Treble talk, farewell Big Mike

2035

Talk of trebles can disappear over the space of 90 minutes, and Ronny Deila will be forced to learn new patter if his team cannot regain the edge which was lost on Wednesday night at Celtic Park.  The challenge will be all the greater for the absence of cup-tied Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven, with others, including Kris Commons and Emilio Izaguirre.

Dundee United have fallen apart in the last few weeks, the departure of Armstrong and Mack-Steven has probably had something to do with this, which means they will be hurting.  Make no mistake, Celtic harmed their season by signing their best two players five weeks ago.  United will have an edge to them.

Just loving the celebrations that one of the world’s richest 400 people no longer controls a Scottish football club.  He still controls pretty much all profitable revenue streams, and holds security over assets, but he’ll no longer be asked to provide loan players, or loan cash.  They have swapped an ‘off the radar’ wealthy man for a glib and shameless liar.

Ashley repulsed many.  He was the archetypal fox let into the Ibrox hen house.  The juxtaposition of Celtic announcing a £29m shirt deal with New Balance, rights Ashley bartered for £1 at Ibrox, gives you an idea of how impaired newco are.  But allowing him to walk off with all those revenue streams, without the responsibility of running football operations, which will always lose money, is inexplicable.

I know people in the game who were concerned about having an opponent with the resources of Ashley.  That blocking SFA decision was crucial.  I don’t know anyone concerned about King, in fact, there is quiet delight at how things transpired.

Farewell Big Mike, thanks for all your work.

  1. Friday 6th

There was no priest in last night or tonight. They stopped me from seeing my solicitor tonight, as another part of the isolation process, which, as time goes by, they will ruthlessly implement. I expect they may move me sooner than expected to an empty wing. I will be sorry to leave the boys, but I know the road is a hard one and everything must be conquered.

I have felt the loss of energy twice today, and I am feeling slightly weak.

They (the Screws) are unembarrassed by the enormous amount of food they are putting into the cell and I know they have every bean and chip counted or weighed. The damned fools don’t realise that the doctor does tests for traces of any food eaten. Regardless, I have no intention of sampling their tempting morsels.

I am sleeping well at night so far, as I avoid sleeping during the day. I am even having pleasant dreams and so far no headaches. Is that a tribute to my psychological frame of mind or will I pay for that tomorrow or later! I wonder how long I will be able to keep these scribbles going?

My friend Jennifer got twenty years. I am greatly distressed. (Twenty-one-year-old Jennifer McCann, from Belfast’s Twinbrook estate, was sentenced to twenty years’ imprisonment for shooting at an RUC man).

I have no doubts or regrets about what I am doing for I know what I have faced for eight years, and in particular for the last four and-a-half years, others will face, young lads and girls still at school, or young Gerard or Kevin (Bobby’s son and nephew, respectively) and thousands of others.

They will not criminalise us, rob us of our true identity, steal our individualism, depoliticise us, churn us out as systemised, institutionalised, decent law-abiding robots. Never will they label our liberation struggle as criminal.

I am (even after all the torture) amazed at British logic. Never in eight centuries have they succeeded in breaking the spirit of one man who refused to be broken. They have not dispirited, conquered, nor demoralised my people, nor will they ever.

I may be a sinner, but I stand — and if it so be, will die — happy knowing that I do not have to answer for what these people have done to our ancient nation.

Thomas Clarke is in my thoughts, and MacSwiney, Stagg, Gaughan, Thomas Ashe, McCaughey. Dear God, we have so many that another one to those knaves means nothing, or so they say, for some day they’ll pay.

When I am thinking of Clarke, I thought of the time I spent in ‘B’ wing in Crumlin Road jail in September and October ’77. I realised just what was facing me then. I’ve no need to record it all, some of my comrades experienced it too, so they know I have been thinking that some people (maybe many people) blame me for this hunger-strike, but I have tried everything possible to avert it short of surrender.

I pity those who say that, because they do not know the British and I feel more the pity for them because they don’t even know their poor selves. But didn’t we have people like that who sought to accuse Tone, Emmet, Pearse, Connolly, Mellowes: that unfortunate attitude is perennial also…

I can hear the curlew passing overhead. Such a lonely cell, such a lonely struggle. But, my friend, this road is well trod and he, whoever he was, who first passed this way, deserves the salute of the nation. I am but a mere follower and I must say Oíche Mhaith.

It’s wishful thinking that the booing on Wednesday night was for the referee. The guy’s round about me were booing the team. The nob end guy who sits behind behind me threw in a “ya useless basturts” in amongst his boo’s.

Shame, I don’t like the team getting boo’d but that’s what happened on Wednesday.

And despite that, they still had to play improperly registered players to achieve their ‘success’.

  9. Quick question for those that know their history far better than me.

Has the club ever directly supported Irish Republicanism?

    SoT,

My recollections are that Jinky was ordered off three times, that I can recall.

Each time it was for retaliation for assaults from behind.

Each time it was against guys who were about the same height as himself. Beck. Aird of St. Johnstone and a wee guy from Thistle, whose name escapes me, Gibson, perhaps?

When you think of the abuse he took from full backs like Lunn, Greig, etc., it makes you wonder.

My own view is that it was the unexpected blow from the back that caused the red mist, as against the anticipated full frontal assault.

I see that the switcheroo, which was forecast on RTC at the very beginning, has taken place.

They did say that there would be a third ownership before the poison was excised and they emerge squeaky clean.

However, I think that the “journey” hasn’t been as smooth as they anticipated and it became somewhat onerous towards the end.

The last thing our game and especially Celtic needs is a totally unregulated TRFC. No Aim to report to, no FFP to constrain.

If we and the other clubs allow that to happen the turkeys will have voted, by abstaining, for Xmas.

I wonder where we are on Domestic FFP.

  18. weeminger

I think the discussions yesterday were about links to Irish Republicanism rather than how Celtic have supported it per se.

  19. Imagine this scenario.

A football team goes bust because of the actions of a few reckless men. Men who lied. Men who cheated. Men who played fast and loose with tax laws.

You start all over again with a new club. Who do you want to run it?

Anyone with more than a single brain cell would begin by saying that anyone involved in the old club should be excluded right away. No, you would want to start afresh with honest folk. People with a track record of success and a clean record, Men and women with impeccable characters.

Yet they ended up with Dave King.

I’m alternating between thinking this is a Brian Rix script and laughing, and concluding that they deserve absolutely everything they are going to get..

Has anyone asked Dave King how his legal action against Sir David Murray re his £20m investment in the old club is progressing?

    ———-

Be interesting to see how this one plays out in the media – their two blue-eyed boys up against one another.

Have to say on this occasion Murray seems far more credible – surely it was all in the accounts!

Interesting that King said last year that he had lost £20m and he would be “happy” to lose another £30m. Funny then that he is so fussed about the £20m……

We were in the enclosure opposite the main stand.

Strangely, the two sets of fans were not separated by cops or stewards if I remember right. I went to get some grub at half time and gave up cos guys were battling each other.
