Trading well is everything

288

Trading well is everything.  Two years ago we watched a World Cup game between our then right back, playing for Croatia, and the right back we were interested in, who played for Canada.  Josip Juranovic went to the semifinal with Croatia, while Alistair Johnston’s Canada went home without a point.

Celtic’s recruitment system told them to trade Josip and buy Johnston.  Alistair was the gold nugget lost in the MLS.  This and trades like it, gave Celtic a football identity which brought the latest wave of trophies.  It is Tier 1 operating mechanism, learned from City Football Group, and aligned to what Hearts have now signed up with.

I am delighted Alistair has signed a new deal that could keep him at the club until 2029.  He has the ability and fitness to be a stand out for us in the Champions League for all that time.

Still, ‘Trading well is everything’.  You and I have learned so much since we watched the wheels come off Martin O’Neill’s great team, as it expired through age.  My suspicion is that we will do less trading like the Juranovic-Johnston deals going forward and more deals like Adam Idah and Arne Engels.

The deal is a good boost ahead of the trip to Tynecastle, not to mention this morning’s AGM.

Yes . Hard to fathom how Livvy managed to beat them last week . I don’t watch a lot of championship football but I can’t imagine many other Chapionship sides capable of playing Falkirk’s brand of passing football . In fact there are not many premiership teams who do !

  7. Brendan on his future:

“Brendan Rodgers has hinted he could remain at Celtic beyond his three year Parkhead promise.

The Hoops boss is thrilled defender Alistair Johnston has penned a new deal at the Premiership champions until 2029. And the Irishman has left the door open on doing likewise. Rodgers is almost halfway through the three year deal agreed on his return in the summer of 2022 having vowed on day one to see it out. But the 51-year-old admitted he is feeling right at home at the club – and he could be open to extension talks next season.

Rodgers said: “What did I say on my first day here? Three years unless I get bumped early! Listen, I said I’d be here for three years. At the end of three years, I’ll have done nearly six years as Celtic manager which is a long time for a Celtic manager. I haven’t really thought about it.

“For near on a year, there was probably more people that wanted me out than in so I’m not going to be talking about new contracts now! I just need to continue to work well, do my very best for the club and I’m pretty sure at some point next season we can see how we’re going and take it from there.

“But at the minute, I love my life here, it’s amazing club to work in. Funny enough, going away and coming back has made it even better for me because I knew what I missed when I was away. I’m not in a big rush to be leaving again. It’s a great place to be, I love working with the players.

“They say in life, the biggest currency you have is time. As you get to 51 and older, you realise that. Time around people you love, your family, your workplace. And I would have to agree with that. Where I am at the minute, I’m at a brilliant place so we’ll just keep it that way.”

  8. I, also, watched the QP v Falkirk game. The Hampden pitch looks in really good nick at the moment. If Falkirk want to go up, they’ll have to start taking their chances. Nice passing football really needs an end product.

Some really desperate bitter and ignorant small men at work.

  12. Well if D Desmond ,Rod Stewart ,Peter Lawell,Lord Haughey and others who are all on freebies ,I’m sure they could help build the main stand ,or at least put another tier on top of the old press box

  13. Been working all day so just catching up.

Brendan’s comments about how he’s feeling at the club and reflecting on getting older and what’s important in life are really interesting.

In his first stint I loved him as our coach and leader but didn’t really warm to him if I’m being totally honest.

I made a comment a few months ago about how happy I was he was back but maybe not wanting to go for a pint with him.

The latter part of the comment was really about the old Brendan, the version we have now is someone I’m sure most of us would like to spend some time with.

The picture is an artist impression, happens all the time. The club specifically said what current plans were and pointed to future phases of work which would include a grand stand. Celtic never applied to put a grand stand in place, the full applications by celtic to glasgow city are in the planning portal. Know knowing celtic it could take decades to peogress a grandstand but bo application was rejected and issues with access road therefor had no relevants. Why you passing negative bullshite across as fact when it is not fact all all. Downer on celtic, ok, I get it but let’s not pretend to know stuff just to add to your unhappiness

  15. ADVERTISEMENT
  16. In my ideal world celtic would just grab the bull by the hornes and get the main stand sorted. In my vision the 2 smaller corner stands would be developed to match the hight of the ll, js and north stand. That would increase capacity by around 6k. An extended south stand out towards the celtic way and up to match the hight of the other stands. The new structure would be bolted into the existing facia and stand which would be improved and connected. Up to new structure. The lower section could be configured to offer better facilities for supporters, a superstore, supporters sports bar etc.

The upper section would be build like the Copenhagen style stand with boxes etc set above the current boxes. The added space at that level could be used to add a bunch of corporate boxes north facing (pitchside) and a museum, restuarants, hotel, sport bar etc.

Once the new structure was in place the old roof would be taken down and replaced with a new roof which would be placed on the new south stand and kibjed to new corner roof structures. That would clear the sight lines for supporter in the new upper corners.

Would likely be able to add 5 or so rows of seats alomg the length of the south stand on the roof of the older corporate boxes with access to private boxes.

upgrade of the main stand – why dont we swap our main stand with hampdens (changing the seat colours obviously)

You are desperately trying to look relevant by putting Joe McHugh’s name into your post.

JM despatched your PLC licking ass off of his blog so that your succulent poison wont destroy videocelts.com in the same way that you have destroyed CQN by sleekitly having a hand in the removal from CQN of many posters who don’t live on their knees like you obviously do.

Joe McHugh is the last shred of non succulent sell out betrayal that the almost 60,000 have by backing a board full of Lawwell lickers and even Brendan has joined in as well, licking Lawwell’s lying ass at the AGM – I take it that Brendan dizny remember all of the players that he said he never bought seeding doubts about his commitment to the club [ can’t be many BR job offers in the pipeline ] now that BR has had to come across as being all in – behind the Lawwell family which puts him into a position of weakness going forwards.

Nobody likes lying suck-ups like BR clearly is. Desperate men and all of that eh.

Well done to videocelts.com for their post AGM update which you won’t read on any of the clique controlled blogs eh.

  22. BORGO67 @ 10:30 PM,

That’s a very good point on Brendan Rodgers.

His pressers since his return have been great value and are actually very insightful.

As someone who has been batting his corner for many a long year now – maybe being brought up in the South of England gives me a different perspective of how BR would have had to “adapt” in England.

It may seem false, or as my mum called it “affected”!? to us, it’s really just a cultural difference that often seems a chasm.

On the lead – “Still, ‘Trading well is everything’”

Has always struck me as a very strange way to view either a football company or a football squad.

The first priority of the football squad, especially a Celtic squad is to strive to have a team “playing football. Pure, beautiful, inventive football.”

The funds and management of the resources needed to facilitate that has to come from the football company.

Now their main source of revenue is ticket sales, merchandising, broadcasting rights.

Player trading is a notoriously difficult path to tread, even the best at it are hit and miss – it is a bugbear, though a necessary one, for the Football Manager and staff, and it is a minefield for the executive.

The examples in the lead are curious also – Juranovic-Johnston, selling a high value players and backfilling with equivalent up to now has been a rarity and far from the norm, as Kieran Tierney’s left back berth will testify.

City spend an absolute fortune on player trading, which is a huge cost to the organisation.

Celtic can ill afford to let player trading become a huge cost to the Club.

Hearts, with all due respect, I have seen absolutely nothing at the Tynecastle Club that Celtic would wish to emulate in player trading.

Going forward they may develop a trading model that will suit their Club and give them more success – the bar is pretty low there right!?

Yet, I’m happy to bet Celtic still keep ahead of them in the results game.

And you know why? ‘Cause trading isn’t everything.

    Hail Hail

    -football model in scotland

    -football club structure

    – managing a club outside the EPL

    I’d certainly buy –

you repeatedly pick up on player performance issues ‘outwith going to the game emotions’

you spot mistakes in other clubs which turn out to be true over and over

  28. Celtic have announced that James Forrest has signed a one-year contract extension, committing his future to the club until the summer of 2026.

fabulous kick off time. whats not to like about 7.45pm on a saturday.

especially today to give the snow a chance to melt in our towns this afternoon so we can head out to watch it

  31. https://cdn.celtsarehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/spfl_well_celtic_2897-1-1920×1738.jpg

Since making his first-team debut in 2010, Forrest has been a cornerstone of Celtic’s success. The 32-year-old has amassed over 500 appearances, scored more than 100 goals, and contributed over 100 assists. His efforts have played a key role in securing an incredible 24 trophies, making him the second most decorated player in the club’s history.

Forrest’s loyalty and dedication were recognised last season with a testimonial match, a rare honour that reflects his exceptional service to the club. With this extension, Forrest is now poised to finish his career at Celtic, a fitting conclusion for a player who has given so much to the green and white jersey.

The contract extension is a reward not only for Forrest’s consistency on the pitch but also for his leadership and experience within the squad. As Celtic continue to chase domestic and European success, Forrest’s presence remains invaluable both on and off the field.
