Tonev arrives after a season long chase

795

A year after trying and failing to sign him from Lech Poznan, Celtic have secured the services of Aleksandar Tonev from Aston Villa.  Tonev has blistering pace, a right footer who is usually used on the left, he is an archetypal counter-attacking player.

The player’s profile blossomed during the first six months of 2013, in particular after he scored a hat-trick for Bulgaria against Malta, which brought Villa and Celtic to the table.  The step-up to the English Premier League from playing a speciality role for Poznan was, not surprisingly, too much.

Aleksandar plays the same position as Georgios Samaras, albeit he’s a completely different type of player, but we will look to him to do the same job – be an out ball away from home in Europe.

Ronny will have seen him only from DVDs, so he’ll be keen to get him onto the pitch tomorrow morning for a run-out ahead of St Johnstone.  Let’s hope the manager likes what he sees….  It’s a worry. The most promising part of deal is that Aleksandar has a point to prove, I’d rather hungry players with a point to prove than those who’ve too much on the clock.

Welcome to Celtic, Aleks.

    HT – from previous:

I know where you’re coming from pal, I personally think we should give Griffith a chance first. I think we need to bring in someone better than both of them and money spent on May would reduce our chances of that. His signing would also probably have ended the search for another striker altogether, leaving us with what we have plus May, which I don’t think would be enough. It was a cheap shot, I accept that, but I feel you seem distraught over the loss of a guy we could & should be aiming higher than.

    —–

I’m not distraught at all it just seemed a common sense signing. The reason for that is because I don’t see us getting anyone as good for that money.

I think May went for around £800k do you think we’ll spend more than that on a striker in this window, I certainly don’t?

Aye we are all ok, It’s the livestock that is suffering. We had to transfer pregnant cows this morning as the weather is too severe to allow them to calf safely and the poultry were going mental with the wind and rain, apart from the ducks of course. All in all a disaster of a day. But hey ho, back to CP on saturday is enough to cheer anybody, well almost anybody, up. :-)))

My above post was from Phil’s Twitter, …….. Meant to state that above

  5. We can still sign one more player for the Maribor games up to 48 hours before first leg. We won’t, but the option is there.

Two loan deals and a free for a team totally out of its depth in the 3rd qualifying round to try to win the play off round.

It’s obvious no money will be spent until we know if we’re in CL or EL and when we do spend it’ll be like last summer’s last minute scramble.

“This guy is a creative player and couldn’t get a game for the most uncreative team in the EPL last season.”

Don’t you think this might have been the problem?

  7. I no longer feel annoyed. Rather I find myself numb. I do believe our current custodians ar destroying us.

From Paul’s quote the truth that I have espoused become real. This guy wasn’t ronnys signing. In fact none of them are.

At some point this will come crashing down. I just ish we collectively could fix it before it happens.

This has JP and PL paws all over it which is worrying and even more worryingly I think Ronny will be the type of manager who will be happy to work with the tools he has been given.

Guaranteed income including £2 million to Newcastle £9.2 million. Outgoing spend for CL two campaigns in one year

    – nil.

Take that to the bank (they will you know )

  12. When the PLC sell our best players, keep the money, then replace with loan players.

Why would anybody be surprised that they are getting so much stick.

Wtf are they doing with the money?

Why spout nonsense about investing transfer money, when its obvious, that’s not happening.

Do the PLC think we are fecking daft or what?

Or is it all my fault because im ranting?

No responsibility for failure, as a strategy, is total bs.

  19. I suppose the other way of looking at it is why would you spend good money on players recommended by a scouting system that thought £6-7m on Balde, Pukki & Boeriggter was a good idea. At least when your flops are either frees or loanees then it doesn’t feel so bad!!

  20. Martybhoy

I fear you’re right. To be honest I wouldn’t mind that if he turns out to be a really quality coach.

  21. Doc

I’d go in and get them for you but I won’t have a spare minute until tomorrow night by which time it’ll be too late.
