NEWCASTLE fans have urged their team to sign Celtic star Virgil van Dijk.
The St.James’s Park supporters were asked to vote in a special poll on a priority signing in this month’s transfer window.
Celtic’s classy centre-half topped their wish list with 9.11% of the ballot.
The Dutchman was just ahead of West Ham’s Winston Reid, who polled 8.76%. Next came Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross (7.83%).
Van Dijk, who joined the Hoops for £2.6million from FC Groningen in June 2013, has also been linked with Arsenal and Sunderland.
However, club bosses are insisting the 23-year-old remains at Parkhead until the end of the season, at least. It is understood that Celtic’s valuation of the player is higher than the fees achieved in recent times for Victor Wanyama or Fraser Forster.
