Treble chasing; business, not personal, the dirty battle

1454

Amid the general hilarity on Scottish football at the moment I’m sure it’s not escaped Ronny Deila’s attention that we have one of our most important games of the season coming up on Saturday.  The league is a marathon without any specific focus, the League Cup final is another huge game, but facing Dundee away is exactly the kind of game a club who are chasing a treble often lose.

It was Dundee who knocked the Aberdeen bandwagon off its tracks.  Given half a chance they will do the same to Celtic on Saturday.

Kenny McDowall must have felt a bit humiliated at being told he has to pick players on loan from Newcastle United, although clearly not humiliated enough to tell them to stuff the remainder of his contract.

Llambias’ instruction appears bizarre, but there’s always two sides to each story.  If McDowall informed his chief executive that he would not use the players, for reasons other than sporting merit, Llambias may well feel justified in making the instruction.

This public shaming of Llambias, the board, and by extension, Mike Ashley, is another act in a dirty battle.  Still, “It’s not personal, Sonny. It’s strictly business”, as Dave King almost said about Ashley yesterday.

Ashley’s men may be robbed of the ability to pick the team after an EGM next month, but he remains able to inflict a lot of ‘assistance towards the club’ before then.  If I can paraphrase Tom Hagan, ‘Mr Ashley never asks a second favour once he’s refused the first, understood?’  When personal offence has been taken, sometimes even good business isn’t enough to bring a ruthless patriarch to the table.

When news of the attack on the 10-year-old boy broke on Monday I assumed it would be a matter of hours before the offender was charged.  Three days on without news is concerning.  It appears that those who associate with people who believe random violence is acceptable and care little about the application on justice – which has nothing to do with any specific policing issue.

Hard cash is now available to anyone with information leading to an arrest. If you can’t report the offender for the sake of the victim, do it for the money.  You don’t need to be a witness to report the issue and collect the reward, you just need to know enough to get the ball rolling.

Well done to all who have gotten involved in the appeal to help the victim, especially organiser Rod Lee.  Stunning work, Rod.

thomthethim – indeed, I was thinking much the same thing myself yesterday. The only area dominated by overseas players is the defence: apart from that, most first picks are Scottish-qualified.

I remember when NL started as manager, he was quoted as saying something to the effect that he wanted a British “spine” to the team. Whether that is a good thing or not is, of course, debatable (personally, I see it as a good thing), but it’s rather ironic that it has finally happened under an overseas manager…

    Can’t be having that either.

I’d like to know who has better child protection procedures than the catholic church in Scotland. There may be others that are as good, but better? Nope. I doubt it.They are all flawed.

Child abuse by catholic clergy, is an utter scandal and particularly damaging to the victims as it’s hard to imagine, outside of the family, a greater betrayal of trust.

I know it’s not what some people want to hear just now but catholic clergy are among the least likely to be accused of abuse or be abusers in comparison to the UK population of men at large, at two fifths of one percent – and world wide certainly no more likely than other men.

  11. Did anyone hear the articulate hun on Ssb last night .. He was saying in his opinion the mad squad are now at a point where the disturbance at last Hearts game will seem like a ‘teddybear’s picnic’… Angry fans now openly talking of getting to the Directors box to drag Easdales out of the building, etc.

It was a great display of WATP mentality gone mad… As I say this guy was no numpty. Gerry MCCulloch was letting him run his mouth off but later reminded the caller about dangers of inciting attacks etc ( producer probably covering his/ her @r5e)….

I love those calls when they show their true colours while trying to present themselves as balanced, normal people….

Where do you start with that nauseating article?

Just on statistics, those include abuse by close and extended family members, which make up the vast majority. Remove them from the numbers and only look at cases with trusted professionals.

Anyway, perhaps I shouldn’t have got drawn into this. Football from now on.

About 8 years ago whilst at a meeting on care issues I was approached by the Director of The Mungo Foundation in Glasgow and her Finance Director to help them create an affordable IT Strategy for the many services they provided in the Glasgow area.

My then job was part time and after meeting the Finance guy I agreed to visit those services in my days off, do a hardware check and provide the cost of memory upgrade or new PC when former was not viable. My fee was the petrol money.

The wee aside to my main point is I had previously checked the MF Web site and seen about 12 services. It never occurred to me to drill down to later find out there were about 50 or more service points to visit providing care across the care spectrum. But a deal is a deal.

Anyway my main point is visiting those services was an uplifting experience to see the care and compassion of the carers, so it is entirely correct to recognise the good work the Church is responsible for.

If I were to discover today that abuse might have taken place in any place I visited, whilst that would sadden me, it would not change my view that putting Christ’s message into action is what Catholicism and other Christian religions is about and I saw it in action.

There is a story of a statue of Christ, arms outstretched in German church that had been bombed. The hands had been blown off but someone had tied a placard around the neck of Christ that said.

” He has no hands but yours”

That also means the hands are inseparable from the motives that bring them to act.

We are all God has to work with and over the piece more good than evil results based on what I witnessed during my visits.

Looking forward to the game against Dundee. Should be a bit more of a challenge than the last game we played. Be interesting to see whether selection/formation changes given we have a couple of new players.

I loved it when we had Stevie Murray and Ronnie Glavin. Great players, brought in to replace legends.

One of my former drivers, who now works in sales for our Oxford affiliate,is a Barnsley lad. Not that you’d know it from his pish Southern ways,of course. Oops, meant posh, but both are correct!

Anyway, his Dad is as mad a Barnsley fan as Muchael Parkinson ever was.

And rates Ronnie Glavin as the best he has seen. (Paddy he viewed as an enigma,so he knows his stuff!)
