough evidence to come to a proper decision, but that’s the point.

Maybe if Aleks was at Ibrox on Tuesday making flute band gestures to TV cameras at halftime, the like of which Scottish Government minster Roseanna Cunningham once insisted was unacceptable and illegal, we’d all realise he didn’t mean any harm.  Or was it just the Sign of the Cross, Ms Cunningham?

But Tonev’s not “one of us”, so who cares?

The auction for two debenture hospitality seats, which started our bid to build a fourth school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals ended a few minutes ago.  Thanks to everyone who bid, the winner paid £295, a fantastic gesture.  Thanks also to Celtic sponsor, Magners, for pulling things together for us and making it happen.

We have a couple of slightly less-illustrious premium seats for tomorrow in the Jock Stein stand from Magners, which you can win by answering the following question:

Which team do Celtic play tomorrow?

This competition is only open for an hour, closes at 2:0, so those who enter have an excellent chance.  Keep an eye on your inbox this afteroon.  If you’d like to donate £1 to the kitchen fund in tandem with your entry, you can do so here.

Terms and Conditions apply.

You can get copies of Caesar & the Assassin, Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s accounts of managing Celtic from Jock Stein’s departure until the appointment of Liam Brady, signed by both Billy and Davie here.

It’s a great read, you’ll enjoy it.

I expected a not proven but that would still have left stink.

My point is unfortunate though it is for Tonev (especially if innocent) Celtic don’t needthe hassle…so returning the player strikes news the best move for Celtic

I have been to Nairobi. I was part of a charity group building a school called St Andrews in the Ngong Hills.

I stayed in a University Campus in the Karen district.

    Accomodation was at NEGST.

I went to mass at the church there on a Sunday and for my ashes as I was staying over February. The priest at that time was trained at the Scots college and I handed in a rake of Celtic tops. This was pre Wanyama so I managed to spot a few before I left. I reckon I had around 60 jerseys.

We managed to get a few days off and headed down to Amboseli National Park and went on some game drives. Really tremendous to wake up and see Kilimajaro and a rake of animals each morning.

It’s a cracking place Kenya. Never felt in any danger.

A drive up the the hills near the rift valley is worth a look too. Breathtaking.

In Kenya, the valley is deepest to the north of Nairobi. As the lakes in the Eastern Rift have no outlet to the sea and tend to be shallow, they have a high mineral content as the evaporation of water leaves the salts behind. For example, Lake Magadi has high concentrations of soda (sodium carbonate) and Lake Elmenteita, Lake Bogoria, and Lake Nakuru are all strongly alkaline, while the freshwater springs supplying Lake Naivasha are essential to support its current biological variety.

Hope your daughter enjoys the experience.

By far the best thing about Africa is the people. They are superb people and that trip was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

“Is it more likely Tonev given his cultural background outlined by Paul made a racist remark than Shay Logan fabricated an accusation against an opponent?”

    Neither.

There is absolutely no statistical evidence to support either of the three contentions at play here, 0ne of which you ignored. Those 3 contentions are:-

Bulgarian players are likely to be prone to racist comments

UK born players from ethnic minorities are unlikely to make false accusations of racism

Logan can be 100% sure of what was said if there is no corroboration

The evidence of both parties can be heard and you might have a gut sensation that Logan is trustworthy and honest in delivering his whilst Tonev is shifty and evasive in delivering his. You could still not deduce that one was right and one was wrong. You can only deduce that one was convinced by what he heard and the other was unconvincing but that could be due to English not being his first language, being nervous as he was the accused in this case, or even just nerves at having his career threatened by an unjust accusation.

It is a good thing that complaints of racism are taken seriously.

It is never a good thing for a possibly innocent man to be found guilty in order to impress other as to how seriously the issue is taken.

  14. The SFA have been a kangaroo court for as long as I can remember, so to put a young man’s livelyhood at risk on a he said, he said, as far as I’m concerned is not on, it’s a bad precedent to set and bang out of order, how they can come to that decision without no evidence at all beggars believe, the public need to know, clarify what went on and how they got there, this is no longer a secret society as it was back in the day, let us all know and then we can all move on.

  15. Cultsbhoy,

John Collins attended the hearing with Tonev and Celtic are supporting the appeal. I think the point is bigger than just the player himself. It wouldn’t disappoint me to see him return to AV – but not for the same reason as yourself.

  19. Don’t think there is an easy way to go with this

The nature of the accusation doesn’t lend itself to cast-iron proof. If you only convicted when 100% proven then it would be pretty easy to get away with it.

Honestly never felt in any danger.

I did head off with a small group to buy materials. We rolled up with our guide to what can only be described as a wild west style shop which sold all your DIY needs. I had about £200 on me. The whole village started to appear as I approached the store on foot from our vehicle. I went in and bought brushes about 20 litres of paint and various other utensils for digging the grounds and a few other things. I had a few quid left over and crossed the road and bought a beer for me and my guide and big bags of sweets and handed them out to everyone who wanted one.

Just sitting enjoying a cool Tuskers whilst watching the world go by was a nice chilling experience. All the kids helped us to the vehicle with all the purchases and then I had a scramble.

Not sure if any of it was PC in their customs but sometimes you do what you feel is right.

I have never seen happier people and 99% of them have nothing. A sobering experience.
