Tonev arrives after a season long chase

795

A year after trying and failing to sign him from Lech Poznan, Celtic have secured the services of Aleksandar Tonev from Aston Villa.  Tonev has blistering pace, a right footer who is usually used on the left, he is an archetypal counter-attacking player.

The player’s profile blossomed during the first six months of 2013, in particular after he scored a hat-trick for Bulgaria against Malta, which brought Villa and Celtic to the table.  The step-up to the English Premier League from playing a speciality role for Poznan was, not surprisingly, too much.

Aleksandar plays the same position as Georgios Samaras, albeit he’s a completely different type of player, but we will look to him to do the same job – be an out ball away from home in Europe.

Ronny will have seen him only from DVDs, so he’ll be keen to get him onto the pitch tomorrow morning for a run-out ahead of St Johnstone.  Let’s hope the manager likes what he sees….  It’s a worry. The most promising part of deal is that Aleksandar has a point to prove, I’d rather hungry players with a point to prove than those who’ve too much on the clock.

Welcome to Celtic, Aleks.

  1. Kojo,

When I read your submissions, I realise I’m not mental.

    Powerful stuff.

    Every post is powerful.

I thank you for what you do.

I will definitely disagree with you a lot, especially re-incarnation and all that NONSENSE, I’m a hardcore adherent that….. ;)))

    No chance

Fair enough, I don’t see the the Board being unhappy with Peter.

    !!Bada Bing!!

so you agree your statement was missing vital information lol? It’s the way it done, there’s a pull of players, managers choose from the scouts’ lists.

It’s a great alternative to Harry Redknapp signing players for a bung (allegedly), we were burned with that too, don’t tell me Kenny Dal didn’t get bung for the Scheidt deal. (allegedly)

This way the club can say to the supporters and shareholders that each of the players has been personally scouted probabaly on more than one match, reports written, recorded on dvds and more than one person has had input on the signing. Which for me is better than “Match of the day” scouting.

  3. I’ve no problem with John Park identifying possible signing targets, I’d imagine that’s in the remit of most scouts at football clubs.

The problem is IF he has the final say on which players come into the club even over riding the wishes of the manager.

The support will walk, that is for sure, an empty CP will say more about the policy than anything else.

Listen, In the main I am behind the policy the suits have embarked on, it’s just not flexible enough.

Kris Commons is the prime example, no sell on value, but is doing a job for us, plenty more like him, and they are what we need presently.

Thanks. But you get my point, (which wasn’t that we should play the bhoy against Maribor)

    :o)

As for millions in the bank and no one signed etc, perhaps the money is not the real problem. We have just been rejected by someone (Jeff Louis) we had never heard of earlier in the month so that he could turn out for Standard Liege. Last year at this time, Tonev chose Aston Villa over us, where he had no chance of playing CL football. This pattern is repeated every transfer window – players usually wait to see if they get a better offer. In that sense, it’s like picking sides for a game in the playground at school. The best were picked first and so on.. until one captain was left with the last guy standing as his

Scottish football at it’s highest level is not a packed Celtic Park, rather it is New Douglas Park, Ross County, Caley Thistle, St Mirren. That is the reality that is compounded by the SFA/SPFL’s complete failure to properly market our game to any television audience. The Scottish football product is poor, the image is worse, and clubs’ ineptitude in Europe shows players that our league is best avoided. This is a vicious downward spiral and we are caught in the middle of it. We can move stuff around but that is our reality.

As fans, we are all paying for encouraging the Oxx Fxxx crap for decades. That odious fixture came to represent Scottish Football – and still does. I live in the USA and had a new fridge/freezer delivered and installed today. One guy sounded vaguely Europeanish, but was actually from the Dominican Republic, and when I told him I was from Scotland – he instantly came back with “Celtic and Rxxxxxx” and smiled.

Signing anyone today is gesture recruitment.

Ronny has do get the job done with what he has – that is his job. Still hoping for a party in the Champions League.

Jam tomorrow, but meanwhile….Geez yer money, so we can stash it for some unknown purpose…..shhhh

In fact, tomorrow morning im going to the bank, and im going to empty my account of its contents, and send it to Big Peter.

He is saving for his getaway:)

Were I asked to sum up this transfer period, I would do so by referring to the following:

One loan signing is equal to one kick in a knacker.

We have two loan signings. One for the left knacker and one for the right.

    Painful eh?

  10. martim1980- a manager lives and dies on his dealings in the transfer market, why should Ronny Deila’s reputation be on the line for a guy with a very dubious record? Would you let it happen ? No, not unless you knew that was the deal before you signed up for itHH

I don’t know about that mate, but I know for an absolute fact Lawwell signed a player and the manager at the time didn’t even know who he was.

Manchester City youth players on loan.

Lol. Seriously? Hahaha oh my Holy God. Oh my God.

Every season for the last three or four, I’ve sat and bit my nails and wondered if not buying a season ticket is the right thing. Tonight I feel extremely relieved and for the first time since I started my boycott there are no regrets. None.

This is unbelievable. With tens of millions in the bank we are actually going backwards. It’s almost as if the strategy is deliberately narrowing the gap between us and our competitors in Scotland.

For sure, it is destroying us as a credible club in Europe. I didn’t say a big club, please note. I said a credible one. Not for much longer.

What a shocking state of affairs we have here. There is no defending this.

I hate to say this, it pains me, believe me, but Maribor was a game we never expected to have in a tournament we ought not be in. It’s a game that was never expected.

If the club offers it as part of the season ticket there ought to be a full house.

But if not, when those advertising emails come through, you are a mug if you buy one. Pure and simple. You are being taken for a fool, and you will have proved yourself one if you part with the money to finance the charade that we are even taking this reprieve semi-seriously. We’re not. It’s a money making exercise and nothing more.

I thought my disillusionment peaked after the disaster in Warsaw and our absolutely inept response to it. Tonight shows we can always feel a little lower.

Our club is a joke, and the joke is on us.

  13. Why are we so reluctant to actually spend on transfer fee? Is there something financial lurking in the background that we could have a potential problem with?

Outside of blogs and twitter is, (where stuff is stirred and circulates round and round), or a fairly prolonged period of time, is that the club, given the circumstances over recent years and given market environments, given media bias against us, given the bigotry around us, given, the governing body, given the fact we are the most charitable footballing club in the world, given that we work merch markets fairly dynamically, conference and banqueting, tours, gained and maintained the Nike deal, then Magners, explore youtube for brand growth, slight growth of Celtic TV, holding on to out online rights(important to the future when satelite dies) and holding a business like professional presence whilst Sevo eats itself and tries to draw us in whilst doing three in a row, is down to the stability created by Peter Lawell. Most people appreciate that, they’re thankful even.

    RWE-

Agreed that the young players have to get the chance sometime. But I think they`ve a better chance of making it if they`re put into a team full of experienced pros who can help them through the game. We`re not fixed to do that at the moment, especially in defence where the likes of Efe, van Dijk and Izzy are going through a tough patch.

Players will sign for us if the deal is right and if we do our business quickly. Ki signed when he was young Asian player of the year. Dare I suggest that the prospect of shirt sales in Korea concentrated the mind and made the board very motivated to get that deal over the line?

In recent years we have done our best business in the transfer window by signing players early. Ledley, Hooper, all signed in June 2010. Wanyama in in June 2011. van Dijk signed in June 2013.

Compare that to the guys we`ve brought in at the transfer deadline after CL qualification in 2012 and 2013. Miku, Lassad, Ambrose, Pukki – its the equivalent of desperate people pairing off at chucking out time at Clatty Pats.

I think the longer we wait in summer the worse deals we get in terms of incoming players.

  22. Starry

Totally with you on the need for a right good striker of hero proportions. I think the lift such a signing would give the whole club would be worth pushing the boat out that bit more, even if it was a loan. The effect a Keane or Bellamy type would have on the rest would be huge imo. Feels a bit dour about the place at the moment. I must add though, that I’d be just as happy with a right hungry youngster as you suggest, providing he had some real quality.
