Topping agitates for a fans’ revolt

593

“The best hope for the Scottish game? It’s in the activity the fans bring to bear on big organisations.”

“Fans don’t realise yet how much change they can bring about”.

Not the words of a blogger-agitator, the words of out-going SCFL chairman, Ralph Topping, trying to incite fans to revolt against TV companies.  In the same valedictory interview to The Scotsman, Topping acknowledged the mobilisation of fans against governance standards at the SPFL, but turned his face to the fans.

The man has been in office for 8 years but has been a virtual recluse as far as the paying public are concerned.  Now we know why, he has no filter or self-awareness.

Not good enough, Mr Topping.  You have failed to answer any of the pertinent questions (here) and despite the game being brought into significant disrepute during your tenure, you have now briefed the press that you intend to ignore Celtic’s request that matters are reviewed.

If you want to incite a revolt from football fans, you are on track.  We’ll do what we can, I promise.

Is this the thug that could have ruined JF’s Celtic carreer with a violent challenge (imo) which only resulted on a yellow card ?

Did’nt see him trying to reign in some of the ‘iffy’ challenges from his players on friday …….some things never change .

We should boycott the Scottish Cup until the SFA gets rid of the “strong Rangers” mob and replaces them with neutral people who have forward-looking ideas on how to develop the game here.

Given the recent comments by the Sevco chairman, any cups won by his club would not count as Celtic weren’t in the competition.

In likelihood I don’t think the boycott would have to run very long – the bad publicity would be too much and sponsors would start pulling out.

How long though can we wait for the utterings of the SPFL?

  5. Topping is yesterday and his comments are as relevant as LNS.

It is up to Celtic to drive this fight for justice against cheating in our game thru the SPFL and ultimately the SFA. The crooks at FIFA, Blatter et al put up the same type of rearguard action but as with them the genie is out of the bottle.

Rangers cheated the titles/trophies ‘won’ are fraudulent and will be stripped. Just like with Farry it may take several years to get justice but we will get it.

Peter and the Celtic board are on caution from the fans that if they are not up for the fight them we as a fan base will seek to replace them with those who will take the fight to the SPFL/SFA.

This is a fight in two stages: Firstly to get the board to act and then for them to take the fight thru the courts

    to obtain justice.

I seem to recall a cheating hun team, do the huddle after a victory at Celtic Park.

As for anyone that is offended by LG tying a scarf to a goalpost, id ask them to think about what its like to be bottled when you are trying to take a corner.

LG didnt wind them up at all, they were already wound up, weeks before the game.

  15. The Central Scrutiniser on

I read quite a lot of blogs and I read a lot about people calling for the corrupt officials at the SFA and SPFL to be ousted, and I could not agree more, yet I despair. At what point did people begin thinking that writing blogs and commenting on blogs constituted action? At what point did people begin thinking that writing blogs and commenting on blogs was putting pressure on the SFA and SPFL? They ignore blogs! Blogs are irrelevant to them! Blogs are pathetically toothless.

The only publicity the SFA and the SPFL care about are the mainstream media and they are, as we have known for a long time with respect to this issue, a waste of space and will not hold anyone to account. If attendances were down significantly at matches then maybe the SFA and the SPFL would feel the pressure, but attendances are not down. At Celtic Park they are massively up!

The ability to put together online petitions is a great enabler for people in a democratic society like ours agitating for change, but you need something on the order of tens of thousands, if not more, signatures to have ANY effect. The petitions that I have seen on the SFA/SPFL corruption issue have less than ten thousand signatures. Toothless and useless. Only in the tiny little bubble of the Scottish-football blogosphere could these pathetically low numbers be seen as anything other than white noise.

As is becoming clear in the days since the EBT Supreme Court ruling, the SFA and the SPFL intend to brazen out this period in our footballing history. They have planned for this and their plan is working!

Maybe, just maybe, if there was a concentrated effort to display tifos at matches at all SPFL grounds and to organise demonstrations (legitimate and peaceful, of course, football’s not important enough to do otherwise) outside football grounds to put pressure on club boards to take action and, especially, if that effort was concentrated at Hampden, perhaps even with an effective boycott of the Scottish Cup, the League Cup and international matches, then the pressure might be felt.

Until people care enough to put in such a level of effort then nothing will happen. This new media of ours is a good thing, for the authorities that is! In the old days when people actually bought newspapers, there was a commercial, as well as a moral, imperative for the media to agitate for change and it was effective. But now? Nobody buys newspapers and the moral imperative has given way to commercial survival. All that new media has done is create a massively dilute and limp talking shop. It’s very sad to see and we all need to wake up and stop being so naive.

  16. FIFA and Blatter were brought to account by the USA government authorities. Doubt that the Scottish Goverment will act similarly with the SFA.

  17. Warning Self Indulgent Golf post best avoided by non golfers.

Played in Stableford Competition today a few months short of my 70th birthday ( Generous Handicap).

No 1. Ball in hazard no points. No. 2. Shank my approach out of bounds no points. No. 3. 5 miserable shots to reach green get the putt 1 point no 4. 2 points. The next 12 consecutive holes 38 points (never done anything like that before most unlikely ever to do it again), finish up with 2 by 2 pointers for a total of 45.

OK That’s it, sorry for interruption, just felt I had to tell someone. Over & out.

  18. Yup, the only way to beat”them” is boycott, hit them in the pockets. But for this to work, every club must get behind it, every club.

However, sceptical as I always am, and I do hope I’m wrong here but the so called neutral fans who dislike us and them, I feel they dislike us more than them. So, will they have the appetite for a total boycott when the majority of them think it’s a Celtic / Rankers issue only.

Seems such a long time ago.

We need some sort of answer soon.Has anyone even shown an interest?.I have not heard a cheep from any manager in Englandshire.Same with Moussa.A whole list of teams from all over Europe desperate to sign him,yet not a bid.Again Arsenal. Are they just running out of names then going back to the start?.
