Toure, Duffy, Diego and Leo

696

I’ve not seen enough of Kolo Toure or Shane Duffy to have a view on their appropriateness for Celtic but I’m very pleased that despite the headcount of central defenders, Brendan Rodgers appears to be aware that he’s only got one he can rely on. We cannot afford to have another season of set-piece trauma in Europe.

Aston Villa’s Scott Sinclair has the makings of a more profound signing for Brendan, especially if he arrives for anything close to Villa’s asking price. Ronny Deila foundered in a sea of wide midfielders who were unable to command a starting place for any duration. We are the club where wide players come to damage their career prospects. Most of those who have ‘walked through Parkhead gates’ in this time had done so on a sale-or-return basis; at circa £6m Scott Sinclair would need to be right.

A friend once asked why the Argentinians adore Diego Maradona but appear reluctant to appreciate Lionel Messi. Diego single-handedly delivered the World Cup in 1986 and retired from international football having given everything to his country as a 33-year-old. Leo bowed out with a couple of runners-up medals two days after his 29th birthday. He could easily compete in another two World Cups, if he had the appetite.

That’s not to judge Leo; maybe he identifies with the people he chose, not with a nation. Many of us do.

  1. The boy Moussa Dembele looks a player.

Aged 19, scored 17 goals in the Championship last season with Fulham.

    Several clubs showing an interest.

    Need to be quick Brendan!

    Or should that be Peter_

    HH!!

Good call, one of the two of them have to make the position their own though, both a little short on pace but if you can pass the ball let the ball do the work. I’m sure Brendan will want that sorted out and not be half way through the season still looking for his best team..

    Interesting times!

I’m 77 in a couple of weeks time, and proud to say I voted to REMAIN.I also voted NO in the referendum to leave Great Britain. But if there is another vote to leave the UK I’ll be first in the queue to vote YES. I’ve never been so disillusioned with a Government in all my life,Fancy voting for a prick like Boris Johnson.

    Weeminger,

    From the last thread…

As usual the Banks are already ahead of the game…

‘Banks begin moving some operations out of Britain’

    ——-

The very same scum that wouldn’t exist, after 2008, if it wasn’t for the British tax payer.

    Round ’em up, I say!

  5. CLOGHER CELT on 27TH JUNE 2016 12:31 PM

It should be said that the one’s talking about moving staff aren’t the British banks that received bailout packages. So far I’ve heard HSBC, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, UBS.

Seems 29 snivelling wretches who don’t know where their bread is buttered/opportunists/principled people have resigned their roles in the Parliamentary Labour Party.

    ———

    Filthy, souless, treacherous scum.

As for those banks that have began moving their business abroad; them animals need reminding that they would be out of existence were it not for the blood & sweat of the British tax payer after 2008.

    Deeply worrying times —

The woman from Padova has announced that she will be watching Italia v Spagna . Woman has no interest in football – I therefore risked a wtf for .

” Everybody says Italia are rotten and Spain should win easily .. If that’s true I like the idea of watching Conte spontaneously combusting — on the other hand -Italia being Italia might just mug them 1-0.”

    We’ll see !

The end is nigh Brexit hysteria continues on Italian tele — today’s delights have included Erasmus students bemoaning the awfulness of life in places like Preston and Lincoln . One young woman couldn’t decide if Brits drink so much because they were depressed or they were depressed because they drink so much . Guy from Brescia doing a year in Lincoln bemoaned the regular -Wop abuse – and expressed the thought that he would have died if he hadn’t been able to escape to London at weekends

  8. The banks know fine well that Brexit spells economic disaster for the UK, hence their preparations for moving their ops to Frankfurt and Paris. It serves the bassas right. The Scottish fishing grounds were treated as p(r)awns by British trade negotiators whose main aim was to reinforce London’s preeminent position as Europe’s finance capital. N Sea oil was klondyked to the international markets instead of being nurtured and brought onstream in a more orderly fashion like Norway’s. The Norwegians now have one of the world’s biggest investment funds which cushion them from the worst of any recession. Tony Benn tried to channel all N Sea oil through BNOC, later Britoil, to set up a similar fund for Britain. Macjay and his pals scuppered that during the 1st Thatcher term in office.

Now the elite are in a quandary; do they try to reverse Brexit or do they pander to the populist Johnson/ Farage axis? Both are fraught with problems. I forsee an attempt to reverse Brexit.

    Weeminger,

I suppose it will depend on the Passporting Requiremnents set out below.

If the UK is going to stay within the EEA after negotiations? (Immigration?).

If not, Bilateral Agreements, such as the special provisions for Switzerland and Gibraltar?

Given the complexity the Banks probably have to look at solutions outwith the City, otherwise after Article 50 is triggered the negotiators only have 2 years to resolve all of this or at best, their business model transacting business from London to other EEA States looks to be uncertain.

I don’t know specifically about UK banks. RBS has a large presence in the ROI via Ulster Bank for example.

I see mixed evidence. Being so deep in RES12 would mire you in the worst parts of it.

But there’s another side to our nation that’s much more admirable.

I don’t have tartan tinted spectacles but there’s a commitment to civilised social and health services in parliament and society that is increasingly absent in many other nations.

When you see that Austria came within a bawhair of electing neo nazis sometimes we need to count our blessings and be at peace with our better points

    HH jamesgang

    =======

Absolutely and the point I was making was that rather than separate ourselves from those that lack our better qualities do we not have some responsibility to “educate” them?

Before Labour veered right did we not have well educated Scots in UK Government essentially to provide the very balance that is lacking and getting worse?

There is a book “Caught in the Crossfire” http://www.birlinn.co.uk/Caught-in-the-Crossfire-9781841589916.html that whilst about gang warfare between two Glasgow families, told perhaps unintentionally as a secondary narrative, how Labour lost its footing in its strongest constituencies to SNP. Basically Labour MPs abandoned their constituencies, not the other way round.

I actually recommended it to Corbyn ‘s office when he was elected.

The UK is now a nation bereft of values in public life and we are now reaping the whirlwind. We can be swept away by it or try to take the wind out of it by arguing for a united country based on values and ethics rather than politics.

I doubt I’ll see it in my lifetime.

Your Comment ‘Round them up hang them high’ (Re-the banks)

I agree with you. The problem is when the UK exits they won’t have a licence to do business with other EEA countries. They therefore have to look at alternative locations until the terms of the negotiations are clarified. They didn’t create this the Briexit campaign, the lacklustre Remain campaign and sadly 17m voters did.

We might do well to consider the Swiss model. How was that achieved(?)…Switzerland is neither an EU nor EEA member but is part of the single market – this means Swiss nationals have the same rights to live and work in the UK as other EEA nationals.

Unless of course we want to scrap the whole European venture and start again?

  15. BABASONICOS71 on

I’d take Dembele and Sinclair (though not at £6m) but not Toure. It’s not up to me though so i’ll go with whatever Brendan decides.

Dembele has looked good anytime i’ve saw him play,he has good close control, can make a decisive pass in the final third of the pitch, and can score.

Sinclair impressed when at Swansea but I haven’t saw much of him in the last couple of seasons.I have faith in Brendan to get the best from him though and then he’d be a great asset for us.

As much as Leo has entertained and thrilled since breaking into the Barca team Diego will always be the best imo.I realise Messi has won more titles and scored more goals than Maradona but he hasn’t done anything with a ball that wasn’t already displayed by Diego.Although winning two league titles and a UEFA Cup with Napoli, and a World Cup almost by himself, are highly impressive achievements it was his wizardry with a ball that are the defining and indelible memories I have.I don’t really enjoy picking one over the other as both have provided me with so much pleasure over the years but if I had to choose it would always be Diego for me.

As for the bankers…rhyming slang innit?! ;))

  16. Re Labour

Dont know the rules on getting reselected for sitting MPs.Are they automatically selected because of being sitting MPs.

If so then then as a matter of principle maybe they should go through a selection contest next time around as they seem to be at odds with the wider Labour membership

And were Thatcher and Major right then? Were the people who opposed them wrong? They were unsuccessful in persuading a majority of the electorate but, having lived through those times, I can still remember how a “Falklands” War, successfully negotiated, was an absolute necessity for a 2nd Thatcher term. Without a war, she was on course to lose. So a war was found.

    ======================================================================

    Aaaah.

The old lie , or perhaps just an unfortunate misunderstanding.

Either way , children read this site ,apparently.

So,it`s important they are not subjected to a distorted view of history.

    End of Falklands war………………….. June 14 1982.

    Date of General Election………………June 9 1983

If your ludicrous accusation above had any credence , why did Thatcher wait almost a full year to go to the people ?

The Labour Party voted with Thatcher in favour of sending a taskforce to the Falklands .

Do you think that the old turkey , Michael Foot , would have voted for Christmas ?

    No .

He knew fascist military aggression when he saw it , recognised it for what it was and fully supported the action taken .

The upshot is that Thatcher introduced ( a kind of ) democracy to Argentina and our forces liberated the English speaking citizens of the Falklands from under Galtieri`s fascist boot.

The old socialist , Michael Foot ,recognised the need to do that.

    Maybe it`s time you did.

    ============================================================================

    N.B. Galtieri`s fascist boot

And you in your own attempt to obfuscate , suggest that in a later post , I had suggested that Galtieri was a socialist.

    Devious , old son.

    Simply devious.

  24. The Labour Party, over the last 6yrs ,are going nowere, 2duds,Milliband ,and Brown, now we have a 3rd one in Corbyn,Socialism, to day is a spent force, when they have been in power ,they give money to projects that shouldn’t get it,also ones that are on Benefits, seem to get more money, than folk that are working 40 hrs or more, that to me is not right, and when Labour were in power I never seen so many people going about with sticks, all to get another few quid of the Government, who are to blame for allowing these things to happen, Then when there is a change of Government, these benefits are halved, and sometimes more, and this is were the problems start, money gets cut,a lot of them told that they are fit work, but a lot of them say they can’t get a job ,because the immigrants have them, what I’m saying governments have taken liberty’s with people, and its them to blame and not the Immigrants.
