Transfers: supply and demand

270

I know we’ve touched on this before, but I continue to see, “Why do Celtic always leave it until the last minute?’ question asked about the transfer window.  This is not a difficult question, in fact, it is the easiest question you will ever get about how football works.

Why do Brighton always leave it to the last minute?  Why do Manchester City always leave it to the last minute? [Brighton, Man City and Celtic have, of course, already signed players].  Brighton are apparently very keen to sign Matt O’Riley, but here we are, on the 22 August, their season is already underway and Matt is knocking about Lennoxtown this morning.

We all know why this is.  Matt is under contract and Celtic want to keep him, so will leave it until they are sure it is right to sell, that they have extracted the highest possible bid, and that they have backfill.  How is it possible to know how sellers act when you are connected to the seller, but not when you are connected to a buyer?

Transfer windows skew activity towards the end of the period.  Exceptions to this rule exist, but they always come with a story.  Celtic, Brighton or Manchester City are not responsible for how humans react to supply and demand.  Complaining about it is like shouting at the wind.

    ————————————–

    Yes indeed Paul.

Regardless of the spread of demand, those with the deepest pockets and the more attractive situation tend to hoover-up the lion’s share of the available sought after supply. Let’s hope we’re in the queue and get lucky.

Funny, but I seem to recall the story always being that players wouldn’t sign for us until they know we are going to be in the Champions League……

  10. We don’t blow enough wind.

And that’s because the Board lacks ambition to develop a modern energy policy by harnessing the wind of a million worldwide Celts. If we had a hydro-electric policy to utilise the fluid of bedwetters as well, we’d soon earn a Green Flag on the Champions League Trophy.

Don’t know if there’s anything in this but a friend of a friend was in a taxi driven by Owen Coyle’s granny who told him she had just dropped off the two super-agents Egor Ripovski and Pedro Puntaplaya at Celtic Park.

  15. We need a number of Scots players in our CL squad. If Mikey goes, following the loss of Vata & Kelly- it is imperative that we keep McGregor, Taylor, Forrest, Ralston, Welsh, Bain and use some Celtic II (as they are called now) players to flesh out the numbers. I assume (but don’t know) that we cannot list players like Dane Murray and Matt Anderson- if they go out on loan so that leaves us with Francis Turley & who else? Mitchell Frame? Colby Donovan? Any other suggestions? How many do we need?

  16. Just listened to Stylian being interviewed by Nick Eardley ( a big Celtic fan) on 5 Live. His greatest ever achievement and memory on looking back over his remarkable career …… The day he signed for Celtic!

    Love that ghuy!!!

  17. There’s always a forrest of hysterical whiners using ‘dreadful transfer window’ or ‘the fans must tell the Board’ as clickbait for their ill-thought through and poorly written sites.

  18. When we were discussing Dom McKay’s exit earlier and referenced our loss to Sevco in the Scottish Cup during Covid season- I had a look at our back 5 that day and it read:-

    Bain

    J-J Kenny Welsh Ajer Laxalt

Greg Taylor came on for Laxalt when we went 2 down and we mounted a late challenge with a Taylor tackle saving a near certain 3rd goal for Sevco. Unfortunately Edouard missed a sitter and a pen and Elyanoussi missed another sitter too.

I reckon Man City are buying all the Celtic shares – aided and abetted by Peter Lawwell.

They are going to buy O’Riley, Kyogo, Hatate and CCV – but then seize control of the club and take all their money back…

  21. Chairbhoy

I was going with this from Celtic Wiki:-

“He was starting the day after Celtic lost two nil away to Sevco in the Scottish Cup ending a disastrous season without any silverware, and the announcement of a proposed controversial European Super League which was limited to big nations so far (which didn’t get off the ground).”

It wasn’t and isn’t a dig at Dom since none of us know the reasons for his leaving.

… I do agree with the poster who said he spoke well.

His sit down Q&A alongside Ange was refreshing.

I got the impression he was a guy who wanted to keep fans informed.

In recent fans survey I called out communication as the weakest part (by a distance) of the corporate behaviour.

Even went as far as suggesting putting a Chief Customer Officer into the executive structure.

JPT is well intentioned but doesn’t have the juice.
