Transfers: supply and demand

270

I know we’ve touched on this before, but I continue to see, “Why do Celtic always leave it until the last minute?’ question asked about the transfer window.  This is not a difficult question, in fact, it is the easiest question you will ever get about how football works.

Why do Brighton always leave it to the last minute?  Why do Manchester City always leave it to the last minute? [Brighton, Man City and Celtic have, of course, already signed players].  Brighton are apparently very keen to sign Matt O’Riley, but here we are, on the 22 August, their season is already underway and Matt is knocking about Lennoxtown this morning.

We all know why this is.  Matt is under contract and Celtic want to keep him, so will leave it until they are sure it is right to sell, that they have extracted the highest possible bid, and that they have backfill.  How is it possible to know how sellers act when you are connected to the seller, but not when you are connected to a buyer?

Transfer windows skew activity towards the end of the period.  Exceptions to this rule exist, but they always come with a story.  Celtic, Brighton or Manchester City are not responsible for how humans react to supply and demand.  Complaining about it is like shouting at the wind.

Above from BBC Sport gossip page

So if they are now only lodging an application with the CIty Council they were never going to be ready for our trip to the Death Star were they?

  4. AN TEARMANN @ 12:16 AM,

My point wasn’t having a go at individual sites or individual posters, here is how I responded to sinilar issues on SC…

    “The thing is simply this…

    The Transfer Window is open

The Manager wants to and needs to strengthen the first team to enable us to deliver our objectives this season

We have a huge wad of cash in the bank

We can take that cash and invest it in tangible assets i.e. Quality Football Players

Why would any supporter not want that?

So if there is anyone out there making excuses for failure to bring quality players to Celtic and others who are trying to dampen expectations of what our Club can achieve it strikes me as an odd stance”…

There are genuine view points on this site that are different to mine, goid fholk with different opinions and of course that is fine.

Yet, there are obviously those who are motivated differently, for instance why hasn’t our “Manager” been celebrated for his achievements on CQN main articles?

Are there posters who hold a similar view of our Manager making comments?

    Hail Hail

    Hail Hail

  5. Re O’Shea being valued at £15m by Burnley is crazy , can’t have anything to do with the following:

However, the club’s net debt (the total debt minus cash in bank) rose from £53.2million to £81.3million – and up from £14.8million in 2020-21. Meanwhile, bank loans rose from £45million to £70million.

When the English football bubble bursts it’s going to be a massive correction ….

Not sighted on the report valuing O’Shea @ £15m …

… but when i heard they sold Berge for £20+5m my first thought was £8m for O’Shea won’t fly.

There was a time when bargains could be picked up from teams relegated from the EPL .. with clubs desperate to cut costs to Championship level.

The problem is,in the the EPL,there are two teams reportedly, ready to pay that price for him. What annoys me is,just why can’t we?.Its not a fortune today, when transfers of £40 million upwards are the norm.We have spent nothing so far.Anyway, seems by paper talk its Trusty now, part ex with MJ.Which we could have tried with Burnley.

  11. That safety netting at Ibrox,I take it will cover the section of the Broomloan as well as the corner.

Ridiculous that we have agreed to this. Our fans and staff have been the injured parties. To put netting up at Celtic Park, makes us look equally guilty to the SS audience, worldwide.Should not have entertained this idea.No away fans, end of.

  12. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

TB – I hear you but it goes to sizeable difference in potential value the player can bring.

I think £15m is rich for O’Shea in terms of what he brings to Celtic.

    Wolves on the other hand?

Just sold Max Kilman (27 years old, 127 senior games, no caps at any age level) to West Ham United for £40m.

Following is hypothetical but illustrates potential value.

If, across a whole season, O’Shea score one headed equaliser, clears one off the line to keep

the score level, and does a goal saving tackle to preserve a narrow lead that wins the game?

He delivers 4 points for Wolves, perhaps taking them from 33 points and relegation … to 37 points and safety.

    …. AND £150m.

    Hmm.

A look at the cup final or the final league game at CP (i cannot remember which ot was) would seriously challenge this statement. Rangers players were pelted with coins as they were taking corners. We can, & do stoop to their level at times

  17. Personally. It convinced with the Sheffield Utd CB. Their fans seem pretty happy to be losing him and he was central to one of the worst defences the EPL has ever seen.

Encouraging that we’re looking at the left side of our defence but Nat Phillips had a stronger CV than the Sheffield Utd lad.

£8 million for the young Pole playing for LA seems extremely steep. Just for context, Lewis Morgan has a goal every other game to his name playing for New York RB.

“So if there is anyone out there making excuses for failure to bring quality players to Celtic and others who are trying to dampen expectations of what our Club can achieve it strikes me as an odd stance”

    —————————–

What if people have reasons and explanations but you see them as excuses? That could be the source of the problem- the failure to understand.

Nobody speaks in absolutes. Nobody says we can’t get good players to come here- that would be a mad view- Brighton and Atletico are/were in for Matt, Man City are in for Kyogo, and Arsenal bought Kieran. But people do say, it is harder for us, not impossible, to get good players; on that ground we might get agreement.

People also say that it’s hard to keep good players here; they don’t say it is impossible and they don’t buy the idea that Wanyama, Forster, VVD, Tierney, Christie, Armstrong and possibly MOR & Kyogo left because Celtic were desperate to sell them and piss off various managers. I’ve never heard any one of those players express regret like Jimmy McGrory did or Wallace & Hughes did when we did or tried to do, precisely that, to them in the Good Old days.

It’s an alternative opinion and it’s a minority opinion amongst Celtic fans whose views I respect but disagree with. It cannot be dismissed as merely a bought and paid for opinion or a stupid one. I’ll accept the many flaws I am regularly accused of having, but I’ll claim and prove myself to be of , at least, average, intelligence and I’ll claim and prove, I’ve never received a penny payment for any words I’ve uttered from anyone outside my previous employers, none of whom had a connection with Celtic or anyone at Board level.
