Trashing a historic football club in two easy steps

605

I was delighted when Dundee were awarded the vacant place in the SPL in July last year.  They are a club with an outstanding history (check it out here) whose fans have suffered poor performances and downright bad decisions since the finished within a point of Dundee United and Aberdeen, and were relegated from the Premier Division in its first season.

With a latent, considerable-sized supporter base, by any measure they should be a secure SPL club.  Only Celtic, Sevco, Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs have more fans, although Dundee United may have closed their historical gap.

If Rangers had not been liquidated Dundee would currently be in the First Division, most probably at or near the top.  Barry Smith would be getting ready for a final push for promotion.  Promotion came too soon, they are miles adrift and will be relegated unless Hearts go into administration, suffer a 17 point penalty and make players redundant.

Sacking Smith and appointing John Brown, in political terms, could be described as a brave decision.  ‘Mad’ is another word you could use.  Reports that (suffering) Dundee fans, and shareholders, are in revolt at the appointment, should surprise no one.  John Brown’s very public performances last year marked him out for his communication skills, ability to plan and make considered decisions.  Put him in charge, and you know what you’re getting.

Should we beat them tomorrow, spare a thought for those in dark blue in the corner of the stadium.

Just logged on and discovered “Bomber Brown” is the new Dundee manager, what on Earth are they trying to achieve? Strongest team tomorrow and a warm 10-0 welcome to Paradise for our former foe.

  2. Let the people sing. It is our history our culture and should not be censored or god forbid allowed to be forgotten. Good and righteousness shall allways prevail. Hopefully drink and old age will not dilute my love of all things Celtic.

  3. TT…………..

    ………there’s still hope tho’…..

Think of Bomber’s beemer at yet another ‘friendly fire’ fiasco!

There is only one mod as far as I know, if memory serves the hullabaloo did not start till after the lyrics were deleted, and the noise came mostly from the Traynor desciples

Irish tosh brigade, no place on a football blog or at Celtic park. They want a cherry picked history, the little people and the faeries are ok but dont mention the war.

Nor do I-I’m trying very hard to balance the beauty of pragmatism against the purity of our heritage.

Let them sing and be damned,or advocate that it should be us who do it.

I can find no earthly reason how anyone could defend their songbook-it is by and large filled with poison and hatred. At best.

But that being the case,I can find no reason to provide their apologists with a whataboutery clause.

A few years back, when there was talk of a ten-point penalty for sectarian singing,I was all in favour of bringing back the 70s song-book.

We get done, they get done,we both lose ten points.

But the precedent would have been set. Repeat offences would lead to repeat punishments-but we could knock it on the head, not them.

They’d have been begging to play behind closed doors!

Never give a sucker an even break, nor a hun a chance to say you’re just as bad!!!!!

Anyway, glad I’ve caught you while you are on.

Do you reckon you can get to Cardiff on Saturday?

    ESPN. Complaining about Sevco ..simple

They are losing viewers hand over fist …me included

It will take much more than a few statements to encourage me to re engage

There are stories in the press today that ESPN are rapping it and they expect BT Vision to take over their sports package.

There is an announcement soon about it.

The staff have been told there is a meeting next week about their future employment.

  9. Canamalar,

If you have a shred of evidence that the Board or P67 are “ashamed of the most important phase of Irish history” being celebrated inside Celtic Park, then produce it – otherwise stop going on about it. It’s a no-brainer that we should take any chance to give up a practice that allows thems & their apologists to equate themselves with us, however wrongly.

BTW Speirs does not equate our supporters with theirs: you can’t have read him well.

  10. Maybe Paul, knowing there is a trap, is trying to guide us safely through? Maybe people should give him a little more credit on here sometimes? And even the hint of a controversial song tomorrow with be a god send to the media, the authorities and the Rangers.

    Wits,

so far most of my predictions have come true, I believe time will prove me correct again, this time we are discussing the very soul of the club, I think you will be sitting in a sanitised stadium within 5 years.

The atmosphere will have whithered and died, and there will be no going back.

References to Freedom fighting folk songs inside Celtic park are enough to have you ejected, that is shame and sanitisation, havering about rulebooks is a cop out, there was only one reason not to defend the right of the support top celebrate our heritage, shame and subserviance, know your place.

Had you bothered going back to the begining of this debate, Spiers made a statement on radio that while the hun have made great strides in sorting out their repetoir Celtic have been going backwards, now you explain that.

I might catch your answer tomorrow, its bed time.

    winning captains,

what possible trap can there be, the police only have powers over people going to games, they cannot enforce offensive laws on a blog if they cant prove the poster is going to a game.

The only laws they can enforce are the racosm and sectarian laws being used to nail huns on their sites, the songs do not break any of those laws.

    Now definately time for bed

So the problem isn’t having fans run a club, it’s having the wrong sort of fans run a club.

  18. Some people have short memories.

I recall not to long ago that Mr McCann

decreed that it was not acceptable to

fly the Irish flag inside CP.

  19. Sometimes, I feel that some of the more self-righteous politically correct left wing republican socialists ( have I missed any clique out?) on here simply wish to drag us down, so that they can feel they have won a war only they are intent on fighting, never mind winning. Baffling.

It is not our shared heritage to sing Irish rebel songs at Celtic Park or anywhere else.(It may be some folk’s heritage-not mine- but we are an inclusive club.) We can celebrate all things Celtic without that and we have done many many times in the past.

  20. Gordon64- You “recall” completely incorrectly.

Fergus actually strengthened Celtic’s links with Ireland. It was Irish supporters who laid the first sod of turf at the rebuilt stadium, it was under Fergus that Celtic championed The Fields of Athenrye as a club anthem.

Throughout his tenure the Irish flag few high and proud at CP, as it should.

Celtic fans have been singing Irish rebel songs since the day we begun.

I’m suggesting that we knock it on the head for a bit-that in itself is anathema to me.

To suggest that it is not part of our heritage, well, words fail me.

  24. Italiabhoy

I maybe incorrect but why were we not

allowed flags and banners inside CP ?

I can assure you that the Vogue banner

which was a tricolor was not allowed inside CP.

  25. Celtic’s record victory was 11-0 in 1895 – against Dundee!

With that buffoon in charge let’s go for a new record – 12-0 would do.

We managed 9 against the sheep not so long ago.
