Toure, Duffy, Diego and Leo

696

I’ve not seen enough of Kolo Toure or Shane Duffy to have a view on their appropriateness for Celtic but I’m very pleased that despite the headcount of central defenders, Brendan Rodgers appears to be aware that he’s only got one he can rely on. We cannot afford to have another season of set-piece trauma in Europe.

Aston Villa’s Scott Sinclair has the makings of a more profound signing for Brendan, especially if he arrives for anything close to Villa’s asking price. Ronny Deila foundered in a sea of wide midfielders who were unable to command a starting place for any duration. We are the club where wide players come to damage their career prospects. Most of those who have ‘walked through Parkhead gates’ in this time had done so on a sale-or-return basis; at circa £6m Scott Sinclair would need to be right.

A friend once asked why the Argentinians adore Diego Maradona but appear reluctant to appreciate Lionel Messi. Diego single-handedly delivered the World Cup in 1986 and retired from international football having given everything to his country as a 33-year-old. Leo bowed out with a couple of runners-up medals two days after his 29th birthday. He could easily compete in another two World Cups, if he had the appetite.

That’s not to judge Leo; maybe he identifies with the people he chose, not with a nation. Many of us do.

  1. On this day in 1971, Celtic legend Charlie Tully passed away at home in West Belfast aged only 47.

  4. I can understand the reaction to mp’s moving against Corbin.

He is clearly a decent and principled guy who is prepared to stand up against injustice and against centrist blairites within his party.

However is he ever going to be elected by the population as a whole or will he forever be the leader of a powerless protest group.

The labour party without power cannot help anyone or change anything.

I believe Corbin in his heart of hearts must know this. The party and country is crying out for leadership and he is clearly unable to provide it.

He should step aside to allow someone to lead and win back the country from these awful and dangerous tories.

    You know it makes sence.

Do the Labour Party then only allow someone acceptable to the Tory press to be leader?

Or do they vote by a landslide to give the job to someone with the principles that they themselves believe in?

I get your point, win the election first. But the last time we did that,it wrecked the party for a generation because we ignored the next step-help our core electorate.

I firmly believe that our core electorate is still there. But we need to be given a reason to vote. And then we need a reason to vote Labour.

F….d if I fancy voting for a party given the thumbs up by The Sun,Telegraph or Mail.

  7. Just noticed on Sky that the new team in Glasgow are off to the USA. It appears that Joey Barton is not able to travel. No reason given. The silence of the media about this lot when matters are seen to place them in a poor light is incredible. I do not imagine we would be afforded the same silence.

Dont disagree with your points on the tory press. I think they believe Corbin is the perfect leader of the labour party as he will never command the centre ground of Brittish politics. We handed that ground to Cameron long ago. I also agree there is a core vote desperate to have a party leader and policies to support but it aint jeremy.

So no its not who is acceptable to the daily mail or the express but it is about who is acceptable to the bulk of the centre left population

I know! Sometimes, I check with myself to see if I am, perhaps, a a wee bit blinkered but the frequency of matters like that reassure me that all is well in my mind and that Sevco are, indeed, afforded all the same positive spin that their progenitors received. How on earth do we change this bias?

  12. Sky showing that new team at airport preparing to fly out to the USA. Interview with manager included. Oh bhoy, the only way to stop them is to win everything next season. Go to it the team that has been in the top flight since 1888. Never been relegated or liquidated.

The 1973 tory govt policy was to gain entry into EEC – no referendum

The Lab govt of 1974 pledged a referendum on our continued entry

So you could say the over 60s were correcting their earlier mistake.

I am well over sixty and was not correcting earlier mistake.

Having no illusions about people like Boris, IDS, Fox and Gove I very firmly voted Remain.

  21. Labour is busted flush in Scotland as so called Scottish Labour Party is seen as tied to its English masters and policies, despite what the claim. Time they developed balls and declared true independence.

  22. There is a fallacy promoted by the tory media that a political party must win over the “middle ground” to in an election. What is this middle ground?

    1. Encourage those in work to get into debt of 4 or 5 times their annual salary to buy a home and the trappings of success such as a fancy car and every electronic gizmo going.

    2. Tell us that those who shuffle money round the 24/7 markets amongst themselves and their pals are vital to our wellbeing.

    3. Convince everyone that Trades Unions are old fashioned, “communist”, dangerous and not worth joining.

Anyone who disagrees with this analysis is a socialist, fascist and totally unrealistic. (Just ask Macjay)

We should remember that every advance made towards a more equal society has been fought for by workers acting together, mostly through their TUs, and that every gain has been forced from the elite by the threat, if not the actualite, of strike action. Tell the bankers to GTF. Who would lose? Our forebears did and we got the NHS, a decent, free education system and a social welfare network. These gains are in danger with Bullingdon boys telling us we can’t afford them while they give their old school pals hundreds of billions to cover their banking casino losses.

There has almost always been poor leadership in the Labour Movement, primarily because most of us canny be botheres engaging with their TU or Lab Party. Unless we get up off our arses (or knees), we will always be vulnerable to poor quality leaders, usually in the form of careerists and featherbedders like Blair and Kinnock.

Clement Attlee, a very unspectacular man, was ridiculed by Churchill as being “modest with a lot to be modest about.” He won 2 elections and legislated for many of the gains now under threat.

No easy answer. But a prerequisite for turning things round is for a LOT more of us to get engaged, make our TUs more powerful again, and keep our political reps honest by holding them to open account.

The Lab Party must become more relevant to ordinary people if it is to have any chance of attaining power. I think a new socialist grouping is needed. Ditch the baggage of the last 30 years and start again. Keep clear of personalities like Sheridan and careerists like Murphy; we may have a chance.

However, I wish that I had written your post myself.

  25. Among all the obvious things I hope for next season is the one where Celtic highlight the almost inevitable plethora of honest mistakes which will be made. Unfortunately, the majority of these `mistakes` are of the type which do not seem important but are designed to give Sevco every advantage over the course of ninety minutes. This makes for some difficulty in Celtic giving a view.
