Travel bans and Uefa forfeit

208

Uefa’s decision yesterday, that if a club cannot visit to play a Champions or Europa League qualification game due to travel restrictions, if must forfeit the tie, will force some harsh planning on Celtic.

Travellers from a specific nation could be prohibited from entering Scotland, while Celtic players could be quarantined if they travel to that country.  In this event, Celtic would probably have to base their European squad in a (relatively) safe European country until the ban was lifted or quarantine restrictions expire, or withdraw from the European competition.  Neither prospect is appealing.

The problem does not expire after the qualifiers; governments will remain edgy about spikes as they arise for months to come.

The consequences of the crisis for season 2019-20 were almost impossible to imagine as recently as February.  It feels optimistic that plans for season 2020-21 will go without a hitch.  Contingency plans should note we may need a larger than normal squad.  All rivalries aside, this is one season where it would be useful to have our domestic competitors involved in European football as often as we are.

I would doubt that the selling clubs have had a sniff of filthy lucre from the huns.

    How very dare you I hear that it is world record beating repayment plan;

£5 a week paid over 3 years plus a lump sum of World’s Best Football Club Superstore voucher (which may or may not get you a world beating new Sevco top) and all you can eat at the Louden Tavern buffet. (other ways of contracting salmonella are available) !

  2. The sticking point was always the length of the deal. Celtic wanted a 1 year deal and Fletcher a 2 year deal.

If you are a Celtic supporter you should cease immediately its going to make you ill.

If you are not a Celtic supporter cheers :-) you fair cheered me up.

You can’t always get what you want

You can’t always get what you want

But if you try sometime you find

    You get what you need”

  5. Just a few observations on Rolling Stone’s post

1- Paul’s prediction of a G.O.D. was roundly criticised by a majority on here and on other Celtic blogs. Now that it has been achieved- you are diminishing the achievement as an inevitability. Did you foresee and predict this or is it post-hoc rationalisation or the sound of cognitive dissonance resolving itself? What was your poster name on here when you were predicting this?

2- During those “inevitable “ league wins, there was a when of posters telling us that, “if we keep playing like that, we’re gonna lose this league .” Did they not get the memo re inevitability or were they kidding on? Other teams have run us as close as Sevco have and other teams have taken Cups from us which Sevco haven’t. Only on FF should this narrative of “it does not count if we’re not there”- get any credence.

3- Poor Euro results?? Compared with what? We lose to Artmedia and Red Imps for the same reason that Barca lose to us- I.e. there is always a fighting chance. We lose to Cluj and Copenhagen for the same reasons Real lose to Atletico or Chelsea- they are competitors with similar, even if slightly lesser, resources than us. We have improved in Europe this millennium compared with the last 25 years of the 20th century but no time soon are we getting back to the 60’s

4-As to your main point-is this the only way- of course it is not- but is it the best way? That is more arguable

When MON left there was a debate around “speculate to accumulate “ and a lot of Celts in favour as they had a Bull Market outlook of “you are bound to get it all back in spades!”- they called our Board risk averse whilst they were being risk oblivious.

In the end, I have concluded that it will never be put to the test. The appetite for higher risk spending is not shared by the money men who have to be answerable to the outcomes. If there was a Fergus type figure willing to adopt this approach, he has not come forward these past 20 years.

So it remains a sidelines debate- no risks or consequences to be tested in a real world

In my view, if it is ever put to the test, I hope it is done by another David Murray type at another club in our city

“I’ve never understood the people who look at unprecedented domestic dominance and thought “so what?””

I want Celtic to win or at least do they very best they can in every competition they enter, including Europe. Paul used the phrase ‘generation of domination’ when the prospect of 9IAR was years away- was that being smug or arrogant or self entitled? I don’t remember posters complaining at the time. The reason being was that it was self evident, due to our vast resources and overwhelming advantage to everyone other team.

As much as it may make you feel uncomfortable, can you argue with any of the previous statement? When realistically could or should we have the lost the league during 8IAR and if we did lose it, would it represent anything other than gross negligence?

Europe is a different story and there we have fallen short quite frequently. 4 qualification out of 10 when we have been in the Champions route and seeded in every year (I think?). We have not been past the last 32 since MON days. Sevco, being 8 years old, have surpassed that in Stevie G’s 2nd season and that doesn’t seem to register with anyone on here. Copenhagen have reached the quarters.

Anytime a poster brings up that we can aspire to do better in Europe and that maybe the 10s of millions in the bank could have been used to improve the football team, he is invariably shot down with every reason under the sun why we can’t. Being negative to dampen expectation is perfectly acceptable.

It seems that only when we have a budget multiple times greater than our opponents can we expect anything. If there is equality of arms, Copenhagen, Cluj, AEK, forget about it. We shouldn’t expect anything. This is all against the backdrop of paying top dollar for a CEO. We don’t need a £3m CEO to win the league. Europe should be the prerogative, but in that regard, expectations have been lowered so that winning the league justifies that gargantuan salary.

Also, my previous moniker was Hands Cant Hit etc…so no Sevco fan. Just a Celtic fan with a bit more European ambition.

Supposedly Christopher Julienne is not worried about Sevco’s ‘big money signings’ 😂😂😂

  8. Rolling_Stone,

Your posts are not making anybody uncomfortable. These are unprecedented times of unparalleled success that you seem incapable of acknowledging or finding any joy with. Do we continue to frustrate in the small margins of Europe – yep. From the highs of Lazio twice to the lows of Cluj and Copenhagen. Definitely.

But I’m going to enjoy massively the domestic success if you please. I take nothing for granted and look forward positively to the hope this season offers up.

TEN IN A ROW fella. Suck those good vibes in :)

  10. `The sticking point was always the length of the deal. Celtic wanted a 1 year deal and Fletcher a 2 year deal.`

If this is true, then I am not too bothered that he is not coming to us.

My thinking is that if he ( Fletcher) has belief in himself, he would accept the one year deal believing the other year would be offered at the end of the season when he has shown his calibre.
