Treat Benfica as though they were Barca

After two highly productive performances against Barcelona confidence will be high, but it is worth remembering that Benfica earned a 0-0 draw at Celtic Park on Champions League match day one, and will have no fears for Tuesday.

After that game in September Celtic were favourites to finish bottom of the group.  Barca managed a slim 3-2 at home to Spartak after a late surge, placing them top of the group while the Russians were rightly encouraged.  Benfica earned a valuable away point without being greatly troubled by Celtic.  Indeed, the half time video analysis from the Uefa technicians looped repeatedly on one incident, a Benfica penalty claim.

That scenario has changed.  Celtic sit second top but a win would see Benfica match them on points and go second on the head-to-head.   Make no mistake, despite Celtic’s heroics against Barcelona, Benfica expect to be second in the group on Tuesday evening.  They are rightly favourites.

We are now tantalisingly close to the knock out stages of the Champions League but two of the most difficult games of the season lie ahead.  The best thing Celtic can do is show Benfica as much respect as they showed Barcelona.  Benfica are not quite as dangerous as the Catalans but they are more than capable of exploiting any gaps in the Celtic defence.  Treat them as Barcelona-lite and we might even collect our second win in this tournament away from home.

The Andrea Kearney Fund have a signed Celtic jersey available for auction on eBay. The fund, in memory of Andrea, assists families of women who are diagnosed with cancer while pregnant. Since Andrea died, aged 41, four years ago, over 50 families have been helped.

You can keep an eye on the auction here.

The CQN Annual will be available next week, both online and at one or two selected retail outlets. There’s a cracking image on the cover of a goal celebration from a recent goal….

My bhoy knew Paul Milne well & has nothing but good things to say about him – he seems to have been a remarkable young man.

  2. fergus slayed the blues on

I think if we get the score draw and Barca win we are guaranteed last 16 .

I did not expect much from the group stages to be honest so it has been great so far and to experience the game against Barca on our 125th birthday was amazing so I am already well pleased .

We have a young inexperienced team and manager at this level so no matter what happens in the last two games I will have enjoyed the ride .

The bhoys are already heroes in my eyes

    hail hail

  3. KK (previous thread),

I didn’t think that you were responsible for the false basis of the questions that you used – sorry if I didn’t make that clear. I wouldn’t presume to “clarify” or otherwise “improve” your thinking.

I agree that nuclear weapons, whether “bigger & better” or “original unimproved” aren’t the answer to anything & wouldn’t help an over-populated world, if such a thing existed. I also think that to blame the Palestinians for their own plight is a cruel slander. However, I still disagree on the “concentration camp”: the farmer whose situation you described lives in an unfree country, but he’s not confined to a camp or prison.

If I remember rightly, we had an amicable exchange re Mynah Bird some time ago: you obviously feel the urge to take a pop at him – I don’t, at least until I read an offending post by him. You & I may not agree about everything, but we don’t have any problems with that.

  4. We should and, hopefully, will give Benfica the utmost respect.

There is too much at stake for it to be otherwise.

A score draw and we qualify for the last 16.

Quite sure Neil and the coaching staff will have them fired up.

Ah, Ian Duncan Smith has been reading up on this as his & Lord Fraud’s Mandatory Work Scheme bites ever harder along with the sanctions for those on JSA.

The new Mediaeval era gets underway as we bypass several centuries of social progress and hurtle backwards to serfdom… by default though it may be.

IMHO, hoops is for the off either in january or july, failure to agree contract thusfar would suggest thats the liekly outcome.

i like him and would keep him if possible

however, i would sell him now rather than loss him later, actually that statement could go against the names of most all our team

  9. I have been to Palestine a few times, was in the Golan heights a few days before a group of unarmed civilians walked across the border in a symbolic attempt to reach their homes which their parents were driven out of after 67 war. The unarmed civilians were shot down like dogs. Israel maintains an illegal maritime blockade of Gaza preventing food, medicine & building supplies reaching the besieged population. It pays lip service to a Palestinian State but keeps building Settlements on Palestinian Lands, making any kind of viable State totally impossible. I am not anti Jewish and totally accept the State of Israel but the way they are treating the Palestinians is utterly disgraceful and unfortunately the troubles stemming from Palestine is the catalyst for all the terrorism and violence which besets the Muslim world. An eye for an eye and we all end up blind.

    Hi Ghuys, Salve salve;-

Young Tony Watt Contract extension? A great piece of business for Celtic and young Tony.

I really believe he will develop into a truly great football player.

On another topic, I hope that during tomorrow’s AGM, the subject of referee development and oversight is raised, as it is vital IMO that the whole system in this country has to be completely reformed with refereeing performance appraised by panel whose independence and competence are beyond question. It is also imperative that below par refereeing performances lead to sanctions on the pepatrators.

I had a look at some of the things said on it, and if anything happens to to the man, I think the person who runs that particular website will not be buying any shares in SevcoFC as he could be taken to the cleaners for the comments he’s allowed stay up.

Of course that’s if the new laws on posting offensive material on the internet are taken seriously.

  15. Re my last post –

What I should have said was that if we come away from Lisbon with a score draw, and Spartak fail to beat Barca in Moscow we will qualify for the last 16.

  16. On Palestine, I’ve never been, a friend of mine, a surgeon goes over regularly and works for free training young surgeons, generally helping out.

He had a nine month pregnant woman in his care, she was in labour.

They had to get her to another hospital, they had to go through a checkpoint.

Three hours they were kept there, no pain relief, no medical facilities, and no reason for the delay, just an ill equipped ambulance. Luckily both baby and mother survived, but it was luck.

On another occasion he had to take another injured man through a checkpoint, again, long delay, not so lucky this time. Again no reason given for the delay.

This friend of mine is so laid back its yesterday, until you talk to him about Palestine, not the politics, the needless suffering of a people.

This is state terrorism in my view, and his.

Celtic are 200-1 to win the competition, I’ve stuck a tenner on it!

You could have 500-1 at the start- maybe some got more

  18. And is it not strange that the greatest flag wavers of them all, the huns & orcs of Bigotry Inc., who despise the tricolour of Eire with a passion as it represents much of what they purportedly hate (and I mean ‘hate’) , are happy to have the star of David wave around in their nail-bent agglomeration of approved symbols fluttering above their pointy wee heads; even stranger when you consider how Israel was founded, but then again, wasn’t that region once seen as the perfect mirror model of Ulster?

History is bent and shaped in all sorts of ways, but none so twisted as that envisaged by the true-blue worshippers at the altar of craven idiocy while they wrap themselves in the butcher’s apron in misguided and sad glorification of all that is wrong with the doctrine of ‘might is right’.

You’d think they’d have learned a thing or two by now. Obviously not.

Therefore, they are doomed to repeat themselves. So, in the spirit of cordial internationalism, I wish them: encore adieu.

    Stupid huns.

  21. ScotPatsFan-I read last week that no one has been convicted of any web hate crimes under Salmonds new law.

  22. Kojo : your financial prognostications are heartening.

Pray tell, what will the scores be v The Sheep, and v Benfica? You seem to have a Cassandra like knack of predicting these things of late, and a nice wee double would go a long way to paying for my next trip to see Celtic.

    Yours, in hand-rubbing expectation.

  23. TootingTim

TT interesting guy speaking on the subject is Miko Peled, there’s an hour long video of him speaking in Seattle, worth a listen (Information clearing house) and other sources…

  24. Salmond is a knucklesqueezing Jambo of the luj-luvvie persuasion. He only holds the orange constituency close to his cold and clammy chest.

Expect nothing from the wee dictator.

  25. Kojo, When does Hooper’s present contract run out ? , Obviously if he won’t sign a new one and the present one is running out we would be left with no option but to cash in on him, but I for one would be extremely sorry to see him go. Re Big Vic there is no way Lenny should let him go for 12 million, there is no hurry with him, he will increase in value over next 18 months, we will get our 20 million then and a lot of Football in the meantime.

  28. Recommendation for everybody who is discussing Israel/Palestinians topic.

I see many think that the Israelis came back to the land in 1948 or couple of years before that date. It’s worth to read about years before, not only couple but tens and hundreds.

Maybe you will find that the Israelis lived that all long time since thousands of years. Maybe there were more Jews than Arabs there in times when you think there was no one with Jewish roots?
